How safe is it?
I kinda wanna go but I'm scared about being detained for political chess as an American.

I'm sure the Venezuelan intelligence services are just waiting to get their hands on a 19 year old parking lot attendant from St Louis. Imagine all the political leverage they would get. You wouldn't even make it out of the airport. Probably best to stay home.

It doesn't matter if I'm a parking lot attendant any american can be used for political capital. That's kind of the point of arbitrary detainment lol

Also, I've already been accused and interrogated for working with the US gov't in another country when I was just an innocent tourist hence why I'm paranoid. They will just see a gringo tourist and wonder WTF I'm doing here.

This but unironically. Guess you don't follow the news but they've been arresting all sorts of tourists for ransom and propaganda, 6 American tourists, 4 Spaniards, a German, an Argentinian, an Italian, a Belgian, etc. People with ordinary jobs. 68 in total.

You'd be better off going to North Korea tbqh, this is probably the most dangerous destination an American could visit today. What's the draw anyway? Colombia next door has the same culture, food and climate but the power doesn't go down and it doesn't have a psycho dictator.

He's probably a tankie

Yeah, they actually are. Maduro is engaging in "hostage diplomacy" to try to stop being fucked by sanctions. No different from Putin arresting random American tourists for "espionage" and throwing them in the gulag so he can do prisoner swaps for actual Russian spies.

Remember that dumbfuck who got honeytrapped in Vladivostok last year? Goes to fuck some Russian slut, she screams that he stole something from her apartment, cops arrest him, now he's in Russian prison until Putin wants to force another trade.

Wouldn't a tankie think the hostage diplomacy is just Western Imperialist Capitalist Reactionary Propaganda TM and those tourists really did steal whatever items?
