>>2837142I was in Saitama in the peak of summer this year. It was 38C and was probably the first time I thought I would die of heatstroke. Granted I was in Washinomiya and there was no shade anywhere, some guy outside a konbini asked if I was okay because I was drenched in sweat. As long as you're not a fat fuck, stay hydrated, and can find some shade you will be fine though. Just don't be a retard like me and pick areas with lots of shade and konbini around to cool down in.
>>2837142>due to SO's workWhy can't you just say "wife" or "girlfriend," why do you have to talk like that?
Why is /trv/ trashing Osaka? As long as you don’t get an apartment in Nishinari, you’ll be fine. The city is full of life and perfect for day trips (Wakayama, Kobe, Kyoto).
Me and gf went to a v small gyoza place near Kanda Station. We were eating and another white couple sat next to us. They were the loudest people I've heard in a while. They were so enthusiastic about everything and bellowed out to the staff in English (none could understand). This couple kept talking to us so we politely but quietly humoured them. I think the guy was mentally slow because he kept asking how we found the restaurant. I told him I just went on Google maps and searched for gyoza. He genuinely thought that was impressive. Then he kept ordering us and the staff drinks. Funnily enough when I got the bill, we weren't charged for the 4 drinks he ordered for us.Not to be all 'I'm not like other white people in Japan' about this, but I felt ashamed that the locals were staring at us because of this couple.
The next time I see a whitoid or whitoid(s) when I'm out and about in Japan, I'll beat them to bloody pulps before throwing them into the air and drop kicking them into the shadow realm to be banished there for all of eternity.all whitoids should be banned from japan.

I really missed my opportunity not studying my ass off in japanese for the last 8 months before coming here. Trying to meet people is basically impossible if you don't have a conversational level. I'm not in Tokyo/Osaka/Kyoto so it's probably harder in certain ways. I do not want to join an anglosphere but at the same time my nipponese is too broken to join some other type of group to socialize. I don't like bringing this angle up but I'm 6ft, white, athletic, and generally think I look approachable. I'm probably bringing myself bad karma by venting here but man I just want to meet people, either girls or guys. I don't know how the reality of it would be, but it seems like such an ideal situation to meet a girl and just have constant immersion of the language in the sense (and naturally too). In the US, I have friends/had gfs and also had no problem spending time alone and working on my hobbies or improving myself. However, I feel like this is a special opportunity and I'm blowing the start of it by not making connections.I do take classes here but during long weekends like we just, it's been 3 days of basically nothingness. I get outside and do huge walks around the city but it's not like spontaneous things happen. Maybe 20 years ago it would have but yeah.Sorry for blog. I don't want to vent to plebbit and I have no other community to fall to. I'm here for the next couple months and I guess I just gotta bunker down and studying as much as I can between class and my freetime.
>>2837369The Samar Island Massacre The Leyte Island Massacre and others
>>2837368NTA but some people can appreciate life even in the simple things, even if that's just a skyline of non deprecated buildings and some blue skies.
>>2837375I'm not really using it to make conversation but man, I'm surprised how many Japanese even in Tokyo can't speak English. Being able to ask for directions, paying at restaurants, ordering food, asking simple stuff to people (like for example, I asked someone why there were so many cosplayers that day). This stuff is really great, it allows me a degree of freedom and ease of mind that I would not otherwise have. I'm AT MOST very low N4, realistically N5, so it's not like my Japanese is advanced, but putting in a bit of effort pays off tremendously every day of my trip.
>>2837375>Next couple of monthsGrim. Atleast you're not me who came to Japan with 0 Japanese speech which made even ordering food at the restaurant a miserable experience. I think I will learn basic Japanese back at home and return so I can actually talk to people. It's one of the rare countries that deserves a second trip
>>2837380me in the middle
>>2837184>This couple kept talking to usHad this happen with an Australian couple at a sushi place. Also pretty loud considering we had 2-3 seats in between us at the bar counter. Didnt help either that it was our first day and we were beat thanks to jet lag.
>>2837375Even with conversational japanese it's hard as fuck making real connections here. Small talk, discussions about everything and nothing, sure, but making friends is hard and takes time, like everywhere else.Been here for one month, got some connections but no real friends yet, except maybe this girl I might have a crush on, which makes me want to km and wish I was emotionless like several years ago. It is what is it.
Should I shave my face again? It’s growing rather fast
>>2837375You wouldn't have gotten fluent in 8 months either. Even if you study your ass for a year you won't be able to do much more than read basic signs and tell people where you're from and what your hobbies are. Socializing with people is not about language skills, it's about not being autistic
>>2837184>Funnily enough when I got the bill, we weren't charged for the 4 drinks he ordered for us.Probably because they were having fun and drinking, and the staff loved them, while they thought the cringing shitbags, aka you, were annoying losers putting them on a weeb pedestal. Are foreigners welcome in bars? Last time i went i didnt go in a single bar... i just walked around drinking (in the designated drinking spots/smoking shelters) those little flask sized glass bottles of suntory that were at assorted kombinis.I always felt like bars and restaurants were a bit "intimidating" to just try walk into, especially all those places that are "upstairs" and you see all the signs for the place and have no clue what's on the menu or how much it costs and don't want to awkwardly walk in and then feel obligated to get something even if you dont like what you see because it would be rude to just leave?I did eat out a lot, but 100% ground level places (or inside malls) where i could see a menu from outside and know what i was gettin into. Mostly ramen joints (where you get the ticket from the machine) sushi, and tendon tenya and coco curry are amazing to sober and rest up a bit before more walking and drinking.Think the only proper bar i went to was some izakaya on the night i landed, and then hub later on; and frankly idk if id even consider those "bars", like if someone said they visited america and had a beer with their meal at chilis
What are good WW2 military history places? Been to yasukuni, will go again because it's nice. Planning to check out yokohama/mikasa this time, any other noteworthy similar places to consider?
Do I need to rent a car if I want to go visit the japanese alps during january?
Is it worth setting up a Schwab or Fidelity debit card vs just bringing cash?
>>2837533What are you going to bring 100000 yen in your pocket the entire trip?
>>2837534I was just going to bring some $100s, exchange, and keep most of it in the hotel safe.
>>2837514Why not join a small tour group? They will bring you to izakaya and bars that aren't on Google Maps (so less foreigners visit them) and even there you will see Japanese people don't react negatively to you (or at all). Some will even approach you, especially in Kansai. But yes you can definitely walk into bars. Some will apparently tell you it's "members only" (no gaijin) but I haven't encountered this. It can feel awkward when you go into those tiny hole in the wall places but it's such a different experience it's worth the initial awkwardness. It won't kill you to buy a sake or nama to be polite.
>>2837538It's really more of the language barrier that worries me, i hang out at bars alone or with buddies, or strike up conversations with people there; but this is in america or parts of europe with english speakersI also have a similar avoidance of going into restaurants even where i live unless they have a menu outside, i dont wanna go in to see a menu, see nothing i want, and then walk out awkwardly; and this is when i can read the menuEh, maybe i should just memorize some phrases to walk into a place and order a highball or beer and just give it a shot. How far in advance do you need to set up those tour things? Are they expensive? Ive never done guided tours in my life and always thought them more to be for old people

I've done it lads, I got my leave approved at work earlier today, and just bought the tickets. I'm going to Japan for 16 days and 15 nights in Feburary. Can't wait to go back.Tell me about Osaka, what's the appeal? I've never been there. Last time I was in japan I spent most of it in Tokyo and Sendai, this time I'm planning on visiting Sapporo for a few days, and probably bracketing that with staying in Tokyo (where I'm landing and taking off from anyways) but then I remember I've heard about Osaka, and then see that it's like a 2.5hr ride from Osaka to Tokyo, so I could 100% do some kind of FLY IN: X nights in Tokyo, train to Sapporo spend Y nights, train to osaka for the last Z nights type, and on the final day hop on the bullet train in the morning and go to Tokyo, and take the narita express to the airport, which combined is all like a <4hr deal and my departure flight is at like 6pm.Also would you say it would be important to get a rental car for Sapporo/Hokkaido? To see the naturey and old timey stuff? or is there sufficient trains to get to most nearby things worth seeing.
The amount of people I've witness get molested and felt up on the streets of tokyo is disturbing. This is at night mind you. I would never take my girlfriend to this city. I don't know if Japanese men think they are clever but it's so painfully obvious how so many of them purposefully walk into women and then grab their tits or such as if they accidentally did it. I don't understand how japanese girls put up with this.
>>2837564>How far in advance do you need to set up those tour things?I booked most of mine the morning of, although they can be fully booked. October is not the high season so it's easier. Try Get your guide.>Are they expensive?I spent around £20-£100 depending on duration and whether food and drinks are included>Ive never done guided tours in my life and always thought them more to be for old peopleThe ones where you drive around on a coach all day sometimes have older people and people who don't give a shit about the tour and will talk over the guide, push to the front of the queue for photos, etc. but the food & drink tours I've been on were usually more 30s-40s travellers. Still some older people but they're usually nice. One of my tour guides told me small group, walking tours and tours that you book on the day or just a few days in advance tend to draw a younger and more fun crowd.>language barrierIt's definitely a better experience if you speak some Japanese. They love it and start gassing you up. You can reach "adorable tourist making an effort" level in 6 months of focused work (about an hour a day). From what I've heard once you get much beyond this level the response declines as you get into "potential immigrant" territory.

