FAQ
Q: I'm a total beginner. Where should I start?
A: Do the exercises in either "Keys to Drawing" by Bert Dodson or "Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain" by Betty Edwards. Additionally, you can try the first few lessons of https://drawabox.com/ for building up muscle memory.

>Realize that multiple refs have clothes

Genuine question, is it worthy to at least try to sometime do gesture/trying to understand how clothes work even if it isn't the principal subject of study or its just a bad idea?

Drapery is a subject matter in and of itself for a reason. Even if you wanna draw most of your characters nude, having some fabric in the scene or even some very revealing clothes on your characters can do wonders for making things more interesting both for the viewer and the artist, so yes, learning at least the bare-bones basics of depicting cloth is well worth the effort.

Looks like something you could do with just your standard hard round brush, maybe with some blurring and blending at strategic spots, but I'm no expert in rendering so I could be wrong.

As for the value of the flat colors, depends on if you want to render the piece and whether you want to work from shadow to light or vice versa. A darker base color for the flats suggests the former approach, where you add a couple of layers of lighter color and one darker to create a four-shade value range.

Well some refs in sketchdaily have clothes or draperies. So like I just skip them or at least give a try? I generally do 10 poses with 1 minutes and try to do a 5 minutes pose
>>
>>86217291
I'll always say to give it a try, but if you find them distracting alot of time out of you or if you're a super beginner, there are other more important things to work on that would help you improve quicker, but then again, if you're a super beginner, just drawing almost anything will help you improve

what an odd sheet. firstly there’s plenty of poses where neck is nowhere near over support region. what you actually are concerned about is the sum of all forces, which means heavy asses and gold bars will have more sway than ears or noses. wind could be a factor too, that’s a force. also odd that it mentions “held pose” but then includes dancing

I followed AI early on and saw how fast the "wild west" era died and went entirely private.
It's only a matter of time before the entirety of it is subscription based.
I'll say LLMs have plateaued pretty hard with and never quite made it to perfect mimicry and I'd assume image gen has hit the same wall.
Even in the event AI becomes completely indiscernible from real art companies will decide what you're allowed to generate and miserable people will pressure them into ridiculous values.

>I enjoy trying to understand how to
>Incapable of learning
I have really hard suspicions just off this alone. I doubt you're mentally incapable of learning. You're smart enough to boot up a device, go to a specific site and contextually understand the comment i made, meaning you're not literally braindead or retarded, so what gives?
>>
>>86284731
Nta, but learning disabilities do exist. Many people might not even know they have them. One of my best friends is a very capable person, but he has trouble absorbing information in certain ways (beyond what is normal for a person), and it's presented him with a lot of challenges throughout life.

Drawing and painting are really hard tasks. They demand a lot of time, patience, and raw skill. Not everyone takes to it like a fish in water. Like I can make pretty decent pics, but it's a struggle almost each and every time, no matter how many hours I put into the craft, and that's a source of constant frustration to me, because it feels like it SHOULD be easier.

I never realized how separated the "Motor Skills" portion of art was from the "Knowledge Acquisition" portion. In fact I never really thought about it at all and assumed that they were ultimately the same thing.

To explain what I mean by that, I'll refer to cooking. I rarely see a person who really good knife skills make bad food, but I have seen someone with terrible knife skills make good food. Maybe that's where a small concept of "sovl" comes from?

I genuinely struggle to understand some concepts (forshortening for example) and quickly unlearn whatever I do if I believe my attempt at gesture drawing, like It's been two week now that I do nearly only that with boxes in different perspectives.

unless im waaaaaaaaay off the mark, i think you may be misinterpreting someone with line making skills. Line/mark making is a fundamental of art. It might be the quintessential fundamental of art cause how can you draw anything without making lines/marks/etc. But you're on the right path. Someone can make good art while having lackluster fundamentals or "skillz". But it depends what you mean by "good". Good as in skill/technical ability? or good as in "The story/characters/atmosphere/setting are good". The latter is something you can't really directly teach. Those are sovl, young grasshopper. And you have one, as we all do.

>Line/mark making is a fundamental of art.
Maybe, but it's also the most intuitive to grasp and easiest to master. Knowing WHERE to put the lines for maximum effective impact is another matter entirely and the rest of the fundamentals of art largely deal in helping the artist solve that infinitely complex conundrum. This is why the old adage goes that art is much more about seeing than drawing.

As for SOVL, it's one of those concepts that's nearly impossible to define, but you know it when you see it. Generally, it can be boiled down to a feeling that whoever made whatever you're looking at poured a bit of their inner self into it that's evident in all the little details that don't mean much individually, but when taken as a whole, begin to reveal just how much thought and care went into the process. Of course, to be able to spot the differences between a similar soulless creation, they either need to be so stark as to be visible to the layman (which they often are in made-by-committee products, since there's often no singular creative vision behind such items and the potential rough edges have all been sanded down entirely) or the viewer needs to be well-versed enough in the craft used to create it that they can spot a hasty, slapdash job that's technically well-executed enough to pass muster but is clearly done less in the name of passion and more in the name of a paycheck. Or the old reliable for the less well-versed of comparing works by the same author and seeing how they gradually lost the spark of their earlier stuff but can't stop half-assedly making new things because it's simply too lucrative to continue.

