Taking a surf trip to Maui in December. This is my first surf trip.>How is the public transport? Will I need a rental car?>What's the board rental situation like?>Best surf spots for a beginner/intermediate?Also what's the best hostel there? Bonus points for private rooms because I'm an antisocial autist
you'll definitely want a rental car
>>2832610>hostelsyou have a better chance sleeping in your rental and showering at a beach park.
>>2832610Quite surprising how Americans can't into boats between their islands, and trains/buses around their islands, desu.
>>2834813For Hawaii specifically it requires deep water ships and hours of time, all attempts at ship based mass transit have failed as a result. Flights are short and cheap comparatively.
>>2835819Ha, fucking ironic given Polynesian history.
>>2832610>How is the public transport? Will I need a rental car?really really bad. yes you will need a rental car and its really expensive
>>2832610Good luck.I was a zogbot stationed in hawaii. The locals are VERY territorial of their surf spots and will actively harass or even fight you, especially on Maui where there are less Haole.
>>2835823If you are a skilled outrigger sailor or operate your own ocean ready boat you can sail between the islands today. I was referring specifically to the issues with mass transit ferries, which have been attempted several times, once with subsidization by the Hawaii government, and still failed.
>>2834813>AmericansYou meant Hawaiians. Hawaii is a vassal state in possession of the United States. It is not part of the American continent, and because of this, its inhabitants are less American than Puerto Ricans.
>>2835862>tf>vassal of USA
>>2835868I always wondered about this, as a thought experiment. What would the founding fathers say, if I could go back in time and tell them the 50th State of the Union would fly the Union Jack?
>>2835977I have to admit, I've never really thought about it, but this was hugely surprising:>Hawaii became the 50th state of the United States on August 21, 1959.It seems so recent. The Brits were fucking retards giving up such primo territory. An Australia-tier Hawaii would've been kino. Not too knowledgable about US history and the founding fathers, but were they actual anti-UK extremists, or just 'muh libertarian' anti-tax grifters? Surely the idea of the """British Empire""" stil lhaving status on a Pacific Island wouldn't be so alien to them?
>>2832610Just because it's an island doesn't mean it's easy to get around, also I would say as most US states/cities you need a car.Surfing in Hawaii seems scary to me, I've only surfed in Tahiti, with mild waves, super chill.
>>2834813The islands aren’t all terribly close together. It’s a 1 hour flight from the big island to kauai.