>>2837533>>2837535I've been using a Wise card on my last few trips. You can essentially lock in the exchange rate whenever you feel like it's high and it's relatively easy to exchange back to your original currency afterwards if you have any leftover. Whenever I needed cash I could just go to any conbini and use their ATM, though they limit you to around 30k yen / day which is way more than enough for me. I exchanged quite a bit when it was around 1usd:160jpy and the transfer / ATM withdrawal fees are quite minimal compared exchange stations. If you have a card that has ATM fee reimbursement, it may be more convenient, but then you're subject to whatever the exchange rate is at the time (which may be good or bad.)

>>2837574If you've already experience the shinkansen, and even if you haven't, I would recommend flying to Sapporo instead of train. It's both faster and cheaper and you can always just shinkansen between Tokyo and Osaka if you really want to ride one.I took a similar trip showing my friend around this recent February coming from Tokyo fly to Sapporo fly to Osaka and shinkansen back to Tokyo. Within Sapporo and most of the western side of Hokkaido you don't need a car. If you're trying to get to certain points in the center or far east sides of Hokkaido you would probably want a car, but I sure hope you're accustomed to driving in the snow.If you're going for the Sapporo snow festival and have an interest in Miku, the Snow Miku festival happens usually around the same time in Otaru which is a nice day trip out of Sapporo. She, alongside her pet rabbit, are the official tourism ambassadors of Sapporo and I got to shake her hand and receive her business card.

I arrived in Fukuoka today, dropped my luggage and went for a quick trip to Onojo park. Slight headache but good to kill the time to check in later
Ok I don't know what I expected when people said Ikebukuro was for women only, and I know I'm a retard for coming anyway, but good lord. This place is COMPLETELY uninteresting to me. Every single store is just male characters and strange mascots. Do yourself a favor and don't waste 600 yen on train fees. Ginza and Ikebukuro have been a major waste of time. I think the only saving grace from my visit thus far was seeing a half Gyaru who was still in the process of molting. She wasn't fully tanned but clearly was trying to get more tan. Plus the sheer amount of cute girls.
Nice view of the city
From another angle
>>2837675It's much easier to have your luggage shipped to your next hotel the day before via Kuroneko Yamato or Sagawa Express. For example, if you're staying in Tokyo one night and moving to a hotel in Osaka the next day, just arrange it at the Tokyo hotel front desk, and your luggage will arrive at the Osaka hotel the following day. Please read the OP's "Hands Free Travel service"
>>2837679I know about that, am just used to dropping it off personally. I’ll try it out, eventually

I'm going to Tokyo next week, and the only "jacket" I have is a hoodie from Uniqlo. Should I buy something like a fleece jacket? I saw it's getting colder.I'm from Southeast Asia so this 5-15 degree celcius temperature is uncharted territory for me.
>>2837730it's getting colder, there's an autumn chill now
>>2837730Hoodie is probably OK during the daytime, especially if you're piling on layers. In the afternoon though you're going to want something more substantial
>>2837730A thin hoodie might not be warm enough. If it's cold when you arrive, you can buy a jacket at a clothing store near the airport. The staff are used to customers like you and will be able to advise you on suitable clothing.
>>2837730You really don't want to come here unprepared rn. Last night it went down to almost 12°C here in Tokyo. I had to go back to my hotel and grab a second jacket
So I'd assumed a fleece jacket is better than a hoodie?
How do i into steak in japan last time i went i saw all the signboards selling it by the gram and was confused and just didnt try any. And i dont mean the fancy reservation wagyu places, just random walk in restaurants i saw

Like rare, medium, etc... mashed potatoes and other sides etc... or is it different?
I'm a single man who wants to visit from Boston. I'm fine with staying in hostels or capsule hotels, and I want to get the JR pass to travel by train to different cities. Putting plane tickets aside, how much money would I probably end up spending? I would mostly be going to historic sites and nature parks. But primarily I want to see >Tokyo>Kyoto>Okinawa
>>2837769hostel/capsule tier accommodation ¥5000reasonable food ¥3000transportation ¥1000 (depending on itinerary ofc.)so the daily cost of existence is $60

>>2837695>>2837784Koyasudori in Yokohama. It's one of the few oldschool ungentrified wharfs left. I'll go there in a couple weeks and post photos in this thread. If that's not enough, then Yamashita Pier in Yokohama or the ports near the International Cruise Ship Terminal in Tokyo I guess.>>2837769I'm also from Boston. Fly to LA first and take a ZIPAIR flight to Tokyo from there. The JR pass isn't worth it in 2025. Take a night bus from Tokyo to Osaka and then take a local train to Kyoto if money is a concern. I wouldn't really recommend hostels, capsule hotels, or Okinawa (for your first trip). Try to focus on a general golden route itinerary first and then combine Okinawa with Kyushu, Taiwan, or Guangdong/Hong Kong for a separate trip.
>>2837791>>2837769Masshole here as well; you don't take the jal direct from logan to narita? Its what i took last time, and already have tickets for next time.Cuts out all the layover delay liability and shenanigans, and gives you more time to be in japan proper rather than sitting in airports
>>2837784maybe he means like that pirate looking boat in Hakone
>>2837797Direct flights are boring and expensive as fuck. First time I went to Tokyo, I had a layover in Hong Kong and walked around the city. 2nd time I went, I had a layover in Seattle and did the same. It's like eating an appetizer before the full-course meal. >pic semi-related
>>2837806Ah, quite interesting, when you put it that way I see what you mean. I always just really hated the whole airport rigamarole, so would try to spend as little time in airports as possible, also tighter layovers are a major liability for missed connections in the event of delays. But if you're actually wherever for long enough to hop out and explore, that's pretty cool. I had been on Tokyo layovers multiple times a decade before I had even actually gone to japan for a trip and stepped out of the airport. Similarly with Taipei, except I've never actually been outside of the airport, and would like to visit Taiwan someday.I'll keep what you said in mind for the future, I already booked tickets for my trip, but maybe my next trip I could do a 2-3day layover somewhere interesting on the way.
Anyone experienced and knowledgeable about Hokkaido? I'm planning on spending say 3 nights there (the last 3 days of the snow festival; can't really go much earlier, landing in tokyo late, hit an izakaya, walk around, go to bed, spend two days recovering from jetlag and very relaxedly hitting up some old favorites (Yushukan, Nakano Broadway, Akihabara), then the next morning hopping on a plane (rather than train) to sapporo per some research after >>2837599's recommendation. I should be on Hokkaido by Monday afternoon on Feb9This is where the bulk of my questions lay; My vague idea right now is land at the Sapporo airport and rent a car. How snowy/icy does it get in hokkaido in feburary? I live in a snowy/icy area, but I also drive a truck, a brief look at the https://rent.toyota.co.jp/ site for sapporo did not show any tacomas which is what I would have picked if I needed a toyota for a snowy/icy area (don't own one myself, but many friends/coworkers do and swear by it, and I've driven em before). Are the roads pretty clean and maintained and I should be fine with whatever? (cheapest option probably)Or if not, I don't know a damn thing about non pickup toyotas, what would (You) pick based on their available roster that would be safe for the road conditions in Hokkaido in Feburary? And as far as lodging is concerned, my general idea is to stay somewhere both "near a subway station" and "on the outskirts of the city" so I can easily hop on a subway and go into the city, OR drive out into the countryside to see nature stuff, and overall not having to deal with deep urban heavy traffic and tight lanes etc... Does such a place exist? Or am I being too picky? I could 100% buy either the "fuck renting a car, just stay in the city and take trains and busses/ubers" or "fuck the city, stay in this bumfuck town, and drive everywhere, here's a cool trick for free parking near a station if you really need to go" argument with supporting anecdotes
>>2837715Couldn't reply because my esim is IP blocked but here you go.Looks like vomit, tastes great.
>>2837791I’m curious, what makes the JR ticket not worth it? Also, hostels and such are just to keep costs down, which I did in Germany quite well, so what would the trade off be?
>>2837142i'm from New Orleans. it's super hot and super humid here, like truly miserable during the summer. i was in Tokyo from 9/15 to 9/30 and i was fucking dying man. i'm not fat, and luckily no bad BO because i was sweating my ass off. i had a rag on me at all times, lmao. basically, i don't regret it, but it was insane at times. you might finally get inside somewhere you can hang around for a bit and it's hot in there too. be prepared and stay hydrated, lmao.
>>2837845Not that anon, but around 2 years ago the general JR pass had ~70% price hike. Before then it was very worth it, but after, unless you're hoping on a shinkansen every day, you're not saving money. What IS still worth it depending on your itinerary are regional JR passes. Typically, you can run your trip through a calculator like https://www.japan-guide.com/railpass/ and see which regional pass works out best for you.

>>2837615Even Japanese people get confused about whether express trains on private urban railways charge extra fees or not. The bewilderment felt by Japanese people moving from rural areas to the city is likely no different from that of foreign tourists. Generally, commuter-type express trains with bench seating are free, while express trains with cross-seating and specially finished exteriors require an extra fee. Note that the Keio Line does not operate any express trains requiring an extra fee.

