FAQ
Q: I'm a total beginner. Where should I start?
A: Do the exercises in either "Keys to Drawing" by Bert Dodson or "Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain" by Betty Edwards. Additionally, you can try the first few lessons of https://drawabox.com/ for building up muscle memory

I think a big problem with these tutorials is that beginners often think they're a step-by-step for how you should construct every single drawing, rather than as a template for studying shape, form, and structure. I think that's why we see so many people drawing "construction" that's simply attempting to copy these tutorials, rather than use them as a proper method to map out the drawing itself.
>>
>>85314561
You hit the nail on the head. It took me a very long time to realize that.
>>
>>85314611
Same. It's taken me ages, but just last night I made a drawing based almost entirely on my own knowledge of anatomy and how everything sits in relation to everything else. It's HARD, but it would have helped to understand that kind of method from the beginning.

I still can't do Loomis though, although I am finally starting to understand heads a little more. I guess I gotta do more dedicated skull studies.
>>
>>85314561
>simply attempting to copy these tutorials, rather than use them as a proper method to map out the drawing itself
What's a good way to put this to a beginner? Something like "use the perspective rules and anatomical reference points here as a guide to check your own work"?
>>
>>85314694
also also gesture first, construction second. I notice some tutorials also forget the inherit gesture behind certain poses
>>
>>85314930
"Learn your fundamentals" lmao. I resisted this for a long time, but it's simply not feasible; you HAVE to know the basics to be able to get better. You don't need to know or study them all at once (for example, you don't REALLY need light, color, or composition if you're just interested in figures for the moment), but you do need a few to even think about forming that solid foundation. I think the most important ones are gestures, shapes (including how to cut shapes into smaller pieces; establishing summetry is super helpful), perspective (at least insofar as learning how to think three-dimensionally) and if you're doing people, anatomy. Practicing your linework, too, of course, though that can be supplanted with enough patience, usually.

Marc Brunet just uploaded a video talking about how you really only needed to know a small amount of said fundamentals in order to lay the foundation.

Once you know those fundamentals, then you can start applying them to constructing drawings, since you have the toolbox stocked with some things. You can use spheres or boxes to get the perspective of a picture down, and then fill in the gaps, or figure out foreshortening by placing objects in front of others, or make new shapes by combining or cutting pieces out of others. You can ensure your anatomy is solid by drawing simple 'clothes' on a character, for example, and if it all lines up, you did it. If not, you hopefully know how to adjust it.

I wasted a lot of time not doing any of this, and now I fear I might be too lazy to properly put in the time since I'm just "good enough". I feel like that's a shame if it happens to other people. You should be getting better and better all the time.

>>85315002
Agreed. But I see those misunderstood a lot too. Hampton, I think, has some really good videos on the subjects where he details his methods line by line. Very insightful.

Just the nature of anonymous posting, I'm afraid. We're only really identifiable by our work, so when the post doesn't come with an image attached, all you've got to go on is the text. Everybody's got writer invariants that might tip you off, but those can be rather unreliable and there's often overlap; there's a lot of people out there who don't bother to capitalize their letters when they should, for example.

Going to present my own analysis in regads to what I need to focus on if I want to match NoahDoesArt's skill level (pic related) in a relatively "short" amount of time (1 year and half, 3/4 hours of drawing daily as the average)

>Form and sense of 3d space
Basically the most crucial aspect of what separates me from his work in terms of experience. His art feels very organic and bouncy. Drawabox and Perspective made easy alongside drawing from life/reference in general might fix this
>General anatomy knowledge and figure drawing
The most important aspect lacking in my art besides form. Noah also has a strong knowledge of all the overall muscles and shit and knows how to pose bodies better and more naturally. Morpho first paired with Bridgeman or Hogarth later and a shitton of timed figure drawing might fix this
>Inking
Not as drastic of a difference as point 1 and 2, but the gap is still noticeable. Studying the work of professional mangakas and comic artists who draw in ink heavy detailed styles might fix this alongside the rendering in pen and ink book
>Composition and Storytelling
I think this just comes from more developed intuition and visual library and clear ideas rather than any book or course desu. References help drastically

An example of my current skill level for direct comparison. I've been drawing casually for 3/4 years as a whole (counting the year and all the months I didn't touch a pencil). I love his work btw, and I use it as an example of which skill level I should be like before starting a proper comic book instead of focusing on funny strips like I'm doing now.

