Would it be safe to drive around then Yucatan alone with my wife? I've only ever been to Japan internationally which is pretty much Disneyland and doesn't count. Specifically the Merida region. All statistics say it's the safest city in North America but as an American millennial it has been deeply instilled in me that if I go outside of a resort area in Mexico I will end up raped and beheaded. I can't shake the crippling fear even though it looks like a kickass place to spend a week.
>>2815619Why don’t you go ask Reddit?Nobody here actually travels except for flying to have sex with impoverished thirdies.
I haven't driven that way but last july I rented a car and drove between cancun-tulum-chichenitza with my girlfriend. No issues except for stray dogs when I was going pretty fast. Tolls as well. Some roads are pretty shit with pot holes if going through side streets.
>>2815627That's what I was thinking. I was thinking a day trip to Uxmal, day trip to Chichen Itza, and then maybe the Celestun Biosphere and a day in Progreso or Izamal. So just touristy areas that should be really safe I was just worried about the driving between if the drivers were maniacs or anything else to worry about. Everything I read says don't worry about anything it's safer than your home city but don't drive after dark or off main roads or you're in trouble which seems kind of conflicting.
>>2815619even mexicans do not drive around on their backroads
>>2815643The Yucatan is the most civilized region of Mexico. You still might encounter potholes capable of damaging your car on some roads, which is why driving at night is not recommended.>>2815619I didn't visit the Yucatan because it was too flat and boring and safe and touristy for me. >with my wifeMexicans are much nicer to traveling couples than they are to solo male travelers.
>>2815619Don't be cheap and use the toll roads. Most likely you won't even need to use anything other than the main roads anyway.
>>2815619Yes its very safe. I've done it a few times with my wife and kids. Don't miss Valladolid and Uxmal. Wonderful.