Once upon a time, even in the countryside, the station was the town center, bustling with shops, restaurants, bowling alleys, movie theaters, and other entertainment facilities clustered together. But now, it has completely fallen into decline.
I'm a very picky eater and one of my greatest pains here in Japan has been the restaurant hunting. I've basically been living on fried chicken, hamburgers and steak for the whole duration of my stay. I envy those who can just enter any restaurant and leave with a clean plate. I've tried ramen, unagi, yakidango, miso, nothing is clicking for me. Even their rice comes without salt. It's awful.
>>2837987>thisreminds me of my first time in japan, especially first day jetlag waking up early, was such a surreal feeling with how empty things feel. What I ended up doing was just going to tokyo station, walking around a bit outside the imperial palace area (too early to go deeper inside) and then checking out some nearby underground gallery thing, before finally sitting down at some coffee shop at the station and then watching the absolute oceans of suits crossing the roads and going into and out of the station. But like the other guy said; you just gotta adjust your schedule. And if you're generally an "early riser", try to set up your travel first thing in the morning, so by the time you get where you're going after a couple trains, things will be open.
>>2838004Where you gettin steak? like it it the American style big slab of beef with some potatoes on the side? or is it the thing where they slice it and cook it on the big metal table in front of you. Also are you in Japan for work or something and struggling to find things to eat? Or you just decided for some reason to go on vacation to a country with food you don't like. I remember hanging out for a day with this irish couple in tokyo, girl would not eat anything but mcdonalds, it was very strange, dude was also very frustrated with it but just rolling with it.
>>2838004Japanese/Chinese rice is bomb tastelet
>>2838007I actually was very excited for Japanese food, it all looked a lot more appetizing than it really is. Everything seems to lack condiments, even their french fries don't have much salt in them. Plus everywhere you go, there's this nauseatingly sweet smell in the air. I acknowledge fully that I'm a picky eater but I think it isn't unreasonable to say that the Japanese don't go too crazy with their food. Hamburgers for example really could use having some form of cheese filling by default. Miso soup does not need to come with every meal, and the rice, at least give me a salt packet...
>>2838013What the hell, their french fries are too salty. Where are you from to need mountains of salt in everything.
>>2838015Well, I ate fries in Kawaguchiko, haven't had them yet in Tokyo so who knows.
What kinda bags yall carry when you're out and about in Japan? Last time i went i used some sling bag which worked but was generally uncomfortable to wear out and about all day. All i really need to carry around on a regular basis is passport, powerbank, some tissues and cash. I prefer to not lug around a backpack and have to swap it back/front to not knock over shit in stores, or bump into people on the subway. These "chest bag" things ive seen in stores and online seem like they fit the bill, but i think they would also look incredibly cringe to be wearing out and about in public, dont wanna look like a mallninja weirdo, is there some less conspicious but functionally similar kind of small comfortable all day wear bag for a small handful of essentials?
>>2838028Just wear it but with a jacket over. Take it off for photo time if it bothers you that much
>>2838028I carried a small fanny pack across my shoulder. It fit everything I needed: passport, tissues, pocket change for gacha/claw/vending machines and sometimes my wallet or phone. Found the exterior pocket to be very useful too to put the train tickets inside. Probably about the same size of whatever that is in your pic but less cringe until I hanged some keychains I got there. But to be honest, who cares? Its not like they are going to specifically remember amongst the other cringe gaijin.
>>2838013Rice is a neutralizer, pleb. You’re supposed to eat it with something savory, oily and salty so it soaks up those flavors so it doesn’t overpower you. You are not nip at all to enjoy rice balls alone don’t force it.

Anything special about ryokan in Hakone? I was considering just kind of quickly passing through, if anything I was thinking about staying the night at Nikko.
>>2838053Hakone is mainly popular because it's close to Tokyo. There's better options if you're willing to travel further.
>>2837833Taiwan is underrated. It's affordable, it's mostly ignored by tourist hordes, and it genuinely feels as if time stopped there 30 years ago in some areas. Go sooner rather than later given the fact that there's still ongoing regional tension.>>2837845The other anon >>2837847 summarized it. The post-2023 cost increases made the pass obsolete. There's almost no realistic scenario where the pass would pay itself off now. As for hostels, I just don't like them. Granted, current hotel prices are obscene, but the trade off is that you get sleep, actual privacy, and a nice view from your window if you choose the right one.
>staying near tokyo or shinjuku stationis this an insane idea? It'd only be for three nights, and mostly because of wanting to catch the narita express for a flight. >>2837842 a few days after landing and getting my bearings. And I see hotels near either of those stations for my dates in mind, and both those stations are on the narita express line, so will make it an easy morning to just get up early, head to the airport and be in hokkaido by noon-ishThat said, I've been to tokyo and shinjuku stations and they're absolute mayhem and I didn't really go to them more than necessary. If you're thinking of staying near Tokyo Station or Shinjuku Station because it's difficult to carry your luggage to these stations where the Skyniner stops, you can simply send your luggage ahead to a Kuroneko Yamato or Sagawa Express office at Narita Airport. That way, you can travel light to Tokyo Station or Shinjuku Station from anywhere in Tokyo.

He is right about the fries from slop chains, they barely have salt, which I guess is healthier, but doesn't make them very appealing. This is why I always pick salad instead if available. From the slop burger chains in Japan I can only recommend1.Zetteria Okonomiyaki burger 2.Lotteria Avocado shrimp3.McDonalds Teriyaki chickenI had high hopes for Mos burger but it's just mcdonalds meat with more tomatoes so nothing remarkable and Carls jrs tastes exactly the same as the ones back home.

Anyone have been to tottori? Im on the fence if I should include it in my plan, mainly for sand dunes/some hike, but I was wondering if it offers anything beside well know locations (that is, typical castle ruins + garden). Also is miyama (kita) worth the visit? I dig that is seem picturesque but are there any closeby forest trails? (Train/busfaq here so no car unfortunetly).Beside that, anyone can recommend 2-2,5h nature hike (temples or ruined castles is a plus) from osaka station?Today i was in amanohashidate and it was a blast, i feed eagles, biked through sandbar, hiked up the Nariaiji temple and had good ramen before a return train.

>>2838263The reliability of Japan's distribution industry is assured. You can track your package's current location via smartphone. >>2838269It also won't get rejected since it based on a Japanese bank account. You just convert to yen in the settings and no ATM will ask you to do any stupid conversions. You can save on withdrawls that you can then use to load your suica or paypay or whatever on 7-11 ATMs.

>>2838159lol no, paki-japan friendship is stronger than rajeet
>>2837375Brother, what are your hobbies? What do you do in your free time? Language is irrelevant you just need to be a constant factor in a specific environment to socialize. This might be the live house in your area that hosts bands you like. Will certainly lead to meeting other regulars because they like a shirt you wear or whatever. Or it might be going surfing or bouldering at the same place regularly. Might do some small talk about technique or the weather with people around. I could go on but you get the gist. The answer is the same as it would be where you are originally from. Everything else is just in your head. Think about your home country and ignore this whole "Japanese are like this and that" for a second. Do you like your friends because they are fluent in Inglés or because they are friendly and helpful? And when you meet the new guy at work and his shitty English is incomprehensible, do you care when he does a fine job and picks up your slack? I will not allow you to wallow in self pity for months and forever regret your inaction. Learning nippy is for the memes and the laughs and trying to explain to your lawyer that "Hanako took the kids! I thought we were just going to see her parents but she left with them and I have no rights in this country!"
Whats the deal with hotsprings and onsens? Do most japanese not have tubs at home? Even the cheapest business hotels ive stayed in have tubs, and you got privacy and can just sit there smoking cigarettes and drinking kombini whiskey as long as you want and im pretty sure they don't allow that at the official placesOr is it just a cultural or traditional thing? To me the concept on the whole is somewhat baffling. Why do the whole public pool/locker room experience to just sit in hot water with a bunch of other dudes? Ive done something similar in the us (roosevelt baths) but really only because my gf at the time wanted to do it, an it all just felt like kind of a waste of time and money considering i could just sit in the tub at home

I been thinking of doing a 12 or 14 day trip to Japan hopefully next year. The idea is to go from Tokyo to Kyoto then Osaka and then back to Tokyo, travel wise I’ll probably get a JR pass but stay wise I’m probably just gonna just reserve hotel in Kyoto and just look for every else on the fly or should I look into booking every hotel before I get to a city?
>>2838305Jr pass is no longer worth it, just buy tickets or cheaper yet; fly domestic.Id say book everything asap, more options, and better rates. You can figure something out on the fly, but it aint gonna be cheap, and you're going to have a lot less options

>>2838274This type of backpack is the most common in Japan.
>>2838377Why are you so fixated on Tokyo?
>>2838385Know stuff around tokyo from previous trip, also need to depart from tokyo, know how easy it is to daytrip to things from tokyo (e.g. saw the nikko shrine festival last time I went, as a daytrip from tokyo) first 6 days of my trip are already booked (hokkaido). have 9 more days/nights, Trying to decide between spending it all in Tokyo and daytripping to the countryside and metro area to hit up old favorites, or places I didn't get around to last time; OR spending some portion of that remaining time to check out Kyoto and Osaka nightlife, which seemed pretty appealing from assorted youtubes, but on the flipside it's gonna be mid-late feb, and I see some say it'll be really fairly dead in winter, in which case; for lack of the ambiance etc... could be nice fore not having to deal with massive wait times or crowds, but I'm still not really sure.Either way I'll need to get back to tokyo for the last leg of my trip for the sake of ease of transit to the airport, but the real question is if I should spend a couple nights in kyoto or osaka in mid feburary before I go to back to tokyo to relax for a ~week before heading home.
This costs 600yen in kanazawa lmao
>>2838302I stayed in Tavinos hotel Hamamatsucho, insanely well located hotel for great price (I paid 90$ per day!). There's a family mart at the base of the hotel, a station right in front of it by walking across the street, they have free breakfast services, and it's in Minato, one station away from Shimbashi which connects to every major station in the city. It's also a 10 minute walk from Tokyo tower. Plus if you go the other way in the train, it's a direct route to Odaiba. I would absolutely take this hotel every time I visit.Highlights? Shibuya sky was worth it for sure, Odaiba had some cool stuff but I'd avoid the Miraikan, it's mostly for children. Visit Tokyo tower and Zojoji at night (also during day obviously), at night it becomes quite pretty and serene. Daytrips from Tokyo, Enoshima and Kawaguchiko incredibly worth it. Don't miss it. Yokohama was cool, Kamakura was underwhelming as fuck.Regrets, I'd say climbing Sky tower. The view isn't terrible but compared to other options it's not worth. Asakusa as a whole is horribly crowded, and the Zojoji especially so, best to just visit Sumida. Tokyo Palace East garden was kind of meh, but it's chill at least, and it's free to up to you if you want to visit.
>>2838395The temple in Asakusa is named Senso-Ji*, I meant to say that one was overcrowded. Don't skip on Zojo-ji

