It is really jarring going from a city full of life, where you were surrounded by people, with a different adventure or new sights to see everyday, back to home where you're surrounded by suburbs and people's idea of a cool hang out is the gas station and walmart. As a first time traveler, after living my entire life thinking that its fine to be a shut in stay at home guy, I'm coming back home and realizing how shitty it is. I've been home less than 24 hours and I'm already wishing I was somewhere else.Has this feeling ever went away for you or is it something that just continues forever even for experienced travelers?
>>2817509I thought living abroad would fix it but once my residence expired, it was way worse once I got back home. I'm moving to a different country in 4 days though, so let's see
>>2817509Funny thing, humans will always get back to the status quo. That is, the novelty of being in a new place can only last so long. So even if you moved somewhere new, that "new" place now becomes the "usual". This seems to be the case everywhere, with the sole exception of Japan. That's the most hilarious part. Most people who went to live in Japan still find themselves in wonder of the country.
>>2817509i always say the worst part about leaving wisconsin is having to come back to wisconsin
>>2817509Finding fault with your surroundings is something you can do anywhere in the world, anon. You err by being unable to critique your surroundings without obsessing over your own personal unhappiness as if it were some grievous wrong. Life is full of struggle and pain, that's a simple fact. If you ate some crappy street food and got a bellyache, you can obsess over how much it sucks, or you can compartmentalize your misery and focus your attention on better things. >surrounded by suburbsSounds like you live with your parents. In that case, a lot of your unhappiness is explained by your return to a nest you've outgrown. After my first monthlong solo trip at age 20, I returned to my parents' house, but immediately began looking for a place of my own and moved out three weeks later.
North America, particularly Canada is hell on earth.
>>2817509post-travel ennui will wear off generally within 2 weeks of returning. though of course you cannot hide from yourself that there are interesting places out there and the feeling that you could be somewhere else will persist. >>2817559Yes.
>>2817546>with the sole exception of Japan. That's the most hilarious part. Most people who went to live in Japan still find themselves in wonder of the country.Where did you get this idea from? I have lived here for 5 years and counting. The foreign residents I meet usually fall into 3 basic buckets>resentful weeaboos whose isekai dreams failed to become reality and then failed/refused to adaptwhile in the delusion stage, this is the only group I can think of people "still find themselves in wonder of the country."99% leave soon after they realize Japan isn't Sword Art Online (dubbed).>living normal daily lives in their foreigner bubble (adapted but can't speak the language)Next to the weeabs, always nagging about how dumb the local way is and how superior the foreigner way is.>living normal daily lives (adapted and can speak the language)Probably the most normal, because while the foreigner stigma or novelty depending on the situation still exists, at least your aren't living your life stuck on a wheelchair by not being able to communicate. This was the case for every homogenous country I've lived in for 3+ years, minus the weeaboo phenomena. At some point, everything just becomes normal. Japan isn't some magical place exempted from this.

>>2817509Anon my entire life is just romantically suffering through waging, treasuring simple pleasures like a cigarette at the park, while I rehearse my “triumphant return to Thailand.”Then I go to Thailand and despite drowning in hedonism, I’m plagued by a wistful ache in my soul that everything is fleeting and ephemeral. That the money will run down, I’ll have to pack up my pecker, and get back on the plane.Even when was riding on a moped with 4 girls and the girl driving was drunk, to a venue blackout drunk, and then a vicious sidegra railing when I got the girl home, when I was alone in my bed the next day, I’d listen to about u by lil peep. At the height of his fame he was suffering and dying. I find the exactly what I want in life and all I want to do is destroy myself through it. <3

>>2817548Funny, I’ve always felt Wisconsin is a great place to come back to. Nice affordable home, a lot of the towns are pretty walkable, lots to do in the outdoors, four very distinct seasons, decent proximity to Chicago/Twin Cities.I live in a small Wisconsin city with a pretty vibrant, walkable downtown very near a lake that I can canoe/cross country ski on to my hearts content. It cost me $195,000 & I paid for it cash. I have an apartment 3 hours drive away in Chicago, and I’m looking to buy a condo there soon. Spend between half and three quarters of the year abroad (for both work & leisure) and I love coming home. But yea OP after your first couple of trips it’s definitely a malaise (I wouldn’t call it ennui) and depression that sets in. You gotta put some money away to build a life worth living at home. Affordable housing markets are good for this. What really sucks are bitter people at home who resent you for “having it all”. You’ll get a lot of static no matter how cheery or positive you try to be. Don’t brag, don’t even talk about your travels unless queried and even then keep it brief (don’t be cagey though).
>>2817686Tommy is that you?

