Why do people praise swiss mowed gras and barns so much?
It's like if Appalachia actually got their shit together - but - more expensive as a result. There's all these abandoned fire towers in Appalachia and I always wonder why you would just LEAVE something built 50-100 years ago instead of replacing it, they aren't that complex of a structure and it would really draw visitors. The only conclusion I can get is that they don't want visitors. And often the best views are enjoyed only by the houses set on the hills and can't even be seen from the road let alone getting a proper place to pull over and even if there ARE views they tend to be overgrown. It's such a weird place when you realize Switzerland exists and has similar mountains but far more developed.

>>2821679As an American the idea of anywhere in Switzerland being "Rural" is kind of funny. There are places with lower population density but absolutely not rural. The whole country is so extremely well connected with objectively the best infrastructure on the planet. I think people enjoy it because it's a mix of natural beauty and the comfort of civilization around every corner. America has large swaths of land that are just as equally beautiful if not more but there is nothing around for 300 miles expect a gas station and a sundown town.
>>2821690sorry if that was unclear, I meant to compare my impression of Switzerland vs American Appalachia in that they are both mountainous regions but Switzerland has a much more developed and refined infrastructure for tourism.
>>2821690They use barbed wire for pasture fencing in the Carpathians? I thought barbed wire was an Americas thing. >>2821757Switzerland is one of the few countries in the world whose GDP per capita has steadily kept ahead of the USA since the mid 1970s. The general European attitude of public service in every aspect of life has not carried over quite as well into America, particularly Appalachia. Travel in America requires a much greater degree of self-sufficiency.>>2821682>they don't want visitorsThis is true. West Virginians actually complained when New River Gorge was made a national park. "What the hell, now this place is going to be crawling with tourists! We'll have to get jobs and start businesses! Newcomers will start buying up land and building grand new houses!"Americans are widely stereotyped as materialists, but huge swaths of the country are full of die-hard anti-materialists who hate the idea of progress or economic growth with a passion. They don't even want government to build libraries or schools or bike paths. They just want to be forgotten and left alone.
>>2824348>They just want to be forgotten and left alone.Yeah, we don't want people like you near us
>>2824348Anon, the tamest Swiss rural countryman, police, and their laws are going to make America look GOAT'd>Why do people praise swiss mowed gras and barns so much?Because it is expensive and you know that only the wealthy are coming by meaning no niggers. When people say they like "the Swiss countryside" what they are saying is "That goodness there aren't any poors around to muck up things"
>>2821679switzerland is very pretty, very well developed and very expensivelots of beautiful things to see, very easy to get around even if you're a fat clueless american, and the price keeps the riff raff away essentially everything the western upper middle class wants from a destination. go at the right time of year and you can even get some skiing in >>2824348barbed wire is very commonly used to contain livestock all over europe, cattle and sheep are bloody everywhere. horses too in some places
>>2824479>barbed wire is very commonly used to contain livestock all over europe, cattle and sheep are bloody everywhere. horses too in some placesHuh? That seems like something PETA would shut down, you use that stuff to keep robbers and prisoners at bay dude not animals. WTF is wrong with europeans are all the animals there tame and shit
>>2821745>There are places with lower population density but absolutely not ruralDo you even know what rural means?
>>2824627How many villages are visible in this one single landscape overview? Yeah, this is not what most Americans consider rural. 30 minutes' drive to the nearest supermarket, now that's rural.
>>2824672Yeah well most Americans are retarded what can I do
>>2821679I lived in Switzerland for a little over six years, and there’s a lot to like about its combination of pretty mountain vistas and some of the best infrastructure on the planet. But everyone ITT who has alluded to the fact that the place is intensely developed is absolutely right: there’s basically no real wilderness in the entire country. It’s very small, and has been fairly densely populated (and farmed) for many centuries, the last two or so of which have been unusually peaceful and increasingly wealthy. Even on a multi-day hike in the mountains, you’re likely to have a gondola, funicular, and train station at both ends, and well-groomed, clearly signed (and probably paved in parts) trails throughout.I think it’s slightly overrated as a tourist destination, personally; you can get better food and friendlier peoplefor half the price in most of its neighbors. But you can’t get better transit or cleaner streets, and it’s certainly pretty to look at.