>>
>>
>>85351705
how do you render with pencils?
probably a skill issue on my end, i find it almost impossible to control my pen pressure consistently, so my only option to lighten things up is to erase, which then requires more lines to fix, and then in the end everything looks like shit and i go back to cel shading
>>
>>85364071
I'm using the sk3 brushpack for krita since It's supposed to blend better somehow. Generally I'm trying to get tone down in one long "stroke", I don't lift the stylus, just go back and forth as light as I can since I've noticed in the past that separate strokes darken more. I haven't got it down to a science and there's a lot of patience, but one thing I try to keep in mind is that the darks can always be darker. Dunno if that helps any, I'm bad at giving advice and kinda just go through a drawing until it looks right if that makes sense.

That's a solid analysis. You're missing the stylization part though. I doubt the artist you posted as your inspiration got to that level just by grinding fundamentals. I'd include copying artist with that particular style in your to do list.
Also an inherent understanding of 3d space and forms isn't something you study for but rather something that comes from millage. Waste of time to study directly if you ask me. Specially if you plan to fix that using drawabox, you'll just get better at drawing cubes instead of what you actually want to get better at (complex forms i assume)

Thanks. Yeah, my anatomy is pretty poor currently. This is mostly continuing to stab at gesture, just trying something new than my usual. I tend to overwork them.

If I can scrounge up time this month I need to get back into Hampton's figure drawing book.

Hello! Welcome back! Good work on the art rendering. How long have you been drawing?

Will do. I’m a big proponent of propping up other artists and helping newer artists keep the spirit to keep going. I can’t say I am a pro but I like to help when I can, but even I feel very little confidence in my own stuff. Still, I have a lot of technical knowledge so hopefully I can help.

Don’t let yourself live with regret. I wish I had drawn a hundred thousand more times in the past, since now every piece is created with pain. Obviously don’t hurt yourself, remember to stretch and rest and take care of yourselves, but don’t waste your liveliness. Of course you’re not wasting the time if you’re learning and loving and putting in effort, still.

question for the thread, if im making a self-insert OC, how much am i allowed to larp. Making him gigachad would be pretty corny imo
>>
>>85411814
It's generally accepted that an alter ego is going to be idealized to some degree, but overdoing it is a faux pas. Just keep it grounded and acknowledge your personal flaws rather than trying to cover them up with unearned bravado and unjustified ability in your avatar character and you should be fine.
>>
>>85412270
what's overdoing though?
>>
>>85412301
Heh, if that could be accurately defined, nobody would make the mistake unless they specifically wanted to for storytelling purposes. If it makes you cringe, you're almost certainly overdoing it. If it makes others in your close circle cringe, you're probably overdoing it. If it makes random strangers cringe, it's a 50/50 whether you're overdoing it. Keep things open and adaptable until you're sure of what you're doing and you'll keep the retconning to a minimum.

Grab a random image you like from Pinterest or something. Paint it with a time limit. It’s brain off as far as studying can be, and it can give you confidence and may lead to a spark of inspiration. If nothing else you spent 30 minutes and improved and won’t have the “I should draw” guilt.

It looks really good! But with that said, I don't think you should fear taking a long time with a piece. One of my favorite pieces I spent 90 hours on, and I still like it a lot. There is an argument for stopping before you go too far, but there are also times when the finished product simply takes a longer time.

I still think you should be proud of this piece though. Very nice.
>>
>>85430822
It’s less a fear, and more that I get tired of it before I can really spend the time it needs. This one was also more complex than I initially intended so I got a bit bogged down and once I hit that point of not wanting to do it anymore it’s a matter of finish it or abandon it. But thank you, I’m still very happy with it!

Couldn't find many asshole tutorials honestly, but here's one. People have different tastes in assholes, but a somewhat common method I see is this triangle one in the top left.
The ass cleft runs down and splits sort of like a Y-Junction at the perineum, kinda going to either side of bulbospongiosus muscles.
Now, the asshole itself isn't a triangle, so you shouldn't always draw it like one, it's more of a shape that can result from the ass cheeks pressing in on it.
But it can be helpful to visualize that you can place the asshole in the indent where the top of the pussy or the male perineum merge into the ass crack, which happens to be sort of triangular.
