There are mentally unstable drug addicts just going crazy driving everyone else to the other half of the car and people act like its normal. In a sane society these people would be arrested and forced into some sort of program. And this was in the fancy parts of Manhattan. I can't imagine what the poor neighborhoods must be like.

With basic common sense and awareness of their surroundings, almost everyone who gets on the subway gets off again without incident, every time they use it. There are wildly conflicting reports on subway crime levels—official figures suggest they’ve been trending downward for years (although most authorities concede that there was at least a moderate uptick in crime of most kinds during and after the pandemic), some insist that they’re skyrocketing, particularly assaults. The truth is surely somewhere in between. But it doesn’t change the fact that an overwhelming majority of people never get victimized.

Maybe?I would also describe the river as “safe enough.” The existence of potential danger is less significant to me in either scenario than the realistic, practical likelihood of harm. It’s obvious that the risk of danger is always going to be greater than zero. I’ll even concede that some of the variables that might make danger more likely are close enough to random to be entirely outside of my control (although some variables that reduce risk are controllable). Because the overall likelihood of danger is low, and there are things that I can do to make it even lower, I consider the subway safe on balance. Not perfectly safe, not 100% guaranteed to be safe, but safe enough in practice for me to be comfortable with the risk.My risk of someday getting into a car accident is orders of magnitude higher than my risk of getting assaulted on the subway. My risk of getting killed by a cow is never zero. But I am comfortable driving and feel safe around cattle.
