I've been traveling all year. Africa, South Asia, SEA. I have just one carry-on bag. I've taken almost 40 flights including connections.I love the flexibility of being able to move at a moment's notice and taking cheap flights and walking straight out the airport. Anyone else keeping it ~10kg?
>>2822079No, I like wearing clean clothing.
>>2822084Then wash clothes more regularly. You're welcome
>>2822085>I spend half my life doing laundry
>>2822086Imagine being so poor you do laundry yourself
>>2822087Imagine being so poor you can't hire someone to handle luggage.
>>2822079Right here. If you look at the allowable dimensions for a carryon and personal item and optimize between the two, there is no need for a checked bag. Yeah the mobility is nice but it’s knowing for sure your shit isn’t going to get lost or damaged. I use a canvas parachute bag and because it’s soft and flexible it lets me “cheat” the size restrictions a bit.
>>2822087>Imagine being so poor you do laundry yourself>being able to move at a moment's notice and taking cheap flights pick 1
>>2822100Laundry costs me less than a dollar per kilo in every country I've been to this year. And your washing your socks in the sink?
>>2822079I have a backpack just like that that I use every trpk. I can only go anywhere 2 weeks at a time though
>>2822094>canvas parachute bagYikes. Hard no. I like to look in a map and think>3km. I'll walk it.Not walking it with that unweildy thing
I used to be hard carry on only, then I realized it's not that big a deal to spend 10-15 minutes waiting for my bag to come down the line.Opens up be being able to take quality deodorant and shampoos with me rather than winging it in some countries for summer(fuck you Japan why is it all dogshit)I can bring liquor with me from a cheap country into some expensive place like Singapore or HK with ease.I have far more options in terms of clothingI'm not putting so much pressure against my laptop and tablet along with other work devicesPacking for the next place is far easier.I don't have to juggle rubber band rolling my shit to get it to fit.Is it possible to 1bag? Sure, if you're staying near the equator and can get by with 4 pairs of shorts, light shirts, and maybe 1-2 good pants/outfits; yeah great but you're also facing a big problem with airlines these days. Being stuck with 10kg or you pay nearly last minute checked bag costs for no real gain. An extra 30 minutes waiting for my bag >>>>>>>>>> weeks/months of comfort and not having to rebuy questionable quality goods. Especially in winter when I often want to go somewhere with snow.
>Do one bag>always get stopped by customs asking why I think 1 bag is enough for +60 days>do checked bag>no one turns a blind eye to my long-term travel plans
>>2822103I like it because the square shape makes it perfect to sit on. It’s not that bad to lug around if you put the shoulder strap across one shoulder and the hand strap on the other.
>>2822123What airline weighs your carryon?
>>2822137Lots of Asian airlines specifically are asking you to weigh it.Jeju AirBusanAirZipairAirAsia(random but sometimes happens)PeachScootFinnair because of courseOff the top of my head, the "cheaper" airlines you would go for 1 bagging are getting kind of anal as of late. 10kg just doesn't work for me with a laptop+tablet+powerbank+clothes+charger(s).
>>2822101>Laundry costs me less than a dollar per kilo in every country I've been to this year. And your washing your socks in the sink?Calling bullshit, outside where the airbnbs that had this included I've never seen it as low as a dollar for 8-10kg worth of clothing. The lowest I think I've seen is probably Malaysia but that was still around 2.40 dollars for a wash and dry. Not to mention the "detergent" in those machines are often absolutely lowest of low tier that do fuck all to keep your clothes fresh. You're almost better off hanging them in the shower with how crap it gets in some places. What rat den are you going to where it's ~1 dollar for a wash and dry, because it for sure isn't in main cities in asia.
>>28221427 kg free carry-on limit for Air Asia, VietJet and the other budget-tier Southeast Asian carriers. That's really squeezing it. I've always done backpack + duffel on previous trips, and checked the duffel. Typically, the backpack weighs around 6 kg and the duffel about 8 kg. This time I'm thinking of buying a single large-ish backpack while in India. On crowded walkways, having a duffel hanging off your hip creates a wide-load obstruction akin to being a 300 pound fatso.>>2822087It's not about poverty, but rather about getting my laundry done in a timely manner. The full-service laundry facilities take 24 hours or more in many countries, and many of them close on the weekends. As someone who moves frequently, this means I have to plan my itinerary around doing laundry and sticking around until 2 PM to pick it up, instead of popping into the 24 hour self-service laundromat and getting my clothes done in an hour or so.