>>2838396I'm thinking of going at night. You figure I'll have the same problem?
>>2838292Actually, summer is when you'll be worn out by the muggy heat.
>>2838400Afaia, most shops on the street leading to the temple, and the temple ground itself, closes at 5PM, but if you're going purely to visit the temple's exterior at a more tranquil time, you'll probably see fewer crowds at night. It's a pretty temple though I would not ever visit Asakusa a second time
>>2838028I have a simple shoulder bag big enough for a wallet, phone, keys/lanyard, and a front pocket for wet-wipes or cool wipes (essential during the summer) and gum. Not very big at all. I see lots of Japanese people wearing similar sized bags. I would advise against chest bags A) because they look cringe and B) because you're going to sweat so fucking bad in warmer months it's not even funny.

Theres a mountain (290m) that you can trek (easy yet rewarding + save ~600y) or go via roperail with castle ruins and small yet beautiful temple that have amazing view on city and lake biwa.Theres also cake factory park that have tasty fresh cakes around, its 2km from the roperail lower station. >>2838510>>2838371You seem to know the area, if i was lookin to spend 3ish days in osaka, what area would you reccomend for open late foreigner friendly nightlife? When i say foreigner friendly i dont mean hub or takeshita tier tourist trap, i more mean a larger amount of places with english and/or pictures on the menu
>>2838531Btw i ended up bookin a city view room at Hotel Crown Hills Ueno Premier (BBH Hotel Group)Location seems very convenient for access to skyliner, standard subway, and walking distance from aki if im out at some izakaya past the trains shutting down
>>2838533Sounds great! Glad I could help :)
>>2838535Yeah thanks man, skyliner/ueno was incredibly useful info to look into, and i think im getting a much better deal cost and convenience-wise than some of the weirder shit i was brainstorming at the beginning (like taking the nex and staying at the tokyo station hotel, or shinjuku, or in aki)
>>2838491At the very least go to the Omicho Market where you can at some local foods. If you like fish and willing to pay a little more than usual, I do recommend getting some nodoguro. Personally I went to a place called Nodoguro Itaru (https://nodoguro-itaru.com/) but there should be several other places you can find through google.
I was at the US consulate (mcd), how does a soda cost more than fries?
Anyone ever stay in ikebukuro? What's it like? Ive only ever been there during daytime. Trying to pick a place to stay in tokyo for approximately a week. Want somewhere with local nightlife after the subways close. Places i don't want to stay; aki/ueno/shinjuku/tokyo center either because ive already stayed in those areas, or other reasons (e.g. despite having good nightlife, shinjuku station is the tenth circle of hell as far as im concerned with the crowds and confusing navigation). Mainly looking at ikebukuro and shibuya, because while not having stayed there, i remember them fondly. Any other regions worth considering?
>>2838558Yep, stayed north of the station on the west side.I'm not one for drinking, dancing, sex or what have ye, but there were plenty of spots for them, and girls advertising in their puffy white fur boots. I like ikebukoro because its a transit hub and has everything all densely packed minus the crowds.Picrel is me getting lost trying to find a ramen place located somewhere above street level. The ramen sucked but experience finding it was good.
>>2838578Sounds pretty good, thats kinda what i was hoping for, major hub without the chaos of tokyo or shinjuku stations, and with things to do nearby later at night. You check out the nearby chinatown at all? Just learned about it and it actually has me a bit more interested because while absolutely not fluent, i speak one hell of a lot more chinese than the handful of japanese phrases i know, and that way i could actually chat with some locals.Last time 99% of the people i spoke with beyond transactions was european tourists, and only one japanese guy at a bus stop in sendai who walked up to me and wanted to test his english because he saw a white guy
Entered in one of those machines stores out of curiosity. The screaming light and sounds reflecting on the hunched figures with dead eyes is greater degeneracy then any anime titty
>>2838587Pachinko stores.
>>2838587I never played pachinko, but ive sure been in a lot of pachinko parlors, they're actually very convenient stops to use the bathroom, sit and relax for a bit, have a drink or have a smoke. I think their air purification is also pretty damn good, not quite vegas level, but so much better than the stank in a lot of "smoking rooms" in malls and offices that is nasty to even smokers
Gonna try to go to bnuy island guys :)
>>2838395>OdaibaI found Odaiba incredibly underwhelming when I went there in 2019. The ride over on that rubber wheel train or whatever was pretty fun with all the views of the interesting looking buildings. Then I went to the Miraikan, which as you said, is mostly for children; a fact I was not aware of when I entered, but quite aware of when I left. It wasn't bad per se, when I left I thought it was pretty cool, took pictures of the statue of liberty, grabbed a gin and tonic at some swanky little cafe, then I checked out that giant mall behind the gundam, and sure enough, it was a giant mall, don't know what I was expecting, think I had some udon at the food court. Left the mall, took some pictures of the giant gundam, kinda wanted to check out the gundam store/cafe/whatever but there was a long ass line and I'm not even a huge gundam fan, and it had been a moderately entertaining but overall mediocre day and I'd almost say a wasted day, and I wanted to get back downtown proper and start barhopping.>Sky toweroh yeah, I never tried that. as far as tower things for views, I think Sunshine 60 was fuckin awesome, the day I was there the weather was just perfect and clear. The shinjuku govt building free observation deck was... Idk if it is better during the daytime, but when I was there the way the lights were, and how dirty the glass was (that the light was reflecting off of), it was a pretty mid view in person, and impossible to take any nice pictures at>Tavinos hotel Hamamatsuchodang this looks like a nice place from what I saw on their site, unfortunately not available of the timeslot I'm looking at. would you recommend hamamatsucho in general as a base of operations? Other than transit accessibility, does the area have good nightlife? a distinct vibe? unique amenities?
>>2838558Ikebukuro is nice. It doesnt have AS much as shinjuku, however its pretty nerdy and is in a good location to take you to the other parts of Tokyo. Runs cheaper than staying in Shibuya, but also I have only been to shibuya once.
>>2838548I'm allergic to seafood, otherwise I would've
>>2838306Not true. I was doing a roadtrip with frens last May and we always booked cheap accommodation a few hours before arrival. And by cheap I mean 20-40$ for a person, usually shared tatami room or separate motel rooms

>>2838624食べるのもいい。
>>2838617Okunoshima or some other rabbit island? Ive been there 2y ago, there is a nice panorama up the top and bunnies are cute. Gajin hint (filthly) nara sika deers love rabbit food (dont give em much tho), they will adore you if you give them some.>>2838532I roll in sonezaki and east part of umeda but thats mostly because i tend to spend whole day on trips and dont have that much energy for drinking/party in late at night. Those are close to my accomodation so its more a conviniance for me and my gf.
>>2838286Even if it's no problem for you, it's an extreme nuisance for us.
>>2838629I was trying to look for food, I think it was at the visitor center. I’ll try to get some when I get back. I like the history aspect of the island being a gas test site
>>2838630There were a group of 3 fat American fucks carrying their 120 liters luggage and anime crap on Osaka rush hour the other day
I actually pulled a japanese woman last night..my trip is now 100% sucess
Not a lot of bunnies up the trail
>>2838631I wanted to go there today, but im currently on kansai wode pass vs rail pass 2y ago. Gas weapon testsite is kawaii, so is gun bateries inplacements that are scared yhrought the island. Dunno if you wnet throught tadanoumi, but the most funny thing to me was that most trains arrives at 59 of each hour and the ferry is 00, so you cant make it in time and have to stay 1h - I think its just to leave some money to the locals.
>>2838617You on that rabbit island that also has a poison gas museum?
Feeding the deer in Nara anything other than deer crackers is strictly prohibited. Feeding them other foods can cause tooth decay, nutritional imbalances leading to illness, and teaches them to recognize the taste of vegetables, causing them to damage fields. Furthermore, even feeding them deer crackers outside of Nara Park is strictly prohibited. This is because the deer learn they can receive food outside the park, leading to traffic accidents. Additionally, the proceeds from deer cracker sales are used for deer conservation.

