Going to Fiji and then hopping to some island countries, particularly want to go to Samoa. Flight less than $500 from Bangkok (where I am now). I've been to Vanuatu already, was amazing. Anyone got any experience? Can I get on a sailboat with no skills or vag? How to travel cheap between island nations?
Fiji is a bit like Bali, you want to get away from the airport because it's close and easy for fuckwit Australians, of which I am one. Few hours on the bus and you'll find a lot more Americans/Euros, the ones who can afford to go all that way. Much better experience imo. Resorts are sorta self enclosed which feels a bit weird sometimes, because you only really interact with tourists.Fiji was great though, I've been Vanuatu but like Fiji a bit more, people are so fucking friendly.Went for shark diving in Pacific Harbour by myself which was tremendous. Buying beer down the shops and these locals asking me if I'm by myself, then inviting me down the beach to drink with a bunch of them, big fire, drinking to morning, good times. Worth getting out of a resort when you can and stay in an airbnb or something. The bus around the island is comfy, pumping reggae beats with all these massive old islanders doing their shopping a town over. Once at a bus stop with all my luggage guy in a beat up old car offered me a lift, drove me 2 hours lol. Wouldn't even take money, just wanted someone to talk to, feel bad I didn't force him to take cash for it.Fiji is big, wish I explored more north.Yachties I don't know much about but there's plenty of people looking for temporary deckhands around the pacific, you have to put in work though and get lucky to find one going your way or have easy plans.Pretty common to see ads in Australia for this stuff going from NQLD.If you already have boat experience it's a lot easier to get a ride, they all know each other and there's a whole underground network of people floating around with them. Wholesome barter I think, they get free workers, people get free adventure and travel