>>2822147What part of PER KILO do you not understand? 30 baht per kilo for full-service laundry is a common price. 8 kilos would be 240 baht.
>>2822149>The full-service laundry facilities take 24 hours or more in many countries,This is one reason I HATE PH>24hr wash self service>some older pino ladies there>not sure if staff or just washing their own clothes>SIRS WASH YES?>No, I can wash it>yes sirs I wash>no thanks>Sirs only 80p.. eight zero sirs>no I can>SIRS PLEASE I WASH>end up having to go to some double the price 24/7 self service by a mall, it's always by a mall across town>get harassed by staff when they notice me sitting to do the laundry for me still>SIRS I WASH CLOTHES SIRSJust let me do my shit and go
>>2822151I had to fly to Bangkok with a bag full of dirty clothes because the only laundry place near my lodgings in Pasay had a huge backlog and refused to accept another customer.
>>2822149>It's not about poverty, but rather about getting my laundry done in a timely manner. As someone who moves frequently, this means I have to plan my itinerary around doing laundry and sticking around until 2 PM to pick it up, instead of popping into the 24 hour self-service laundromat and getting my clothes done in an hour or so.I also wash my own clothes for convenience. It's like half the time laundry, half the time myself. Not a money thing. I only have 4 pairs of socks and 4 pairs of underwear. Sometimes I'll see I won't have fresh socks for tomorrow. Sometimes it's easy to put your socks in yours hands and take a shower
How are you doing 1 bag in SEA? That's about 3-4 clothes tops. Are you simply staying inside virtually all day to avoid any sweat, random rain showers, or just city smog stank? I'm not fat but even I know perspiration adds up and the soap hear is pretty low quality for the most part. What I would do for some Old Spice or even Axe Body wash that works. Feels like I always have to use 3x the normal amount compared to home to achieve the same levels after the gym in the morning.
>>2822305>That's about 3-4 clothes topsNo.3 shirts3 tee-shirts1 hoodie3 pairs of shorts2 pairs of pants1 extra pair of sneakers for hiking I slam it all in there and I'm probably just over 10kg but I never pay extra weight because I online check-in, and even if I don't check-in online, Asian airlines aren't like Ryainair, they never weigh my carry-on.
>>2822308>Asian airlines aren't like Ryainair, they never weigh my carry-on.They most certainly do anon, I just flew Jeju Air the other week and they asked me to put my backpack on the scale. Luckily they allow up to 10kg and I was at 8.6, but yes the budget airlines certainly do these days. You're one bagging in SEA with a hoodie and shoes in there? Fuck you packing that like. Is your laptop some small 13.3 inch? How are you not stanking up the bag with hiking shoes. Not that I think it's impossible but man you're really not leaving any room for souvenirs or extras/spare things.
>>2822310>Jeju AirNever flown them. I'm just referencing AirAsia, Cebu Pacific, Air India.>Is your laptop some small 13.3 inch?Yeah. Exactly. And a HDMI cable for when I'm in Airbnbs and want to watch movies >How are you not stanking up the bag with hiking shoes?Haven't been hiking that much desu. The laundries almost always wash your shoes for like a dollar or something though. I keep lots of things in bags within my bag>I've been living abroad for almost 25 years now. No home to put souvenirs in. But when I buy a new item of clothing, an old one has to go.I've only actually been traveling this light for the last few years. I never imagined how good it would feel to be this light. Any time you get annoyed with a situation or feel like moving, you just grab a small bag and walk. I didn't know how cumbersome a backpack was until I abandoned it for good. Try a short trip real light like this, you might convert
Batik Air never weigh carry-on too
>>2822079good grief no. why would i bother doing that?sure it's ok if you are just going somewhere short haul for a couple of daysbut if i am travelling in business class on long haul i will usually have an allowance of two or three big bags plus carry on plus laptop. the total allowance is sometimes over 100kgall my bags have wheels, i am not hauling them on my back like a fucking sherpa. airports have trolleys/cartseven if you only have a carry on you still have to go through security which is the most time consuming part of moving through an airport. especially if you have shampoo etc in your bag and you have to keep taking it out and putting it in one of those little plastic bags even if i have to wait a few minutes for my bags to show up (which if the airport is doing their job properly shouldn't happen if my bags are tagged as priority) it is still nothing compared to having to continually do laundry etc when i am supposed to be enjoying my trip"travelling light" is for peasants
>>2822321I'm early retired. Make sure you have that report on Kevin's desk by Monday sharp.