>>2838654What, do you melt in rain?
This was a pretty and quaint visit, lot of cute bunnies>>2838642The historical sites were really cool to see, you can walk in some of the ruins too. I took the ferry from Mihara, the one you mentioned had one coming at 8am with the next one coming way later for some reason>>2838643Yup
In the countryside, the station area was the town center, foreigners were a rare sight, and children were friendly.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KuMVCEEm6rI
>>2838654Fly home sadly>>2838532Im not that first anon, but I'd say the whole area of namba, long the river and the bit above it are good for that. There are a lot of tourists, but there are also so damn many bars and restaurants that they can't all be tourist traps thankfully. North side you will get bothered by Chinese aunties asking you if you want a massage in the most annoying NPC dialog way ever, but oh well.the whole area is fun to just wander around so you don't need to care too much if your hotel is close to the action I would say, better to stay somewhere that is easier to reach on check in/out day.>>2838638Congrats, and fuck you. My trip is only 80% successful I suppose. Unsurprisingly going to the other side of the planet still doesn't magically make me have any social skills or whatever it you want to call it.
Pro tip: don't stay in Kanazawa for more than a day. Nothingburger city
>>2838686Good advice.Same cant be said for onomichi. Small town, big things to do.
>>2838687I'm pretty mad. Everyone told me Kanazawa needed two days at least, some even said 3. I slept all day yesterday and felt like shit thinking I wasted a day of sightseeing, and then comes next day, castle, konraku-en, geisha district, samurai district, done before 3PM. "What else is there to do in this city?" "Uuuuuuuhhhhhhhhh"
>>2838638>>2838683I'm curious about meeting a Japanese woman. I'm going Monday (Boston area guy from earlier in the thread) for the history, nature and to see another culture, and I won't be disappointed if it doesn't happen, but what tips do you have about meeting women?
>>2838693>tips do you have about meeting women?you don’t
>>2838694Yeah, I haven't been planning for it. Since everything I've read tells me it's no dice if you aren't fluent in Japanese, and even then it's a longshot. Figured I'd at least ask since some people have pulled it off.
>>2838696She actually just left but uh...I know this is going to sound weird but I brought trade joes stuff and snacks and it was a good conversation starter...plus I bought them a few drinks at the bar for some reason that really made them happy.
>>2838696Well if you want to try something, you can use bumble. I’ve been using it and been getting a surprising amount of matches. Didn’t meet with one yet though disclaimer
>>2838698I already switched my location on Hinge to Tokyo, and I already have Bumble. Wondering if I should rearrange my photos to adjust to the new market. >>2838697Neato. I was planning on doing Karaoke in Osaka too (mainly to sing since I doubt I can have a long bar conversation with google translate.) but I was hoping to buy drinks there
>>2838699>Hinge It works in Japan? How is it so far with it?
We dropped our luggage in a locker in Nagoya station. Didn't remember which one it was. Took 30 mins to find it, only due to a nice japanese lady who lived in the UK for a while. She was so helpful. As a brit, I felt guilty for wasting her time even though she approached us.
>>2838697Interesting, I've been to this bar a few times and before closing they suddenly pulled out trader Joe stuff as well, they got from a regular that is in the country a lot apparently.Gotta find out what stuff from my country is interesting to them for next time.Sadly only girls I can buy drinks here are the ones behind the bar, and although they are very cute, I doubt it would have a similar effect.Pic unrelated but i liked the art.
>>2838700A girl just liked me but that’s about it. I won’t be in Japan for another two days

Ended up grabbing a room with a view near Ueno, it's not a new area like i wanted, but one i already know will work. Considering going to Tokyo in mid-late March, do the temps really fluctuate as much as the historical reports show? I can't stand the cold at all, I'll die if it actually goes to 5c or below in the middle of the day.
>>2838712I've stayed there, it's nice.
Are there still tachinbos at Izumi no Hiroba Plaza in the Umeda underground district?
>>2838718This year, there was one day when it snowed and the daytime temperature dropped to 5 degrees Celsius.https://www.accuweather.com/en/jp/tokyo/226396/march-weather/226396
>>2838726No fucking way it snowed in March>it's trueExplains the 1c on the 19th I guess, gotta rethink my plans. Plane tickets are already getting expensive too, fuck this gay earth.
>>2838731>Plane tickets are already getting expensive too, fuck this gay earth.I already bought a one way ticket in May for $500 but I am waiting to buy my return ticket because August tickets are around $1300. I pray to christ the price drops or something.
I've only got a basic ass Maestro debit card and my bank won't give me a safe limit if I were to ask them for a credit card.I've seen stuff like Revolut and Wise be shilled, do they cover the stuff I'd need a credit card for or should I try to just somehow get an actual (and worthwhile) one in other ways?
>>2838734I've been using my Wise card to pay for literally everything that doesn't require an IC card. It's pretty great. Only downside is that it is a debit card, but you should not be passing things on credit while on a trip anyway.
>>2838735I mean if I can get by with debit I will, but seems at least shit like a ryokan might have me need to bust out a CC.
>>2838735>>2838734Speakin of which, whats the money situation in japan now? Last time i was there it was all cash, but i hear that's changed post covid. I was just going to order a travel card from my bank instead of loading up on cash at 7/11 atms. Is this the way to go? Or should i be looking into some kind of specific thing like wise or ic or whatever yall are talking about
>>2838740Cash is still usable pretty much anywhere in Japan. Might be some exceptions to the rule but when I was there in the summer I did not encounter anywhere that did not take cash.
>>2838740Situations in which only cash was accepted:>Welcome Suica card recharging (regular Suica card does not have this downside)>overpriced icecream scam store in Asakusa ran by an Indian>single instance of a taxi in Tokyo, somehow, only accepting cash>shrine admission fee in YokohamaEverything else accepted IC card or Wise
>>2838744>>2838743Ok, cool, thats good to know, ill just do cash again. Feels like a better idea overall than potential foreign transaction fees. Ill still have a card on hand if i run into some weird cash not accepted situation. How about subway stuff? Whats the best overall option if im gonna be in tokyo, sapporo and osaka? Suica im guessing? Last time i went i did jrpass, but jrpass is a ripoff now, and while i kinda want to keep a card as a souvenir i like the cashout idea with suica. Still not sure if i wanna be putting lots of cash in suica tho, i get you can use it at a lot of places, but im planning on spending most my money at bars, izakayas, and smaller (nakano/akihabara back alley) shops. So it'll probabaly be a put 20 bucks in, see how far that takes me, put in another 20 etc... vs dumping 2 grand into it when i land
Does japan post have any pdcs or major stations where i can get some merch? Or go on a tour of a facility or some kind of museum? Stickers, apparel, things like that. May seem like a strange thing to want, but im a mailman myself. I know some of our (usps) bigger plants have gift shops.
>>2838734yeah we all used revolut there, you can set up a yen wallet and make it spend from there exclusively the physical card takes a while to arrive, but you can just use the app and it can make you single use digital cards as well
>>2838744That's not my experience at all, a fuck ton of places take cash only.I only trust something to take card when it's a chain store or directed almost exclusively at tourists
>>2838706Trader joes is apparently popular in japan...when I came i actually packed a suitcase filled with american snacks and trader joes stuff and canvas bags. The first girl I gave it to almost had a heart attack because it was the halloween variant. Alot of people especially bar guys became super friendly was even offering free drinks. Probably helped that I tipped too which every time got a shocked reaction when I did it...one bar even tweeted about me haha.
>>2838471The broccoli shrimp is the best I had
>>2838801I heard Japan is very stringent about what you can and cannot bring in wrt food. Can I bring stuff from Trader Joe's America? Or are there any in Japan.
>>2838809You can bring processed foods so like cookies, potato chips and pop tarts. You cant bring like produce like tomatoes or apples. There aren't any trader joes in japan but apparently its canvas bags are popular so I brought like 4 of them and filled it with trader joes snacks and seasonings.
>>2838784Sounds nice but is it also any good for booking random lodgings?
>>2838814Any particular snacks I should bring?
Would it be a bad idea to wait until I'm in Japan to book a hire car or should I be booking it well in advance? Hoping to hire a car for a couple of day trips but I'm waiting to see what the weather will be like, especially for a day-trip to Mt Fuji because I want the weather to be clear. Do you think I'll have any trouble with availability? Will be there from late Nov to late Dec
>>2838819I tried to bring things that wasn't available in japan.. poptartats, takis, special edition oreos and most stuff oreos, anything with peanut butter in it, gold fish, and dill pickle things...when ever I showed what I had they pretty much went for the pumpkin spice things too. With the trader joe things I brought everything bagel seasoning and what ever looked good.
I swear I'm on some kind of monkey paw shit since I moved in to Tokyo.First I meet a girl and we get along really well, but she gives me push and pull signs so constantly it's tiring. She invites me, but refuses when I invite her, gives me signs then acts cold as fuck after.Since I'm a retard and feeling alone, I was thinking of contacting the girl I was with last year. Fast forward to yesterday night, I go into a bar, and run into this very girl, who was surprised but really happy to see me. What were the fucking odds I would run into her, in a city of 12M people. Like, what the fuck. And since I'm a huge FUCKING RETARD, I simply chitchatted a little with her, went to find a place, and an hour later she left after saying me goodbye.I really need to pull my fingers out of my ass and go talk to people, even if they're talking in groups. And I'm definitely contacting her again, hoping she'll accept. But yeah, fuck you monkey paw.
Where can i buy chopsticks online from japan, shipped overseas?Just thinking about christmas presents, are chopsticks a good thing to give or are they like harry potter wands, where the owner needs to chose it themselves and the sticks choose them.
>>2837577Groping on the street? And you've witnessed it multiple times? Sure, if it's a dispute on a packed train like "He touched my butt" vs. "No, I didn't," that's one thing. But the situation you describe is a serious crime called indecent assault, and the police would take it seriously and investigate. Japan's public safety hasn't deteriorated that much. Or... are you perhaps commenting after watching some staged AV?
>>2838831You can buy anything from any online store with a proxy.
>>2838712>>2838720Even if it's not a capsule hotel, any hotel in Nishinari costing 2,800 yen or more should be hygienically fine.
>>2838822Keep your itinerary flexible because there's only 90 days of the year in which Mt Fuji is visible, so when the weather clears you'll need to floor it.
Stupid fucking retard I was with rushed to the shinkansen and left their bag where they bought the tickets for the train, so now they've been left behind since they went to run after it and the shinkansen left. I'm so done with taking normies with me on my trips>>2838835
>>2838829You will get her anon I believe in you.
When traveling to Japan, it's a good idea to transit through Incheon Airport in Seoul. Flights are often cheaper than direct flights to Japan, and there are many free tours available for transit passengers. Furthermore, numerous direct flights connect Incheon Airport to city airports across Japan, including regional airports, making Incheon a hub for these destinations.
Is the JP pass worth it if I’m doing Tokyo-Nagoya-Kyoto-Osaka—Hiroshima—Fukuoka—Nagasaki within two and a half weeks?
>>2838844>is JP pass wor-No. Unless you're going from Fukuoka to cape Soya and back twice, that shit is worthless now.
>>2838842Thank you, I want to believe too.
The rain is out a bit, but decided to take a trip around mt shinnyu today. Nice, cool and fresh
>>2838654>rainI just sleept late and got into train to wakayama, i didnt want to stay at osaka for sunday crowds in shoppingmall while it rains. Ill probably just visit castle, park and eat some curry.

