Kaa is an ally, mentor, and even friend to Mowgli. But on the hunt, Kaa is a nigh unstoppable terror, equally dangerous and cunning whether hunting by stealth and deception or by physical fighting and strength. In Kaa's main book/chapter, "Kaa's Hunting", he's described and depicted more like a living force of nature or ancient god than an animal, and even his allies (save Mowgli) fear him. Though, of course, he does have his flaws like being almost deaf or his massive size causing problems on the hunt.The only things Disney kept from the Kaa of the books is the name, the fact that he's a snake, and that he can hypnotize (of which Book Kaa did by a slithering dance and a humming song, to whole crowds, of which Mowgli was unaffected). What Disney did to him was character assassination of the highest degree. All because apparently, they thought it'd be bad to have snakes be shown as good to children. It's like if the Hobbit movies made Smaug into some mascot character for children that looked and acted like Barney the Dinosaur, because they thought Smaug would be too scary for them. Fucking nuts. And tragic, honestly. Not just because Book Kaa was a great character, but also because I can't help but imagine how much better snakes in fiction would be as a whole if Disney depicted Kaa as he should've been.