The amount of ego and petty one-upsmanship in this thread makes me want to never meet any of you during my travels, bunch of insufferable faggots
>>2822328>I'm early retired. good for you anon. i could afford to retire years ago, but i enjoy running my own company>Make sure you have that report on Kevin's desk by Monday sharp.huh?
>>2822341>good for you anon. i could afford to retire years ago, but i enjoy running my own companyGood for you anon. I sold my company for 100 billion dollars years ago.
>>2822321>I have an allowance>I run my own company Surely you mean "I give myself an allowance"?
>>2822338>The amount of ego and petty one-upsmanship in this thread makes me want to never meet any of you during my travels, bunch of insufferable faggotsYou're too shy to talk to me

>>2822400>People behave differently in different settings. I personally try to be much more of a douchebag on 4chan than in real life.This. It's just shit talk banter. Anon is taking himself too seriously or has autism
>>2822400>I personally try to be much more of a douchebag on 4chan than in real life.it's weird that people do that. this board would be much better if it wasn't so full of people being deliberately twattish. that's 4chan i suppose. when i just post normal stuff on here there's always someone who wants to be a fucknut in response. personally i find maintaining that level of fucknuttery to be too much like hard work.
>>2822310The first thing I do when I check in to a room is take the shoes and dirty laundry out of my luggage, opening the dirty laundry bag to let it air out and taking the shoes out of their bag as well. I've always worn breathable canvas-top or mesh-top shoes along with odor-resistant Dickies work socks, so smelly sweaty shoes aren't really a problem even when walking 10+ km a day in a hot & humid climate.>>28223086 shirts and only 3 pairs of (boxer) shorts? I always change one when I change the other. Normally I wear my sneakers and pack my sandals, but if it's wet outside, then the sneakers go in the bag to stay dry. Also, I chose to pack a lightweight puffer jacket instead of a hoodie. It weighs less and is far more effective at retaining heat.>>2822305Southeast Asia is a very open-air place, full of cooking fumes, exhaust fumes, burnpile smoke, sewage smells and other unpleasant odors. A little sweat smell is not going to be noticed unless you're in a confined space - then you can put on some deodorant that smells like restroom cleaner. Speed Stick Power Fresh is my go-to for bus rides. It's dirt cheap and carry-on sized. If you get sweaty on a morning hike, A/C turned on high dries out a T-shirt pretty rapidly.
>>2822417Have you tried Reddit?
>>2822079I use a 1 pound backpack in all my travels with three days worth of clothes. I try solo traveling as light as possible. I ended up taking my old 3DS on long plane rides because the steam deck was just too big. Plus a camera with a medium sized lens. Other than that I love the feeling of leaving the airport quickly.
I used to one bag, it's fine if you're doing a short 1 month maybe 2 months, stay. The checked bag is usually worth it for if nothing else not having to buy on the go and deal with whatever dice roll quality you get. Fine for hostel bunkbed lifestyle, gets really annoying after the second month especially when the seasons start to kick in. Yeah, if your entire life is cooming around SEA going Thailand->Vietnam->PH and restart, probably 0 issues sticking with mainly shorts and some easy breathing shirts. The downside is if you actually do go out a fair bit, every 3rd or 4th day you're going to be doing laundry. Not a huge ordeal, but if you've traveled a fair bit you know the hell that clothes can get from shitty detergent, water, and such. You're also just going to tie your ass down for 2-3 hours depending on the quality and location of the washers. You're also counting on the washer/dryers working perfectly and no weird shit going on because man some fuckers in SEA go and splash bleach on random shit. It's doable moreso if you aren't working abroad and don't need to carry a laptop+tablet, maybe an extra charger, possibly a small router, mouse, good headset for meetings, desk fan because that can make a meh hotel goat, etc
>>2822615So, laundry. That's it? I'm gonna carry a big backpack on my back because laundry every few days. No compelling.