Staying in Nihonbashi this week, any tips or advice?
>>2838654Last year i just happened to go to tokyo tower during the rain. It was great. Good visbility still, no crowds, a floor with speakers blasting the outside audio of wind.I will go again next year if it rains.Otherwise, nakano broadway.
>Taking the chuo line and ending up out of japan. Why does it go so far out of tokyo?
>>2838865There are plenty of luggage storage facilities around Kyoto Station, and some even offer delivery services to your hotel.
>>2838852Nice and quaint walk, though I need to do something for another 2.5 hours for my bus to get here. I’m cold and wet, and cold
>>2838870Nihonbashi is an office district, so it has plenty of lunch spots with reasonable prices. Avoid the 12:00 to 1:00 PM rush hour when it gets crowded with office workers on their lunch break. As a business district dating back to the Edo period, it's interesting to explore the back streets where you'll find small shrines dedicated to Fushimi Inari—branch shrines established by merchants wishing for prosperous business.

Currently on a maid Cafe. Not to sound like a creep, but highschoolers doing it is much cuter than women nearing 30 acting overly hyper, and I say this as a hag lover
>>2838893Maid cafes just don't work. It's much better to just admire the JKs and below walking around after 5PM
>>2838895What are the appeal of these cafes anyway? Just a classier Hooter's?
>>2838878Nice anon, it was to wet for me (my camera isnt weatherproof) so l picked wakayama and I dont regret it. It stopped raining when I went there and had to go by foot from the station because I didnt want to wait 20min for local train and bus was 23min late. In the end I saw castle and garden. Everything was so humid and it was perfect fit for a overgrown castle which rests on the greenstone substructure. There was a traditional japanese drum band and dancers that were training on the castle grounds so I had a nice background soundtrack that echoed in the castle park. The garden was very small but it looked splendid with this aura.I wanted to eat some curry but I arrived at the handpicked curry joint 16,30 and granny-sama informed me that its to late (they were open till 17) so I ate some local gyukatsu (beef tonkatsu) with shroom miso on wakayamashi station, overal 4,5/5 for a half day trip.Pic is from phone, because i didnt upload any camera pics yet.
>>2838896I actually like the aesthetic of the cafe, and I like how cute and detailed the maid outfits are.If they played it straight instead of the moe thing I'd find it pretty fun
>>2838897Sounds awesome. My trip next year has a daytrip to wakayama. You only got half a day out of it? Anything you missed?
I land at Narita on Tuesday at 4 and my hotel is in Nihonbashi. I will have a big suitcase. Are there taxis/"GO" (like UBER) which can take me straight there or would I have to haul it onto the train? I plan on doing luggage shipping for other cities
>>2838900Anon you're going to pay horrors to get a taxi from Narita to Nihonbashi. Just get the train, super cheap, easy to get, and takes you to major stations
>>2838903It’s just that I’ve heard they hate when you bring suitcases on the train, and it would probably be rush hour.
>>2838906The train I took from Narita was basically empty. And so what, lots of people carry their luggage on train
>>2838897This looks really cool. Something about wet and fresh brings a photo to life desu. Speaking of food, having an eel box at yoshis because didn’t eat anything since morning
>>2838906The Keisei Sky Access Line's Access Limited Express trains run into the subway, so taking one of these will get you to Nihonbashi Station on the subway without transferring. The Skyliner only goes as far as Ueno, making the transfer to Nihonbashi a hassle. The JR Narita Express also requires a transfer to the subway within Tokyo, which is inconvenient. There are also direct limousine buses running from Narita Airport to Nihonbashi.
>>2838899I got there past 14 and boarded train at 18, so it was 6h total with train connections. If it wasnt raining/ If I would do a full day trip then i would add Kimii-dera and bandoko gardens (it would be a stretch if not done early I guess, I like to take my time and enjoy the locations).>>2838912Yeah, especialy with a lush flora, i will do katsuoji-minoh path, but i need to wait a bit for the grounds to dry, because my boots are shit for mud unfortunetly. >>2838906>>2838914Keisei Access Limited Express trains don't require a limited express surcharge, but they use these kinds of cars. Once you board the train, immediately lift up the seats and place your suitcase there. Once you enter Tokyo, it gets crowded and people will take the seats.
>>2838918A nice stroll to a park isn’t so bad either >>2838919I should take more vending machine photos, I like those ones the most
>>2838922We did a nice ~200m high trek to omihachiman castle and temple in favor of taking roperail and i plan hiking daimonji and katsuga primeval forest trek beside the aftermention minho path. I wish I could go for late night walks but the middle front section of my foot is completely fucked up from walking nearly 20km per day. Feels like I'm stepping on a stone each time. Currently in Osaka but have to stay resting in hotel...
>>2838924I kind of just wing it, look at my maps and find a trail that is accessible by train/foot/bus. It’s a little hit or miss, I can get a really fantastic hike like pic related (Akita) or a heavily touristy one like mt. fugen. Later next weekish I’m hoping to hike mt. Iwate, a spot that I missed that I really wanted to check out by MoriokaToday for example was actually pretty nice, I could've walked way more, but buses were my limiting factor (just one bus back home for the whole day), so I just hung around and walked around the roads until I find something cool (I didn't except some deers and strange green goo)
>>2838925Are you me? After walking 22km yesterday I took advantage of the rain today and slept in.By sleep in I mean I left 10am and still did 10km around the malls and stuff, but that's easy walk and I managed to rest a bit

Planning on doing a daytrip from tokyo to fox village via train, is there anywhere worth stopping at on the way back? Keeping in mind this would need to be a short stop since i do need to get back to tokyo. E.g. nikko shrine is technically between tokyo and fox village, ive been there, it's great, but its a full day trip spot. Not a quick stop type spot for the way back unless you're planning on staying the night. I really just am looking for some spot to hop out of the train, grab lunch, take a few pictures and hop back on another train. I guess if there isnt anything i could just go the rest of the way up to sendai, grab some gyutan, hit a few of those covered shopping streets amd then ride back to tokyo; but it would be cool to visit something new on the way back

Wow, Japanese smart cards like Suica will finally be competing with credit cards.>JR East will add a code payment function to its transportation IC card service, Suica, by autumn 2026. It will set a new payment limit of several hundred thousand yen, allowing for large payments, and will also add a money transfer function. Tell me about sushi. Last time i was in japan for 2 weeks in 2019 i only had it at 2 places (if not counting kombini takeaway). 1 was some sit down place in a mall in sendai, had some kind of set meal thing that was great, ate there 2 times, the other was some conveyer belt place where i ordered a "set" off of a menu because i didnt know how the conveyer belt worked and didnt want to make an ass of myself, and then they tell me that what i got is takeaway only and i can't eat it there. It was good in the end and i was only stayin ~10m away. That said, how does conveyor belt places work? I dont wanna be >that gaijin. Also are there any all you can eat type deals? I love that shit stateside, some local joint has 40$ ayce, 10$ cocktails, i do like 60/+ slices of sashimi and other assorted fried things, everytime i go. Place is actually a huge hit with the local blue collar crowd, chinese run, but the fish quality is great, and ive been to much much swankier 4/5$ piece places, and while cuts are much smaller, freshness and selection is absolutely comparable. Is this a thing in japan?

