He is also, as he mentioned, terrified he'd end up like his dad and is kind of overcompensating. This is a matter for both what he wants to be as a person and as a man specifically. I'd also say the main thing with why Beck doesn't want to talk about his dad is that he wants to process all the emotions about it by himself- he feels when others are trying to ask him about it it's because they don't trust him to deal with it, and don't respect his choice to deal with it in his own way. He's not getting any of that out of Rebecca, as she's not asking about his dad, she's asking about him. And also he feels that her problems should come before his problems as well, again the model his mother uses taught him that your kid is your most important responsibility.

So how much do people here think about character design? Like the visual aspect. Something I've been thinking about for the World's Strongest C-Class is a character relationship that I decided to add an extra layer to. I was thinking of a small girl with a chip on her shoulder who ends up contracting with a demonic looking summon that's super powerful, with them thinking that a little girl can be basically handled by them so they remain in charge. Only for it to be revealed despite being very girly and childish she's actually very smart and competent and reverses things on them. I was thinking on my drive from work of working in a devils bargain aspect to this- except with the tables are turned, where the devil thinks they are the one in control of the devils bargain, when in fact they're actually the dupe (in fact BECAUSE they assume they are the one in control they fail to see how much control they are surrendering). I got a good mental image of the girl (phrasing) but for the summon I haven't got a design in mind. I want something that looks like the exact opposite, very strong, but not like fully bestial and dumb.

I tend to give brief general descriptions and then hammer on a handful significant details that are either important to the narrative or carry some kind of appeal. Since I work in a fully written medium, I can rely on the reader's imagination doing the heavy lifting. It's a common adage, but to me, the real problem works backwards: Even if I had an exact picture in my mind, I would never be able to convey it accurately enough to conjure the correct image in the reader's mind, so it's not worth even trying. I'd say I get much better results using tricks and shortcuts.