>>2824746Rural doesn't mean wild
>>2824746>for half the price in most of its neighborsNot anymore. The prices almost evened out since the chinkyflu thing in the "cool" areas of our neighbors. You look at hotels €120/night and lift passes, roughly €100/day( 81 Lech/Zürs, 90 Davos, 79 Les 3 Vallées, 77 Alta Badia) in winter and about half that in summer. Food and going out wise yeah you can still save money if you downgrade but on the same tier/quality the differences got small unless you cook your own food. Slope restaurant prices are pretty much the same now anywherePint of Beer 8Coke 5Mixed cold plate 20Spaghetti 15Fries 10Schnitzel and fries 20Stew with a Knödel/Potatoes whatever 20Pork steak with whatever 30Children menu/portions 10t. Swiss that took the family always to Austria/Italy/France to skii/hike but the value is gone now.
>>2824884For us in France if you're not living close to a skiing resort, it has become a upper middle class and richfag only leisure. I'm suspecting that an increasing influx of rich foreigners and worsening climatic conditions have driven prices up. Back when I lived in Switzerland it looked a bit more easily accessible tbqh, but as always gentrification ruins everything - just look at how Verbier is basically a British enclave nowadays.
>>2824940Yeah it's for sure not a "sport for everyone" anymore sadly but we still go 2x a year for 14 days, totally worth it.>Verbier is basically a British enclave nowadays. That's a brit phenomena what ever 3-4 vacation spots they choose the entire country will flock to and turn it in no time into a brit ghetto just with sun/beach/snow/mountains.
>>2824948Sure but I've also noticed more and more americans and canadians talking about skiing in Europe. I don't know if it correlates with the amounts of skiers or if that is just more spotlight being brought on them, in any case I think that it isn't a good thing at all.
>>2824884Interesting. I always found the skiing itself—lift tickets, gear rental, etc.—very affordably priced in Switzerland, but accommodation and especially food and drink were still noticeably cheaper in Italy, Austria, or France. We took our last skiing holiday in the Dolomites, just this past season, and definitely spent a lot less than we usually did in Laax or the Val d'Anniviers.Worth noting, though, that we have always done a lot of self-catering on ski holidays, so some of my most frequent price comparisons have been things like Conad vs. Coop, where the differentials still seem pretty strong.
>>2824983>WeSchizo detected
>>2824985>Schizo You misspelled “married father of two.”
>>2824986I will never understand people using "we" out of context when talking to strangers who know nothing about their life. Sounds like some kind of mental illness.
>>2824995Fair enough. And I just noticed that I did mix singular and plural pronouns above, with no explanation of who I meant by “we.” Apologies for the lack of clarity. I’m not crazy. But I think it’s safe to assume that anyone posting here and using “we” is probably talking about people he is traveling with. Or they’re the king of England. Could still be psychotic, in either case.
>>2824953>just more spotlight being brought on themWell it finally jumped over to the NA that skiing in the Europe is a very different thing culturally and it's attractive to them. Ski the day and have a party a night in town instead of staying in what is mostly disconnected resorts in the US.>>2824983Self-catering is the key component here. If you factor it in you can save a substantial amounts, still for us (married, father of four) the saving evaporate once we factor in travel costs and even with a lot of self catering it only becomes substantial if we downgrade from a A+ Arena to a B- to C Arena with way lower lodging costs and lift tickets dropping to the €50/day region per Adult. Downside is the quality of the ski school instructors for the kids also drops A LOT while the price drop is insignificant.
>>2824627yea, no mcdonalds within walking distance
>>2824995Sounds like you have autism
>>2825246>autismWe're on 4chin mate what do you expectThat still doesn't make it not retarded, it's basically entitlement by assuming that people reading him should know about his life