>>2838004People who complain that Japanese rice is bland and tasteless, or that there's no salt provided to flavor it, simply don't understand that the way you eat rice is fundamentally different from how Japanese do.Japanese don't bat an eye when foreign tourists eat ramen or udon with a fork, but they cringe when they see someone pouring onions sauce directly onto rice. Japanese eat by taking small bites of rice and side dishes, chewing them together in their mouths (mouth seasoning). This is a way of eating that Japanese naturally acquire from childhood.
>>2839354I have, like 50km/h route I go five above that. It feels slow and I feel like clogging up traffic, and I also feel like people want to go faster then, which is fine but there’s little to no room to pull over. Maybe it’s the way they drive here, and maybe I’m going ok, but in the States, it’s be faster or die
>>2839355People don’t do this in general? This was always intuitive to me

I'm going to Asakusa tomorrow and I heard about Kappabashi being a meme tourist trap. Is it worth it going there if I just want a basic kitchen knife? Preferably if they can engrave it.My budget is 20000 yen.
Why are there so many muslims at lake seiko?
>>2839367I saw prices between 20000-30000. Some shops will do engraving. For a real basic knife just shop at Donki; Kappabashi knives are all fancy.
>>2839367I bought a few knives there. There's a large price range there depending on the store from cheap mass-produced knives (~5k) to nice handmade ones (20k+), so you'll easily find something within your budget. It's relatively touristy, but that doesn't take away from the quality of the knives and since many store staff speak decent English, they're pretty helpful in finding what you want within a budget. Engravings usually have you come back the next day to pick it up which means taking two trips if that's a deal breaker for you.
Just point to the menu and tell the staff "kore (this)" to order. Plus, many restaurants let you order at automatic ticket machines or using tablets placed at your table. Recently, more places have started letting you order via smartphone.

Trains are super quiet like they are in Japan, you could hear a pin drop. Plus the advantage of fewer tourists crowding sight seeing spots. Night markets are amazing, ordering food is easy, almost everything in Taipei has English translation and there is a 7/11 / family mart on every street corner. Got a story for y'all. As I was in Tokyo last night, I found myself in a cozy, hidden ramen shop. I slid into a seat, my anticipation building with each passing second. The bowl arrived, a steaming masterpiece that could have been a work of art in any gallery. The broth was a rich, amber hue, shimmering with layers of depth and complexity. Each sip was a journey, an explosion of flavors that danced on my tongue. The noodles were al dente, perfectly cooked, and the toppings were sliced beef, soft-boiled egg, and a sprinkle of green onions..With each bite, I felt a surge of vitality, as if the ramen were infusing me with raw, unbridled energy. By the time I reached the bottom of the bowl, I was powered up, my testosterone levels seemingly skyrocketing to 100x their normal levels. I felt invincible, ready to conquer the world.Stepping out of the shop, I was greeted by the bustling streets of Tokyo. My senses were heightened, and everything seemed sharper, more vibrant. And then, in the midst of the crowd, I spotted a group of fat whitoid tourists waddling through the sea of people like a beached whales. Something in me snapped.I saw red. In a flash, I was on them, my fists flying with the precision of a seasoned boxer. The world around us slowed as I unleashed my pent-up energy, each punch a testament to the power of that ramen. The crowd gathered, their eyes wide with a mix of shock and excitement. As I finished a hush fell over the crowd. And then, slowly, the applause began. People cheered, their faces alight with admiration. High fives rained down on me, and in the midst of it all, a cute Japanese girl, her eyes sparkling with gratitude, leaned in and kissed me on the cheek. She also gave me her number and said "Thanks for protecting nippon from whitoid pigs". It was a moment of pure, unadulterated exhilaration, a testament to the power of a good bowl of ramen and the thrill of justice served.

Sometimes I wonder if these shops playing western pop do it because they like it, and it's not for the sake of pandering

>>2839499I'm speaking for myself but 3-5 places per day was a leisurely pace in Tokyo. There's a long list of recommended spots, but I was only really interested in about 12 of them. I was done in three days. I regret not having planned day trips to Kamakura or Lake Kawaguchiko.
In just 3 days I ran out of stuff to do in Osaka, is this normal? I'm going to Himeji and Kobe but I really wish I could spend my time more in Osaka. It's just shopping left to do seemingly.

I did it bros. I conquered my fear of solo dining end went into an intimidating hole in the wall restaurant and asked for whatever the recomend. They gave me the a set with 9 dishes. Only $35. Great food. Now to celebrate I'm going to drink a few high balls and go browse a 24 hour used goods warehouse.
>>2839562Depends where you're going. High traffic areas like Sapporo will be free of snow, but they still have icy footpaths so decent shoes are recommended. You don't need spikes or anything like that, but sturdy hiking shoes are good. When I was in Otaru even the locals were slipping and sliding everywhere

>>2839642The train museum in Omiya obviously. There's a good selection at the book tower next to Akihabara station.
>>2839655My first experience with Yakiniku was in Shinjuku, some place called Rokkasen. Shit was fucking crazy good. It is a bit awkward to grill your own meat, but the meat was worth it. That being said, sometimes I would order some pieces of meat that were way too fatty and that amount of fat made me nauseous the whole day afterwards.
Today I walked around mt. Echizen to get a better view of mt Fuji. I woke up a bit groggy for some reason, but I managed to get out of the bed today. I did get some good shots of Fuji, but at the very peak of this summit, everything got foggy, but I still managed to get some nice pictures of Fuji from a different spot. I circled around the summit to make my way down to a parking lot (awful trail btw almost twisted my ankle) and walk back to my rental, which was an hour away. On the way there, I saw two guys, euros so it seemed, approach me and asked me about the bus times. I had no clue about buses coming through here, so I don’t know what they expected of me, I just told them I dunno bruv gonna get cold soon though. We parted ways and I got to my car. Felt a bit bad leaving them stranded, so I tried looking for them. Couldn’t find them so I assume they made it home safely. The walk itself was pretty typical but the nice sight of Fuji, but aside that nothing extraordinary aside the firing range noises and from what I could guess is a tiger roaring from Fuji safari. 7/10

>>2839655Never tried it in japan, but have tried it in the states. The food was fine and all but i just dont think it's for me, or as fun solo, maybe better with a group, but you just kinda swap between cooking and eating and the cooktime IS fast, but not that fast, so if you're hungry and wanna chow down it isnt great, also you can't really sit back and relax because everything is small and thin, so if you dont pay attention youll burn shitFoods great, but the whole "affair" is pretty inconvenient and not particularly relaxed diningMaybe if you shell out for a table with a dude to cook it for you it's better idk

Suntory Highball my beloved. Japan turns me into an alcoholic. Its just too easy to buy alcohol down that shit in 20 seconds in the local park like a hobo. Where I'm from you cant really buy single serves of alcohol conveniently, and drinking in public is illegal. Here it gets to 11pm and you realize your 6 highball in without any conscious effort.
>>2839674Thanks it was pretty neat. I almost bought a couple of Japanese Switch games. Im looking for pc games though, seems like they are hard to find in Naha. Might need to get some on the mainland. I was hoping to find some gems outside of Tokyo. Like the pc98 games I got in Sapporo on the cheap.
>>2839695A good thing you don't know about the free alcohol you could get. But yeah, gotta be careful too, it's just too easy to drink everything and everywhere in this country. Doesn't help places to socialise heavily involves alcohol too.

How common are automated e-bike rental stands in japan? Is this a viable option for late night transit in the city? You're not about to walk for two hours, but you're too cheap (and don't know how) to call or hail a cab. Driving in Japan is kind of relaxing since everyone drives so slow. 30km/h speed limit in most built up areas. It's kind of nice. I still have no idea what to do about parking though. I went to a beach today and there was a lot that said 'paid parking' but there was no machines or attendant or anything so I didn't park there. No idea where I'm allowed to park, what's private property, etc. Went to Okinawa world today. Was pretty touristy but the caves are amazing and we'll worth the trip. Tomorrow I'll drove around and explore stuff before moving on to Nago tomorrow night. Also someone bake so I can post pics of the cave it was beautiful. I cant bake im phoneposting

>>2840135Nikko is at its peak right now.
>>2840135The peak season for autumn foliage in Yoro Valley, Chiba Prefecture, last year was from late November to early December.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f1cGmu6-sd8
>>2840138Going to Nikko next Tuesday. Got lucky, when I booked the ryokan I expected to get only dead branches, based on youtube videos of previous years
>>2840138Am around there actually, the mountains look very pretty
>>2839490I want to fuck a JK but don't know how to approach them
>>2840138Kyoto Arashiyama has also entered its autumn foliage season.
Is it the right time of year to get chestnuts? If so where do I buy them?
>>2839907It's good if you like seafood. Be sure to check the whole place before buying anything because the prices vary a lot.I recommend it more as part of a Harumi dori walk/bike stroll:You get down at Kachidoki station to Cross the Sumida river to Tsukiji and eat something then walk to Kabukiza (the museum is free). The next blocks are the famous Ginza district which in my opinion is more enjoyable at late afternoon/night
>>2840135I was at kuwayama jinja yesterday, full red foliage cover, was amazing. Only japanies old couple or grannies. One gave my wife a sandwich, because we rode a bus togheter and we spoke few japaniese words with her. Other granda showed us thrught the pound path and it was funnty becaus eit was like 100-150m total but he instisted. Japanese are really so eleganto its not even funny. We were at kameoka onsen with private bath, tho the price was steep, the food and private onsen was worth it, i can give a full name if someone wants recomendation. We returned by hozugawa boatride (it was more like a comedy show then ride, in a goofld way) and now im just arriving at uji.
>>2840177Ginza is the high-end bar district, and for ambitious bar hostesses, owning their own establishment in Ginza is a major dream. Moreover, ambitious young entrepreneurs dream of achieving the status to frequent Ginza's high-end clubs.

