To all the non-WoF scalies here, you really need to try reading WoF. Nothing even comes close in terms of great dragon-focused media. Dragons are the central characters, not just accessories to some humans. They're the drivers of the story, with scavs being the accessory. It has probably the best human/dragon integration I've seen out of any story in a while. Animus magic is developed in a way that feels like real fantasy magic rather than someone's bad attempt at copying 40k.WoF is not just one of the best scalie books out there, but one of the best book series ever. I genuinely would not be into scalies if it wasn't for WoF, so don't settle for trash like D&D or Monster Hunter where humans are the focus. Read WoF.

As for the kinds of dragons, I like both sides. A more "humanized" dragon can be great for building relationships that are recognizeable and relatable. There is media with dragon side stories that I quite enjoyed - how Esoteric Ebb used dragons in history to develop its world very well, and the green dragon that is present in that game is rather cool, but even that is rare. Outside of already widely known (here) stuff like AWSW, I really enjoyed 2 amateur works - A Silent Flame and Knight's Ward. Both fit my idea of dragons rather well, and even with Knight's Ward including "lizardforming" and saying that it was the relaxed form while the normal dragon is the warform... well it get its points back by having a interesting history of dragonkind.And neither a book nor even a comic, but I love the series of art made by ncimpuu about these 2 goobers - Aufei and the Scholar. I tried reading Vainqueur and just felt like Slackwyrm but even less funny and short in scope / grandness for something about dragons. You can't seriously compare that with the level of cultural impact something like WoF or Temeraire have. It's always the same with the purist shit, just one trick done to tiredness without actual conceptual grandness. When people get into WoF they aren't getting into a book about dragon into it's most cliche form, they are getting into an expensive universe where a diverse cast of dragon characters get to play the main role.
