I've been an expat for the last 12 years and I have very few white friends here. But I'm kind of the odd one out. Most expat nationalities stick together - the French especially, the Americans to a large degree as well because no one else will put up with them (Americans abroad are an awful breed, but for some reason Americans are very pleasant when I visit their home country).
A lot of white expats are very covetous of the cachet of living abroad. It’s wrapped up in their personal brand that they portray across social media and in daily interaction. They want what they are doing to be unique, intrepid and meaningful—and they definitely don’t want to share in any of the self-perceived “glory”. Americans are particularly like this, but nationalities of all stripes can exhibit it.It’s like dealing with the embassy is extremely difficult and onerous, and socializing with embassy workers doubly so. They resent you for being in that country because they feel it cheapens their experience. It can be very hard to penetrate this wall until you get them intoxicated then it whithers away.

I’m not even in tech. I’m a regular ass mechanical engineer designing plumbing and air conditioning systems and I work remote. I did the international thing for a while but it’s too fucking shitty have to be on meetings at 2 am because of the time difference. My sleep and work schedule were all kinds of fucked. So, it’s not enough to have a remote job, but also a remote job that is completely hands off in terms of interaction with other people in real time. There are plenty of remote jobs, shit the US government is full of them. What you guys are after is the remote job that lets you live in Thailand and not have to actually talk to anyone except through email and that’s rough.