In a bar in Shibuya at the moment. Is there any place to go clubbing or dance? Even if I’m by myself.
Went to a yakiniku grill today. Really good though not sure worth the ¥4500, good nonetheless, the server was nice and friendly. Would do again
>>2840196I wouldn't go to a yakiniku place that is cheap like that. I'm going again and paying 9500¥ since last time it was delicious. After eating it I'm full for the whole day anyway so it's not like I'm wasting too much money
>tfw flying out tomorrow back to it all over again bros
>>2840199Honestly, as amazing as Japan is, I can't wait to arrive home again and just sleep for like 18 hours a day for two weeks straight. My whole body is sore. A symptom of travelling to see things rather than than to just enjoy a vacation
>>2840198That’s cheap? I thought the pricing was ok imo, it tasted pretty good too
>>2840202Well, just consider that 100g of Wagyu is 3500 yen, and you can get the idea
>>2840192Honestly that would scare me too. I think I'm just gonna bite the bullet and go even if I'm terrified because otherwise I'm going to fucking die without ever feeling the touch of a woman again.

t-minus 3 months before i stuff myself with yakitori and raw fish and get blind drunk on sake and highballs for a month straighti absolutely cannot wait
I said the other day that driving in Japan was kind of relaxing. That was until the GPS sent me onto the expressway going in the wrong direction (going to naha instead of nago, I wasn't driving head on into traffic) and I couldnt get off the expressway for half an hour because it was gridlocked. Then my GPS couldnt find my hotel and I couldn't see anything because its dark as fuck here and they don't have streetlights. Anyway I made it in the end and couldnt be fucked with dinner so I ate discounted onigiri from lawsons. I guess driving is nice because I can get out of the city but I'm looking forward to getting back to a city with decent public transport.
>>2840214I was going to get a car today, but fuck I really don’t want to drive around here anymore. It’s all backwards and stupid with the km/h, two lanes merging into one, can’t even see the lines that divide the street on some areas. There was a truck on a narrow street, he was letting cars pass. I thought there weren’t anymore because he was there for a hot minute and no cars were passing by, so I thought he’s letting us pass because he was a big ass truck. No, he zips it and I almost t boned him. Like it was out of nowhere and uncalled for. And I see this a lot, nips just make sudden turns out of nowhere saying “good luck everyone else”. Like wtf is up with that
>>2840215The thing that really gets me is the narrow suburban streets. A car comes the other way and I have no idea if I'm going to wrong way, they are going the wrong way, or if its just a really narrow two way street.
Is it normal for everywhere in Osaka except Dotonbori to be dead on Friday night?
Why do amerilards and australians feel the need to scream every time they open their mouth.Just why.
Where do all the girls with wacky hair color and styles go on tokyo? I saw a bunch of them in the morning but I'm clearly in the wrong place at night
>>2840221Osaka closes very early. Seemingly the whole fucking country does. It's been one of my biggest annoyances with Japan. How the fuck do you open at 11AM and yet shit already starts closing at 5PM. Even the most late stores usually close at 9PM. The nightlife in Japan is a fucking meme, completely kills any interest in going for walks at night
>>2840209I've decided I'm not going to go. I will not be tempted by some 3d whore who just got done rimming a man 40 years older than her, i dont care how soft her skin is. I don't want sex anyway I want cuddles from someone who loves and cares for me its so over.

If i ever go there for a longer time maybe ill do the road trip thing amd hit up some onsens, but for the time ill be there in feb, might as well just hang out in sapporo and ride trains vs spending hours commuting daily back and from Noboribetsu and making day trips to see lakes and mountains. Next time

>>2840236Haven't you ever been to places like Juso, Kyobashi, or Umeda?
Have no clue what to do today, so I just hopped on a train and got off at a random spot, then will make my way to the main station
>leave hotel room at 9 am to be out of the way of the housekeeper >come back at 10:30, cleaning supplies are in the same spot as before>come back at 12:30, cleaning supplies are still in the same placeI want to have a nap so I can recover from my hangover, how long do I have to wait? The non-negotiable cleaning every third day thing is so annoying when the third day falls on Saturday or Sunday.
>>2839887For boys, the target ages are three and five.Shichi-Go-San celebrations aren't necessarily held on November 15th; families visit shrines on a convenient day within November. Places like Meiji Shrine in Tokyo, Fushimi Inari in Kyoto, and Sumiyoshi Taisha in Osaka are packed with children celebrating Shichi-Go-San on weekends throughout November.
>>2840236Yeah, when I went to Osaka I was really excited to be able to wake up at 7 and pop over somewhere for a nice breakfast to start my day, only to find that there were maybe two cafes that opened before 10 AM near my hotel and both of them were a 15-20 minute walk minimum.

>>2840386I was following a road that led to a "trail" to the main street of the next station. The trail in question? No trail at all despite maps telling me so. It was trees and timber everywhere, but luckily no spider webs or big creepy spider. Didn’t find anything notable but a headlight of a car. The walk around was nice and tranquil though. Pic wise, I just took pics of the landscapes. Where I’m at is about thirty minutes out of Utsunomiya, so it’s mainly country side, but pretty nonetheless. It’s sunny out so weather wise it was tolerable

Went to see a few castle ruins today in Okinawa. The castle ruins here are pretty neat. I remember I went to one in Sendai and it was like 20 rocks arranged in a square with a statue next to it. At least the ones here have the walls intact. Also went to Chatan America Village. I thought it was neat despite how touristy it is. Its like a theme park. I assume its what a Japanese person thinks America is like if they only visited Disneyland. Now I'm in my hotel room eating my daily Haagen Dazs and drinking some Habu Sake energy highball thing. Im getting used to driving in Japan now. The only thing that sucks is the parking. Might do it again next time I go to Hokkaido for part of the trip at least.
I ended up walking a lot, and was too hungry to look for a place to eat, so I ate Mcsloppas. Forgive me /trv/ though I am craving for a dominos pizza right now
Ichiran is so much better than Ipuddo. I get neither of them are great, but Ichiran does one thing well, while Ipuddo is just mediocre all round. Their soup tastes like instant Ramen. Going forward I will disregard anyone who shills Ipuddo.

Tokyo was rough, I kept disassociating due to how packed it was. Europeans were super rude and walked around like they owned the place. I really hate it. I am in yamaguchi and I feel so out of place. I like the ryokans in yudaonsen but the locals are kinda rude to me. I haven't really enjoyed my evening and it made me cry a bit. I have in 2 days. Is it any good? Will I as a foreigner have fun?

>>2840517i spent a couple days in yamaguchi earlier this year. interesting place. driving up to motonosumi shrine my friend and i passed through a somewhat treacherous practically one-way road through a forested mountain that went on for what seemed like 30 minutes, but right before we got on the road we passed by some countryside estates, one of which had very prominently displayed several human mannequins that had been burned, mutilated, stabbed through with various objects, impaled upright, and/or amalgamated into various monstrosities all over the front lawn. i still wonder if the resident of that house was merely an eccentric or some kind of psychopath trying to live out his urges without actually harming othersalso saw the cutest japanese girl i've ever seen in my life, and probably one of the top 3 overall most beautiful women i've seen working a register at a random michi no eki.

>>2840520Are these areas foreigner friendly? Or they gonna take one look at my white ass and point at the door?Im not like johnny somali tryna make a scene, but i do know there are "no foreigners allowed" places, i dont even think this is racist or "bad" or anything, seems pretty practical, like pretend you're a bar owner in america and a busfulls of chinese tourists come to your place and nobody speaks even a word of english and it's a massive pain in the ass to deal with and annoyance to the regulars; purely on account of the language barrier.I can sumimasen and point at shit on a menu and kudasai, and arigato gojimas when they hand me my drink, but thats the extent of my japanese

>>2840550Is it your first time here? Sounds like culture shock / homesickness. Happened to me the first time I was in Japan. Just keep pushing on and you'll get used to it. Are you being overly friendly to locals and trying to start conversations with them? Because they don't like that. If you're minding your own business and not being obnoxious they shouldn't have a problem with you at all. Sounds like a lot of it is just in your head, which will resolve itself as you get out more and your expectations start to realign with reality. A lot of people struggle with Japan if they come with very open and outgoing societies like America or Australia because Japan is a very different society.
>9am>ojii sans sharing a beer already Looks cozy
>>2840550Are you sure you're not obnoxious or look retarded?I've made a point of avoiding chain restaurants and focus on local/mom and pops shops and someone closing the door in my face happened once, most people don't care (even if they look justifiably uncomfortable) or are straight up friendly.

>>2840402You see the anime from 1-4 seasons ago and what you like. Then you hit the "new goods" shops to see their prices like Animate, Amiami, Kotobukiya, Cospa, Tamashi Nations, Volk Hobby, Don Quijote. Yodobashi, Bic Camera and Softmap also have some but notwhere near as much as the ones listed before. After that you go the used part so Lashinbang, Surugaya, Akihabara X, Book Off, other smaller stores to check for very old series you like. They also sell crane figures for like 1500~3000 yen but honestly you can get these in Nakano or Ikebukuro or random Bookoffs for a lot cheaper like the Bookoff in Ayase. Now if you're really into anime follow the latest stuff or just shows you like you might have seen some events.https://collabo-cafe.com/events/tag/akihabara/Usually Akiba has tons of events these can be divided intoCollab Cafe - A cafe has unique items or menus based on an IPPop up Store - A very small temporary store with exclusive one time goodsExhibitions - An exhibition of something think of it like a Temporary Museum to somethingStore Collabs - Konbini, Supermarkets, Uniqlo and so on have different collabs from different IPS like buy 4 candies from Lawson and get a clearfile from an anime.Comic Book / Game Releases - A new volume or something released and it has some event or exclusive goods tied with it somewhere. After all of that you can actually go to the maid cafes, a massive waste of time and money if you don't speak Japanese. After that it's the con cafes that are basically Cabaret clubs with cosplay an even bigger waste of money and scams. There also tons of chain restaurants of all the famous stuff in Akiba.
