Looking for some logistics advice. Haven't done any research yet but was thinking of doing a trip around the pacific northwest and seeing some of the national parks and forests. From New Zealand and have done lots of travels around Europe/Asia but never the Americas. Only been to California and Hawaii when I was 10.

> What's the best way to travel around?
Buses, trains, hitchike, rent a car?
> Where do I stay?
Hostels in the big cities? Lodges in the parks?
> Is it easy to meet people?
I'm well accustomed to making acquaintances in hostels, would there be any other early twenties people or will it be full of oldies?
My friends are pretty broke so I'll likely be alone.

I'm a Portland Native.

Depends really on your budget.

>Transportation
Without a doubt rent a car. Buses and long distance public transport is few and far between and the people on them are scum of the earth poors. Best to be avoided if your budget allows. Plus car lets you see more and is almost a necessity for travel in America. Using public transport to see national parks is probably impossible anyways.

>Hostels in the big cities? Lodges in the parks?
Hostel culture is pretty lackluster here, even disappointing on the west coast. Literal homeless bums use them. They exists but do your research and find the boutique traveler hostels. If you're going to be spending your time out in nature and driving around it would be worth it to either bring some outdoor gear or buy it when you arrive and stay in campgrounds/national parks. It's cost effective and is one of the great things this part of the country has to offer. There are usually a decent choice of budget hotels if you need a night in a real bed and shower/laundry services. A mix of camping/hotels is likely to be the best, maybe a hostel or two if passing through the big cities.

>Easy to meet people?
Absolutely. If you're in a big town go to any bar and just strike up a conversation. Even in small towns the local is great for meeting people. Even in the most conservative places in American people love to talk to white foreigners.

If you have any Portland specific questions let me know.

Just go to Seattle, dude. From there go to Olympic National Park or Mt. Rainier. Or hell if you don't want to go that far just take the ferry over to Bainbridge Island and walk the forests there.

Then come back to the city and get yourself some fent. The shit is GOD there. Spent a whole week last year staring at the pretty scenery with scary bums, 90% blasted out of my mind.

Almost forgot to leave for the airport and fucking died in a drug den there. Don't let people scare you, it's chill and 100% safe if you only go wild like this once per year. It's not addictive.

The whole experience though, that shit is all I think about. I have a few mill and a nice life and I contemplated never coming home. You get how people give up everything to stay high 24/7.

Especially in Seattle where the buildings and landscape and the ocean all conspire to keep you in this eternal happyland.

Western Washington here

Renting a car is the best option if you are wanting to go to Parks. If you do rent a car I would go all the way into Cali to the Redwood National Park.

Portland is an ok city with an ok public transport system (last time I was there at least) and I actually like it better than Seattle. I haven't done anything between the Redwoods and Portland though. I think there are some beach sand dunes that are popular.

Mt Rainer is a great place. Paradise trails are among the most beautiful I've ever done.

If you go west the Hoh rainforest is popular but its pretty far north in the peninsula. Kalaloch (clay-lock) was my familys annual camping spot when we were kids. Its right on the beach and a bit north (Second Beach I think) there are tide pools where all sorts of sea anemones are and small creatures get trapped there during low tide. Also Kalaloch is where that tree with the roots keeping it suspended above the ground is to if you wanted to be a turbofag you could get a picture of it.

If you go north to Seattle the Parks above Seattle aren't really that memorable. There is nothing up there that Mt Rainer or the Olympic Peninsula doesn't have.

You can camp at all of these parks I have mentioned but you have to reserve a site WAY far in advance because they are so popular.

For the most part Americans love foreigners. The PNW does have a cold, but not rude, attuite towards most but if you have any social skills you will be fine.

Hostels dont exist in America.
Do not hitchhike, you probably wont be murdered but you will have the police called on you and people will film TikToks and laugh at you.
Dont take the bus or train, unless you enjoy the shenanigans of the homeless and minorities and you are willing to accept you might not get to where you are going.
If you really must visit that part of North America go to BC like this anon said >>2827693 The rest of your countrymen and Australians seem to love it. Yes you will see poojeets working at Tim Horton's but the white Canadians arent all crazy and hostile like Americans.
If you do come to the USA, avoid the people at all costs unless you go to some rural white state like Nebraska where there's not much to see or do but at least society is still polite like in the 80s.
