FAQ
Q: I'm a total beginner. Where should I start?
A: Do the exercises in either "Keys to Drawing" by Bert Dodson or "Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain" by Betty Edwards. Additionally, you can try the first few lessons of https://drawabox.com/ for building up muscle memory.

Not a complete failure, but I do agree that you're focusing too much on contour. The primary purpose of a gesture drawing is to capture the gesture, the movement of a pose; everything else, including proportions and anatomical accuracy, are secondary concerns that can be corrected in the construction phase. Therefore, it is safer to err on the side of exaggeration than accuracy here, which is part of the reason most gesture practice exercises have a time limit per pose; this forces you to focus on capturing just the bare essentials at breakneck pace.

One thing you're lacking is a central Line of Action in your figures, which is very useful for establishing a frame to build everything else around. It usually roughly corresponds to the spine and either the leg supporting the most weight for standing poses or the limb doing the most action for kicking, punching or running poses.

Long story short:
It seems like Adobe products are being recreated via AI, and the website in the image has the Photoshop one.
People claim that it works decently considering it’s an early alpha build, but I would like to know your opinions.
If it works as the real Adobe Photoshop, could it be a solid competitor against other free drawing software?
>>
>>85822839
>vibe code
Not even once.
Though Adobe definitely deserves the worst.
>>
>>85822839
it doesnt work like the real adobe photoshop. It's literally all vibe coded. They're clunky. they're not gonna receive any future support/updates, so if your shit crashes or becomes incompatible for no reason, good luck. Just take the time to save up for a decent drawing software while using krita or something. Or idk maybe find a way to pirate it. I'm not accusing you of doing this, but if you are, stop blaming your software/tools or constantly try to replace/"upgrade" them in hopes that your output will somehow skyrocket in quality and quantity. Very deceptive trap.
>>
>>85822839
First of all, that's indeed some delicious poetic irony for Adobe. The fuckers are responsible for a lot more enshittification than just the AI bullshit, so they deserve every ounce of pain coming their way and more. Could lead to some interesting legal precedents being set if they go to court over this too, and I'd imagine a big corporation's flagship products being threatened like this is almost certainly going to result in lawsuits.

Second, I never liked Photoshop as a drawing software. It's always been intended for photo manipulation (hence the name), it just happened to be versatile enough to double as a drawing program back in the days when your selection of those was pretty limited, circa late 90s - early 00s. Stacked up against more dedicated modern drawing software however, it falls short in all but post-processing tools, which is why a lot of artists will do the bulk of the work in other software before putting on the finishing touches in Photoshop, and that's only if they've got the luxury of a large enough income (or a corporate license supplied by their employer) to afford Adobe's extortionate rates.

I'd imagine the AI clone software's not going to stop there, though. It'll be interesting to see what happens once some plucky vibe coder thinks to himself to start combining the best features of all the various art softwares into one holistic open-source package. Especially with the CCCs and governments of the world putting a lot of pressure on the big companies to restrict the allowed kinds of use for their tech on the open market, one shouldn't sneeze at the prospect of a rapidly-developing alternative that's not beholden to any of that bullshit, though I'd imagine the legislators will be scrambling to plug up this loophole on the double before it wrecks all their plans of securing hegemony over the production of propagand... oh, I meant to say culture, of course.

>stop blaming your software/tools or constantly try to replace/"upgrade" them in hopes that your output will somehow skyrocket in quality and quantity. Very deceptive trap.
Ok but what if my software actually sucks
>>
>>85824524
there's a 1% chance you're software is limiting you, and there is a 99% chance that your own skill is doing the limiting
>>
>>85824524
A competent artist can make good stuff with Windows 98's Paint. It'll take a lot longer and suck more than what he could do with better software, and its unlikely he'd ever end up in the situation of having no other alternatives unless he's doing a challenge for shits and giggles, but there's a reason the old adage goes that only a poor craftsman blames his tools. You need to be competent in the basics before you can get the most out of all the fancy gadgets you're given, and getting them too early can easily lead to you using them as crutches, slowing your progress on learning the basics and likely leading you to picking up a lot of bad habits you'll need to painfully unlearn later.

There is a non-zero chance that it's hardware-limiting. For example, some tablets suck. They warp your perception and make drawing more difficult than it should be. Software settings, etc. For a traditional example, a draftsman will have incredible difficulty with oil paints. Different mediums.

You're not wrong in that it IS likely a skill issue, but let's not pretend for a moment that your tools can also make things more difficult. Hell, when I moved from one tablet to another (both touchscreen tablets), the difference in program functionality made me question everything I thought I knew until I learned to reconfigure my brain.

Which is the real crux of the issue: are you recognizing shortcomings, or using them as excuses?

>have a ton of ideas i really like with my own ocs
You're not alone in that feeling and I wish I had an answer for you on how to combat it. Fulfilling requests and yoshi drawing has made up for my lack of OC creativity at least. For me, mixing fun personalities/lewd material with media that I love is what keeps me invested and its easier to draw from preexisting world building to assist with that. Coming up with your own stuff can be taxing at times.

how is biology this cruel?

Please tell me this is really an important skill and not some elaborate joke by artists worldwide upon their students
>>
>>85838485
Drawing from the shoulder requires a larger paper (A3 and up), preferably on a standing easel, to get the most out of it; smaller paper simply doesn't have enough room to work with to benefit much from it. You could maybe try to draw from the elbow instead if you can't get the space and easel, but I have no experience with that (besides incidental use while mostly drawing from the shoulder) so I don't know if it'd be all that helpful to learn as a technique.