I went on my first ever trip to SEA exactly a decade ago. I told myself it was a once in a lifetime experience. I've subsequently been back 5 times. I'm not a coomer either. Once you've experienced the escapism of travel, you will always ceavw more, especially if you're a neet type living in a dull suburban nightmare. I'm counting down the days till I go away again, 5 months and counting. Without that to look forward to, I'm not sure what I'd do. Personally, I aways feel more confident and motivated upon arrival home having had a reset abroad. The feeling of dissatisfaction kicks in again after about a month and within a couple of months, I'm already desperate to escape again. It's no way to live in all honesty. It does start to lose the magic too. You never recapture the adventure of that first trip. You can always discover new places but it's like anything, it starts to feel same old if you do it repeatedly.
>>2817786Of course it is you dingbat
American exceptionalism really wears on the soul. I traveled a lot when I was young 18-23. I traveled extensively around Europe and to a lesser extent SEA. I've been to most countries in Europe minus Belarus, Portugal and Russia. Since 23 I've drank the Kool aid of American life. I'm 31 now, I make 120k a year, bought a condo and have a 401k worth almost 200k. I'm so tired emotionally. The only placed I can walk to in my neighborhood is a convince store. I have to drive everywhere. My friends and family still live in my city but they are all at least 15 mins by car away. This past spring I essentially took a sabbatical from work and spent 2 months overseas. I didn't even do anything, my time was spent in Airbnbs for 2+ weeks at a time. 2 weeks on the Amersee in Bavaria just existing away from America. Reading books, hiking and being a regular at the bar closest to my rental. Same thing in a village in the Julian alps, later in Rovinj. It was perfect. While I understand that you are not experiencing "real life" when you are visiting these places you can't help but notice how much happier, healthier and well adjusted the locals seem. The pace of life feels more appropriate and measured. The air is cleaner.I'll probably kill myself or find the balls to liquidate everything I own and see how long I can live in the Bulgarian countryside or something. Whatever I have now isn't working
>>2817847if you hadn't thrown your money in the trash of a 401k you could have passive income of $12,000/year right now. sell your shitty condo and you could have $25,000/year USD in passive income (or more depending on condo value), enough to live a simpler life somewhere abroad with lower cost of living. You would still have to work but not ever have to truly worry about finances btw if u do kys though make sure to first give your wealth to white nationalist NGOs and civil rights groups (Counter Currents, Students for Western Civilisation, Generation Identity, Patriotic Alternative), thanks

On the flip side, your travels become a lot more comfy on subsequent trips because you get better at making good choices and avoiding mistakes.>>2817781>You gotta put some money away to build a life worth living at homeI'm very happy that I did not buy into this sort of advice, or else I would've trapped myself in the cycle of wagecuckery and speculative investment, enslaving myself and my financial resources to the system in the pursuit of "freedom" through wealth. Remember, wealthy people get wealthier off the backs of poor people striving to acquire wealth for themselves. This is why they love to goad, taunt and bait you into putting more effort & resources into the system.I spent nine months overseas recently and paid exactly $0.00 in bills back home during that period. Yet when I came back to my place, showing up on foot with my luggage, it took all of 30 minutes to unpack my bags, plug in the appliances and feel right at home again. The life I've currently built in the high-altitude town of my choosing has required me to invest all of $300 in secondhand furniture, artwork, cookware and bedding. It has everything I need and nothing I don't. Was it easy to get to this point? No. I had to endure years of lonely wanderings, months of toil, countless mental struggles, and dozens of failures to get to where I am now. Forging your own path outside the conventional good-goy education - career - investment pipeline is never easy, but it has profound rewards, including an unshakeable belief in your own exceptionalism. >>2817858>everywhere in North America is the sameNeverTraveller detected, opinion discarded

