Anyone know if I can find a local guide in Beijing to give me a Tiananmen 1989 (天安门 一九八九年) tour?

Places I would visit before considering Western China:
>Ladakh (evisa)
>Tajikistan (visa free)
>Kyrgyzstan (visa free)
>Kazakhstan (visa free)
>Mongolia (visa free)
>Nepal (cash visa on arrival)
>Vietnam (evisa)
>Laos (cash visa on arrival)
Chinese are less welcoming than Polish people in my experience. However, all those stories of Chinese tourists behaving badly seem a bit exaggerated. Only once did I see Chinese engaging in unruly behavior in Bentong Malaysia, when some old Chinese guy grabbed something from another old Chinese guy, and after a minute of arguing and refusing to give it back, the grabber started his motorcycle and began driving off. The other guy ran after him grabbing at the bike handles as if to stop it, but the rider pulled away and continued down the road past me. The guy who got grabbed from said some choice words and returned to his shop. It didn't seem like he would be contacting the police or anybody about this incident.

That's not in the west

Yes.
Long story, but yes. The most kino parts are Chinese bhutan, chinese western stepes (that wierd bit north west of tibet) and the river that runs up into Lhasa from Burma.

Don't ask.

From looking at Google Earth the west consists of dry mountains and deserts, only lush parts are in the east and usually densely populated
