A good one should be horribly traumatized or inhuman - Ayanami Rei, Kotomine Caren, Nagato Yuki. Too many shows go for it as a token personality type without a solid character behind it and to me that kills the appeal.You know, black hair on a protagonist didn't used to be a red flag. Before 2008 or so, it was just another design choice. Then came the first tidal wave of isekai slop. It ruined black-haired teenagers forever. Oversaturated the market. Now if I see a series with a black-haired schoolboy as the protagonist, I just have to assume it's garbage from the start. Relying on the self-insert appeal.