Also to answer you seriously: use a circle. Right angles are 90 degrees, which can be easier to visualise in perspective with a circle.

biggest truth nuke this thread has had in awhile. It really is a bit concerning that the draw thread is like 35% drawing and the rest is people venting about how much they either hate drawing, want to quit, or how they're not improving or cannot.
>>

>rest is people venting about how much they either hate drawing, want to quit, or how they're not improving or cannot
Growing up is realizing that this covers around 99% of artists.
>>
>>86295804
99% of artists don't draw?
>>
>>86295835
Is that what I quoted, dingbat?
>>
>>86295854
? you responded to my message about how most people here either dont draw or have problems with drawing, and you're saying 99% of artists have this problem? Does that not sound a little bit contradictory? Or did you want to claim that most people complain an vent about how much they hate the thing, but still draw despite that? Cause that's very much not what i was talking about lol
>>
>>86295886
Man, I swear to god some of you have undiagnosed reading comprehension problems.

I am saying that most artists, at least in my experience, face very real difficulties with art, and either feel disdain towards it, frustration with it, and/or want to quit or consider quitting on a regular basis. And feeling like you can't improve is also incredibly common among artists whom I've spoken to (and I've spoken to artists both big and small, from 100 followers to 100k).

That is to say, artists deal with a lot of similar issues, and not one of them (in a vacuum) means they don't like to or don't want to draw. It's a very demanding skill to learn. It's very hard. It takes a lot of time. People only have so much patience, and they'll need to vent.
>>
>>86295978
i understand that most artists have self-doubt. I don't know why you're critiquing my reading abilities when my vent was pretty obvious and was about how the thread is mostly a vent thread and thats it. There's very little advice every given, if anything it's typically always wishy washy or vague. The top poster is always consistently the dude posting guides or tutorials. It's literally just a whine thread about people who hate drawing.

>>
>>86296116
look, if you wanna vent that's fine, but atleast post your work or something so we can offer advice. guidance or something instead of just constantly posting into the thread (for months) hoping you get a (you) that will magically fix all your art problems. Like it's a bit asinine that i remember someone in this thread saying that calling someone a /beg/ is considered like mean or something or discouraging. Like bro, if that's enough to get you down, how the fuck do you expect to draw anything challenging?
>>
>>86296192
nta but i'm actually part of the problem here because i'm a /beg/fag and never post my work since i know the problem is simply not having practiced the fundamentals enough

i think people need to chill the fuck out and focus more on simply doing a little every day when they draw, i doubt i'm the best person to give advice for it but the less pressure you put on yourself the better you'll do, unless you're getting paid wtf is the point to hate the process of drawing or of doing any art in general
just do what you can and try to learn a little every day, anybody in this thread can do it
>>
>>86296814
yea pretty much this. If you want to vent FEEL SUPER FREE TO DO SO. i understand the mental qualms that come with being an artist. But please for god sake, post your attempts or work. Let's actually get the ball rolling and improve the things people complain and get frustrated by. Literally nobody cares if you're bad skillwise (unless they're weird idk)
>>
>>86296847
>>86296814
to add onto this, please stop putting art on this scary pedestal, like it's impossible to learn and impossible to improve at. There are dumbfucks right now who can draw. Why? cause they've kinda just fucked around and drew shit as kids/teens and they carried that habit into adulthood. As the anon above said, start small, focus on understanding one thing a session, whether it's something simple as "this is the shape of ribcage", and then carry it onto the next session.

Sorry in advance for the unsolicited redlining but you're on the right track with
wanting to omit the line on the left leg. I'd suggest taking the line from raichu's
back all the way down to her right leg to make it a more of a seamless transition
and to keep her round body shape intact. The defined cheeks on both haunches
makes them look slotted in like lego pieces, at least to me. Hopefully this helps and it's good to see you doing another crack pairing as I liked your previous one with Dewott and Eelektross. Whats the plan with the Beheeym and Elgyem?

Typical passive-aggressive AI nigger, making assumptions and not having reading comprehension skills. Most artists I know love their craft, so thank you for proving my point that only posers hate creating.

Genuine question: How was he wrong? He clearly fucked up with how he said it, but I think he meant that most artists are too busy enjoying their craft to complain about the process. It's usually bitter d/ic/ks and immature Twitter toddlers who cry about drawing or painting or whatever they do
>>
>>86320755
there's balance to it. I genuinely love drawing and can pull off multi-hour sessions no problem because it's like a dopamine loop for me to see myself learn and be able to improve. However, there are still times where i "hate" drawing. Where i doubt myself, my abilities, my smarts and my character. It's your ego, just a very negative ego, and managing your ego, whether it's inflated or deflated, is core to improving at literally anything. You have to believe in yourself a little or else you'll never truly try.
>>
>>
>>86320755
>It's usually bitter d/ic/ks and immature Twitter toddlers who cry about drawing
It's not.
Like I said, I've spoken to a lot of artists both big and small who struggle, and you can easily extrapolate that into orders of magnitude. I'm not saying all artists hate art unequivocally; that's stupid. But the struggle with art often leads to resentment, and it sometimes takes a lot of mental fortitude to keep going when you can't seem to make any leads. I was trying to evoke some empathy, but the nuance goes over some people's heads.

And frankly, from what I've noticed through various interactions, while I believe art is a skill first and foremost, creative skills lend themselves to particular people more than others. I lack the same impassioned creativity I've seen in a lot of other artists (likely those you refer to who absolutely love their craft with fervor), and while I enjoy the act of drawing, I'm not going to pretend that sometimes it doesn't make me want to jump off a bridge. That's just how it is.

TL;DR: if someone wants to yell and moan sometimes, it's fine. Ignore it if you don't like it. But I encourage a little bit of solidarity because chances are, one day, you'll want to yell too.

>>86320897
Well said.
>>
File: 1565372482813.jpg (317 KB, 1603x2048)
317 KB JPG
The conclusion I've come to is that you gotta love the craft a whole lot to put up with all the pain and bullshit it throws your way on a regular basis. There's a reason many artists will prefer to starve in order to work on their art rather than aim for a more sensible career and it isn't just the tendency towards mental instability, which might be more of an effect than a cause, now that I think on it.
