I honestly think it doesn't matter when it becomes canon, when it's non established it far more personal who's ship "makes more sense". When it's canon, it's up to "le preference" and people can just ignore it for the most part.

As someone who was there when the show was still running, most of the fandom was legit worried that Disney would force Dana to have Lunter as the endgame couple. They became aggressive to the point of saying that Lunter was homophobic because it was gay erasure to have Luz paired up with a guy (nevermind the fact that she's canonically bisexual).

Do you want to know how Luz and Hunter ended being seen as "sibling-coded", because it was a way to discourage Lunter shipping within the fandom by being pseudo-incest. Of course, some people went along with the incest angle while others just ignored them and shipped them as usual.
