>RepostSo ive been thinking about the nuts and bolts of Atlas recently. Id like to propose some actual world building for Nick and the Paladin program.At its base, the Paladins somewhat ironically are a part of the Atlas Military's Air Force, Air Department, whatever that looks like. Weve never seen a tank or APC in RWBY and that kind of makes sense when you think about it. A single aura enhanced soldier would eat a company of armor assets alive with the right powers. Cannons, chainguns (guns moved and operated by chains, not what youre thinking), HMG's, theyre slow to aim in an environment where dudes are already flipping cars and flying around. Tracked vehicles especially would be aura bait. Armor as a concept understood by modern militaries probably wouldnt have evolved for force on force, being strictly for grimm. But, again, it would be too slow in a world where speed kills.Well, Atlas being Atlas, forever wanting to bridge the gap between a single soldier without aura and hostile actors with it, went the way of the mech. We see it work, kinda. In the early volumes we see RWBY struggle somewhat to stop Roman in a Paladin. And, keep in mind, Roman is just some guy at the end of the day. Sure he's not an idiot, but i highly doubt he has 1000's of "flight hours" in suit. Probably the first time he ever used the thing, and it was enough to give what amounts to some of the best Beacon University has to offer.
Logically, that means a dedicated pilot with training and experience could push that machine to some insane limits. The Titanfall references kinda write themselves. Atlas, at least to some degree, has created a mechanical match for a huntsman. On top of that, driving the machine is another potential hunstman. You could theoretically break down the Paladin, and then out jumps the second phase of the boss fight ready to get down. So, with that said,The Organizational Structure:The Paladin program derrives its history from Bullhead pilots. The Atlas military needed people who had the capacity to operate stupidly complicated and nuanced machinery. There were limited, if any, candidates in the ground forces that had either the brain or inclination to qualify for the test programs, so they turned to their stock of pilots. Some retired guys came back, some new guys volunteered. All of them were qualified Bullhead pilots, because Atlas didnt have any better metric. The terms and training followed suit.All pilots are qualified on Bullheads. Despite the lack of overlap, this is a traditional first step and builds the understanding of coordinating air power with ground units.Most pilots attain the equivalent rank of a US Warrant Officer, given their very specific set of talents. But again, the expectation is that you get to be the second phase of the boss fight. All Atlas Special Operations Forces must have aura regardless of rank or position. This will include Paladin pilots serving in SOF units. A "Flight" is composed of 4 Paladins and a "Flight Commander" piloting a Command Paladin, the first line commissioned leader. This is where Nick starts, a team leader of 5 instead of 4 in this case. Hes younger than everyone in his team. Many of his teammates have been doing this for years. But, as it is in the real world, his primary duty isnt to get down, its to make decisions. The Flight Commander often takes a support role, the Command Paladin is outfitted with radar and longer range weapons. It is additionally the Flight Commander's duty to coordinate air strikes within a limited distance. Two "Flights" constitute a "Squadron". The Squadron Commander has his or her own protection detail consisting of 2 additional Paladins, typically of more senior Warrants. They collectively command the Flights, coordinate air assets at a longer distance, and also insertertion of Hunstman teams into the fight. Any of this team of thee may break off to reinforce a Flight in the event a Paladin goes down or needs require. The Squadron Commander's Paladin however will seldom do this as they carry critical communication equipment. Not that they cant though. Theyll get down if thats what it takes. Yeah after that, its just paper pushers and people who have been promoted to flying a desk. Command stuff. I could go into it but its not interesting.