>>2822615>You're also counting on the washer/dryers working perfectly and no weird shit going onIsn't that still gonna be a concern if I have 3 shirts or 6 shirts?
>>2822617Laundy, accessories for work being stored, seasonal clothing, etc. >>2822618Not as bad as an emergency depending how you do it. At worst with backups, idk why anyone with 6 shirts would only wash 3 seems like a waste.
>>2822630>Laundy, accessories for work being stored, seasonal clothing, etcFair. I have a note book, and external harddrive and I don't go to cold countries because I just don't want to. Most people like to stay in the good weather. But you can see there are not huge impediments to living light. The benefits outweigh the disadvantages
>>2822094A carry-on bag isn't good for that because you may be forced to check it. There's usually not enough room in the overhead bins because of people like >>2822079
>>2822712>A carry-on bag isn't good for that because you may be forced to check it.OP here. Never been forced to check it.>There's usually not enough room in the overhead bins because of people like OPI'm definitely lighter than most third worlders. I don't know how they get away with it. I see them come on with two carry-on bags. Look, if you need your hairdryer and all your creams and moisturizers, cool, bring your 80L backpack. Men are gonna be spartan.
>checked bagBut is it too much of a hassle walking 1 mile , taking buses , trains?Or am i just a retard and need to learn how to take taxis to bus or train places?I supppose i prefer 1 backpack (carryon, or checked) so if i have to walk a couple miles I can do soEnlighten me on bringing more bags plZ
>>2822724>Enlighten me on bringing more bags plZIt comes down to how much you travel and how much you leave your apartment when in another country.I use to be a heavy one bag person until I realized how useful a second bag was and standing at a bag collector was fine because I had to set my esim up anyways.Reasons I do a checked back1. My hiking shoes/gym shoes can go there, yes some gyms want separate shoes to work out there. Hiking shoes can get annoying for city walking.2. Pack extra clothing for winter wear, I do like to see snow for a few months out of the year.3. I can pack quality soaps and deodorants and take them to my next place without having to hunt down where they might be in X. Some of the worst things about Korea, Japan, HK, Taiwan, are the absolute DOGSHIT quality of bodywash and deodorant for your pits.4. Shit for my laptop or workspace I want is there, desk fan/extra cable/HDMI cord/personal mini router5. Anything too large like liquors or can't go through the gate checks can go in there6. (most)Anything I buy I can take home with meI basically like the fact I can have options, spare clothing's and such. If I only have 4 pairs of proper clothing to wash per time, and 1 pair to wear while washing. If Pupa or Raj went crazy with the bleach or the machine is on the frits and eats my clothes(happens trust me it happens), I'm not fucked trying to find new shit last minute of whatever quality.Again, it will 100% come down to how comfortable you are being in the 4-5 same pair of clothing for the length of your trip. If that fits for your needs great. I one bag all the time if I'm going <4wk somewhere but my normal 6-8 months abroad I often do a checked bag with all my personal and valuable "I need these items to live" in my carry on backpack.
>>2822745Thanks, can you also plz explain getting around etc? Trains? Taxis? Buses? Do you walk 2 miles while your 45 pound suitcase rolls on its little wheels behind you?

Traveling for work in my early to mid 20's made me numb to caring that much and it's a normality in asia. Most I've walked with luggage is maybe 2km because my hotel was in a retarded place. Not that big a deal when you stay somewhere for ~30 days a pop.>>2822825Gli.net makes good ones for repeaters, just get one with a sim slot that you can get a high data sim for. >>2822833Ok so do you usually just taxi to the hotel though? Instead of walking with your big ass bag?
>>2822844>Instead of walking with your big ass bagGiven my hotel is at the airport I use whatever is easiest and fits the budget. In Norway/Finland/Sweden I use the train+walking. In Cheap SEA places I do a Grab cabIn some places I do a bus if it's a long trip like in Hokkaido. How is this hard?