>>2817781>What really sucks are bitter people at home who resent you for “having it all”. You’ll get a lot of static no matter how cheery or positive you try to be.this is my experience with wisconsin people in a nutshell about everything, not just travel. it feels like there's footloose laws on everything that isnt being overweight, addicted to food+alcohol, and being perpetually bored+souless+miserable. its a shame because I could really dig the nature and small towns otherwise. but these people straight up ruin everything whenever im around them
>>2818245I’ve gotten pretty good to the point where I only get shit from a few really unwinnable misanthropes who hate everyone anyways. The trick is really don’t brag at all, don’t even talk about traveling. When you get home just slide back into normal everyday life, and ask more about what other people have been up to than talk about yourself. Drive a modest car, know what’s going on with the Badgers/Packers, dress well but not ostentatiously…and eventually people will get over their engrained crabs in a bucket mentality. But if you go parading in like a pompous asshole expecting them to kneel at your throne you got a whole other thing coming. I spend so much time in Chicago where that sort of behavior is way more acceptable that I actually enjoy Wisconsin’s quirks.
>>2818259i dont say or do anything. i literally do nothing and mind my own business. just existing around these people is enough to set them off. especially other men. im not from wisconsin and have no idea what im doing to them. i dress like shit because everyone here dresses like shit so theres no expectation to not look like a trashy slob. which is kinda convenient. it just feels like most people are bitter miserable sore jealous coping losers that are totally dead inside or were never alive, and I know its not me because this all stops happening as soon as I get on a plane and go elsewhere. the only thing I expect from anyone is basic manners and minding their own business but on average thats asking far too much of these peoplekek was just looking into going down to chicago for a week because im sick of dealing with these people

>>2817798it's even worse when you think "fuck I love it, I should move to Asia". it loses its magic pretty quickly too and then you're stuck in a foreign country surrounded by chinament. moved to asia 7 years ago and consider suicide daily
>>2817509No, it still hits me dozens of trips later. Certainly a factor in why I continue to travel, it opens your eyes to how much potential exists in this world, both for better and worse. I also very much wish American vacation/time off norms were higher, my friends can only coordinate 5-7 days a year, leaving our shared experiences short and bittersweet while ensuring the ennui persists.
>>2818260I used to work in a language school in Thailand. I opened up too much about a source of income that was more than i made at the school. When talking to some colleagues into crypto, I alluded to the fact I had a few Bitcoin. The level of visceral seethe and bitterness that emanated from them, their contorted faces and gritted teeth over the following months..I'm the kind of guy who is happy for other people, the sort of person who offers congratulations and encouragement to go further when people are finding success. But many people cannot even see l, let alone constrain their envy and rage at their peers doing well. Always hide your power level.
>>2818333Traveling or living abroad is just aesthetic, it's a backdrop not a feature. I recently retired and while not suicidal, can't see the difference if I live or die, because I'm not needed. I provide no value. I exist every day only to trigger my dopamine receptors. >Maybe get a coffee and croissant, workout, massage, tinder And all it is triggering dopamine. And after a while, it gets harder and harder to trigger and you're left with emptiness. I'm an ant without a colony. Wondering around without purpose.
>>2818352It's been proven that retiring or just stopping working in general can make people become depressed, feel without purpose, and it can even make you live significantly shorter lives. I feel like if you're retired, it's probably good to try to find some work you enjoy, and work at your own pace, just to have something to do

I will stay abroad until the bank account is getting critically low, often the point where I can barely afford the flight back. So I don’t really have time for the ennui and instead am scrambling to get to work, put a life together and starting grinding back my savings for my next trip abroad. Then once I’ve got $20,000 or so accumulated I’m looking at flights a few weeks out to do it all again. About a 3-6 months overseas / 6-9 months in the USA working cycle.
