Did you ever travel to a particular attraction or place that made you think it wasn't worth going? I'm currently debating whether to see one of Tokyo's most famous shrines (Senso-ji) and part of me feels like I must see it since I'm there, but part of me also feels like I'll wish I had gone somewhere else. I'm curious to hear your thoughts and whether you've felt this yourself (after having visited the place that is). I'm not going until fall next year so I'm planning ahead.
>>2816931dude it's just a temple, just get on the train and go. why on earth are you planning like a year ahead?yeah some attractions are underwhelming when you get there but you'll never know unless you go and see it for yourself
>>2816945Because my last trip to Peru was filled with disappointment that could've been avoided. I went to so many popular tourist attractions that I wished I hadn't gone to. Trying to avoid that happening again. I mean I've seen photos of the temple from all angles... do I really need to go?
>>2816951senso-ji is right in the city near a train station, it's not like you have to trek for days to get there. if you don't like it just leave and go somewhere else
>>2816931ive felt this way about most of the places ive visited. as if the places themselves arent boring enough, theyre also crowded which tourists, which makes them worse.
>>2816931never go to the famous places. you'll just be disappointed. go to places nobody talks about
>>2816951First time I've heard someone say they were disappointed with Peru. >>2816968Can't be disappointed if you have no expectations in the first place, kek
>>2817259True. This is the best solution OP. Go and see all the tourist attractions, since it's highly likely that you'll spend your life wondering what they were actually like, but don't expect anything from them. Just go and tick them off and move on to the next place if you don't feel like hanging around long.
>>2816931Florida alligators man they are just lying there, they don't do anything, they aren't scary. Don't go.
>>2816931>>2816968That's how I felt when I went to the Colosseum. Even durring the off-season the line takes all day to get in with "refugees" constantly pestering you to buy their overpriced chinesium or trying to pickpocket you. Once you get inside, It's too crowded to be able to actually enjoy the space and every sightline is blocked by crowds of people. Ironically, the Roman Forum that is included as an extra with the ticket was way more enjoyable than the main attraction, since there was plenty of space to get immersed in it and get away from the crowds.
>>2817295I felt the same. I recall the scene in Gladiator, where Juba looks up at the Colosseum and says, "I didn't know men could build such things" and how amazed they were at the sheer scale of it. I realize they made it look bigger for the movie, but I at least expected to have a similar reaction when I saw it in real life. But no, I simply thought, "There it is. It's OK."
i have been good with every travel destination ive made
>>2816931Chichen Itza was a bit of a let down. It was so sunny and hot and none of the trees could provide shade. The glaring sun made it hard to see the ancient Mayan etches on the ruins and didn't really show well on a camera. After the pandemic, people couldn't walk to the top of the pyramid. The stairs look a bit sketchy anyway but it was sad that I didn't get to experience that. There were hagglers everywhere selling the same trinkets on every corner. There was a whistle or something that sounded like a jaguar roar and they kept blowing it everywhere. The hagglers were nice though but it kinda cheapened the experience. It was also a 2 hour bus ride each way from Cancun taking you through an endless jungle, and it was quite expensive, though I did book it through the resort so maybe that's why. The iguanas were cute though.
>>2816931if you like being stuck in a crowd for hours then go, its not that different from other big temples in japan BUT you should not skip Asakusa. Taking a picture from the outside gate is enough, use that time to walk the marketplace area and its surroundings
>>2816951If you're worried about crowds, visit Senso-ji around 7pm. Most stores near temple will be closed and it does look beautiful at night.
>>2824073What are other must-see places in Tokyo?
>>2824242Jinbocho district. It's mainly a lot of bookstores in Japanese but they also sell paintings, movie posters, and even the tickets which include the artwork of the movie on them. Also some of the best fucking curry in the country. Go to Curry Bondy and get the cheese one if you aren't lactose intolerant. It's worth the wait
>>2824246>paintings movie posters and currynot a must see anon, be real.
>>2824242It's an hour train ride but Kawagoe is a pretty neat city you could make a day trip out of. It basically is a destination dupe of Kyoto where you're enjoying what that city usually offers at a better price.
senso-ji is a nice templethe area around it has a cool local festival (pic related) in november that might be on when you're there
>>2816951I know how you feel. Don’t go to temples.
