Yesterday I bought a domestic flight without checked luggage for the first time in all my travels, which will set the pattern for the remainder of my travel season. Currently planning on buying a new backpack, apparel, shoes, phone, etc. after arriving in South/Southeast Asia this December. It makes no sense to paypig for taxed tariffed goods in JewSA and then pay some more to have them transported back to the countries where they were manufactured.

What do you travel with that must be stowed in checked baggage? Yeah, having a Swiss Army knife or Leatherman multitool is very handy when you're traveling, especially if you're a DIY kinda guy, but if you plan on doing a lot of flying on budget airlines, the cost of checked luggage will with time exceed the value of the items you are traveling with. Additionally, in China (and Laos) I've heard you can't bring knives into a train station, so you might as well leave them behind.

Some airlines offer their best deals two months out. Booking more in advance can result in higher prices. Fiddle around with the travel dates as well to see what kind of price variation there is. Wew lad, I got from Europe to China and back for less.
There is a trick, and that is to quit work and have a fuckload of time to spare. When dates don't matter and you have all the time in the world for layovers, you can string together a bunch of dirt cheap separate ticket flights that'll take you anywhere for next to nothing and perhaps get to see a few extra cities along the way. But if you're dead set on going direct on, say, June 14th till July 1st, yeah, you're absolutely correct, there's no trick in the world that'll help you. You're entirely at the mercy of airline pricing algorithms.
What you can safely do though is ditch the checked luggage. Laundry shops exist for a reason, you don't really need more than 10 days of clothes. Knives and shit you can just buy wherever for pennies and bin them later.

In my experience, they're really not much cheaper than hunting for a good deal directly from an airline. Also, good long layovers which allow you to spend a night in an intermediate city are not very common with those third-party tickets. In fact, very few airlines offer long-layover flight itineraries (unless you know of a secret hack to get the long layovers, then by all means share it). It's so much better to buy a single ticket with an 18-24 hour layover between flights than it is to buy two separate tickets. You get to show up at the airport the next morning refreshed from a good night's sleep with your boarding pass already in your pocket.

The airlines I've flown were strict about carry-ons. Don't bitch and moan when they weigh your items at the gate and charge you extra.

It's acshually quite nice not to have to lug your suitcase or duffel around when you're visiting a city on a stopover. If it's gonna be an overnight stay, don't forget to put a fresh change of clothes in your daypack before you check your bag.

Turkmenistan airlines is probably the cheapest way to get between western Europe and China, they have some flights to SEA as well but idk how economical those are
the only disadvantage is that there is usually only one flight per week, if you want more flexibility or to go one-way there are probably other cheaper options
coming back from Beijing to London one-way I also once went via Astana Airlines which was £250ish for a 3 hour layover in Almaty and an extra 5hrs of flying compared to direct (we had to dodge Russia and Ukraine). Getting two Lufthansa A -> B and B -> C tickets will never ever be cheaper than one A - > B -> C. The algorithm hates pricing direct flights low and you'd be getting two of those here.
What can be cheaper though is getting Wizz Air A -> B and Air Asia B -> C. Vastly cheaper at times, to the point you might just spend two or three nights chilling in B and still come out ahead financially.
