/trv/, how do you protect yourself from the lesser privileged people while you travel?

The male drug addicts can be huge pests hoping to wear you down and make you pay them to go away, but of course doing so only encourages them to continue their aggressive begging. You have to get firm with them sometimes, or if they seem reasonable, explain to them that your money is the only thing you have, and that if you gave money away to everyone who asked for it, you'd have to start asking for money to feed yourself. Surprisingly, that approach worked with quite a few hungry Venezuelan bums in Colombia.
Violence. Homeless bums only understand violence
