I'm currently hitchhiking through rural Balkans (Serbia at the moment), Croatia->Bosnia->Montenegro->Albania->Kosovo->Montenegro->Serbia->Romania->SerbiaHaving the best time, people inviting me into their homes to drink, to sleep at their place, offering me food, asked me to go hunting rabbits with them, etc etc.People even offer me money, altho I try to turn them down.I'm Slovenian so people probably feel a kinship with me for being a fellow Slav, but I think any traveler/hitchhiker through this part of the world would have similar experiences. Its insanely low budget between balkan hospitality/sleeping in a tent/cheap hostels in big cities (15-20 euro a day).Any fellow hitchhikers here?
>>2835222Balkans has always been famous for hitchhiking around here. Stories sound fun, haha, any you wanna ellaborate on?I hitchhiked Albania a couple of times while waiting for buses. Always positive experiences. Done Poland, too. Easy in the mountains. Worst time was first time; trying to get from Krakow - Katowice. Was 18, and it took like an hour to get a ride. My couchsurfing hosts said it'd be no issue, and felt like a fucking dickhead holding a sign on the side of a major road. That put me off for a while.
>>2835222>Any fellow hitchhikers here?Yeah. But only done Asian countries: Indonesia, Malaysia, India etc. I am planning on going to the Balkans next year so monitoring this thread
>>2835222its an awesome way to travel but speaking the local language is huge imo. ive hitched in usa/germany/netherlands/belgium (usually not considered the most social places) but it was always amazing fun. ive also done it out of neccesity in random places in france/eastern europe and it always feels a lot more lame and awkward, because i cant say anything after exchanging 5 words. hitchhike interactions are epic partially because you wont ever see eachother again. one driver told me unprompted that he was on his way to cheat on his wife, and some dude ranted to me about his gambling addiction. some start random discussions about politics and stuff. people dont feel the need to mask/socially adjust around random hitchhikershow well can slovenebros understand serbs and croats? id think pretty much mutually intelligible right?
>>2835241I tried to hitchhike in Terengganu, but nobody stopped for me. Eventually a neighbor heading to work at the refinery gave me a ride to the next city. The public shuttle van driver - some paleskinned Asian lout covered in acne scars - blew right past my bus stop in the left lane. Riding with him you hear ding ding ding alerts of bus stops going by at 110 km/h. He never slows down, stops, or cares about serving the people along his route. There are no other public transport options along that stretch of beautiful sandy coastline, however.