I recommend reading Scott Robertson's "How to render" at the sections where he goes over how cast and form shadows work for simple geometric objects.
It does build up on the knowledge of perspective, his other book "How to draw" goes over the basic rules.

i became aware that vidya is not a satisfying hobby, but i started with modeling in blender. i too easily got caught up with the technicalities. no one cared for my stuff there, including myself, which caused me to give up and fully commit to drawing after a few years. me dropping blender was fuel for the first few years of drawing, as i didnt want to be a drop-and-pickup hobbyist. finally, after about 5 years, it became properly fun and i just like doing it, even if i barely share anything and rarely get interaction. my fundamentals are shit, and i probably have talent in other medium, but i want to be able to visually showcase my ideas

There's a website that catalogues names from a variety of cultures and time periods that I've used as a reference guide when deciding on character names, might be useful to you:

>>
>>85835164
I always did think the yoshis in Paper Mario were very fuckable. Well done.
>>
>>85836210
honestly, i think you'd gain a lot from incorporating gesture rather than explicitly using boxes. your figures are accurate enough, but they lack a lot of the energy seen in the references. at least rough out a line of action and a rough energetic (and potentially less accurate) pose before moving to boxes to correct anatomy/perspective and such. that'd do wonders to get a pose that sells the movement rather than a static posing mannequin.
>>
>>85843497
This is true. I actually do gestures beforehand, I just dont post em because I dont want to be spamming the thread with my retarded bullshit more than I already do. The box figures are specifically because I was having a very very rough time trying to get like the ribcage/hips and sometimes shoulders aligned in ways that I was satisfied with before. I'll try being a bit more loose with the "Blind drawing" box figures now that I've kind of gotten a better handle on things now.

I do not believe what I create is appealing, and it's not like the stuff I read or watch. Head is too large, its no wider than the torso in the references. I think the tail end is too small, hard to tell because of the previous reason. Besides not having as clear a goal as you do when fulfilling someone else's request (or working off of established lore for a fanwork), there's always a bit of extra terror of the blank page involved when you're doing something more personal, even if it's just some random bullshit you're going to post anonymously; you'll still be baring an aspect of your very soul for others to see in all the artistic glory you can manage. If revealing something so intimate to the masses doesn't give you pause, the creeping self-doubt of your ability to do it justice at your current level of skill will.

Unfortunately, there's no one-size-fits-all solution to this conundrum; every creative on the planet would kill for one, so if one was available, it would be quite well-documented. A common complication with problems whose primary component is psychological. Besides the usual bevy of folk remedies you always hear about (willing yourself to work by reminding yourself that failure is a natural part of the learning process and that you can always iterate on the concept again later with the benefit of greater experience, doodle randomly for a bit first to get yourself over the hurdle of actually putting pen to paper, or simply take a bit of a sabbatical if overwork and burnout seems to be the more pertinent issue) there might be two additional diametrically opposed approaches worth trying; either do a lot of prep work for the piece you're dreading so you have an actionable plan to follow almost by rote, or come up with a new idea on the spot and do absolutely no prep work at all before putting pen to paper.

The latter detaches you from any greater expectations that might be holding you back, as the new idea will not be one you'll to be invested in until you've already started doing something with it. The former will make tackling an established idea feel considerably more doable, as you're going in with a plan of action and plenty of references.

i try to keep the posting here to a minimum, need many more years under my belt before most of the stuff is worth sharing. thank you very much, and yes i love drawing this silly slipper lady when the owner requests her.

Alternatively, you can always do a study of something like pic related.

to be honest after mirroring my art a lot more now I've noticed I've gotten better with things being placed where they should. I still occasionally run into the "skew" issue with the body but that is always pretty easy to fix with skew tools

color pros, i need some advice. im working on an image with characters in black clothing and im hitting a wall. im kinda just confused what to do

why is it generally considered bad to use straight black? when i see industry artwork they seem to use straight black/grey and it looks fine like pic related. i see that you’re supposed to use complementary colors but i dont know what complementary colors work work with black? using dark purple or blue just makes the outfits look dark purple of blue.

>>

not sure why you'd listen to a random tumblr post. Better decision is to look into and read some of the colour and light books/guides that are in the OP. Ive never heard that using deep blacks is bad.

ive been considering something like this where the outfits themselves are pitch black, then you use lighting to define shape and details but im further confused about how artists pick where to shine. something like this doesn’t seem to have a defined light source? are artists just going willy nilly when they do this method?
>>
>>85890504
>they hate snoots.
Of course they do, it says "kemono" right there on the title. And anime styles, specially focused on cuteness, avoid drawing noses unless highly simplified.
>>
>>85890837
Kemono is just nip furry. It's not a style, it's not a preference. There are nips that draw anthros properly and there are ones that do animeslop.

Pretty much, though having some references pictures IRL latex/spandex clothing is useful, of course. Even better would be owning a few articles of such cloth so you can always empirically test what specific lighting conditions look like reflected off of them, but fetishwear tends to not exactly be cheap.

Dear anon, I call bullshit. You've made great strides in your art since I've seen you posting here and your recent batch has been your best yet imo. I mean fuck, I draw yoshi porn in earnest so it's not like there's a bar here for you to overcome. I encourage you to share when you feel like it.
