what happens on Maines many islands? what is life like there?Mt Desert Island is pretty big but there are a lot more that are smaller. i know some are private but what about the ones with towns/communities?
I used to live there, it's beautiful. There's a land bridge that appears at low tide from Mt Desert Island to a nearby small island with hiking trails and stuff, you can walk or drive across it. But every year, nobody tells tourists that it's temporary, or they just don't pay attention, and they park their car on the bridge, and it floats away when the tide comes in lolAlso the mountain on that island is the first place in the US to see the sunrise every day, great place to take a girl especially if she's into outdoorsy stuff, but you have to get up really early and bring flashlights for the hike. Really nice view from up there though, especially with the sun rising over the ocean. Also it's 99% white, or at least used to be, and the winters are hardcore

How is Monhegan island?
>>2839097The Maine coast is one of the most idyllic regions in America. Beautiful walkable villages, an intricate coastline, weird white people who are quiet and generally kind. I spent several weeks there sleeping in my van. It was easy to find a quiet spot on most nights, and nobody ever tried to disturb me or make trouble. I saw very few "No Overnight Parking" signs. Go inland and the kindness disappears; the forest dwellers are a little more feral and suspicious of outsiders. I did end up going to a birthday party for some 32 year old roastie in the woods near Washington, Maine where everyone tripped on acid after drinking all day and got bent. I passed out in my van and woke up tripping with some big argument going on in the yard. It was one of the most surreal experiences of my life. After the unwanted guest was rid, everyone went back into the house and then some weird faggot from Brooklyn came around with a huge bag of ketamine that the roastie's boyfriend paid $550 for. I did a couple small lines and basically lost consciousness, slumped in front of the toilet while puking and was carried out to my van. They had to tell me what had happened, because my memory was blank. The next morning I felt awesome and cleaned up the whole yard while everyone else was hungover and grumpy.
what about the freak island?https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Malaga_Island
>>2839338Sounds like an interesting experience
I lived on Deer Isle as a kid in the early 2000s. Pretty typical rural American childhood, maybe we didn't go to the movies or mall so much because you had to drive so damn far. When it wasn't little league season my friends and I had a dedicated Calvinball league going for a few years. There was an interesting dynamic between locals and rich summer people. We had a winter sport called 'porching' where we'd go to empty summer homes and just peer through the windows. I remember the guys over in Stonington had a deep-seated culture (not hobby or fad but a fully-fledged culture) of doing donuts in the main streets, and I mean burning rubber all day every day, i guess because there was nothing else to do. I didn't realize that wasn't normal adult male behavior until I moved away. I do have friends from some of the little islands even further out who had to take a boat to school every day, they were real weirdos. A lot of religious weirdos in places like Vinalhaven.
>>2840908lol holy shit I just reminded myself of this documentary, haven't seen this in like 20 years, took me a minute to find.https://vimeo.com/11254257
>>2839097>>2839112>99% whiteBrotha I got some news for you…went last year and it was 1/3 jeet tourists at all the parking lots lmao. They would walk about 500 feet up the trail take pics on top of a rock and walk back down in flip flops. There were tons at the top of mt desert. All came up with shuttle or drove lol. Pathetic. Didnt see any of them at restaurants but they were all chillin in the main park in Bar Harbor
>>2843044That's truly disheartening to hear. Damn....is nowhere safe? I bet it's still very white in the wintertime, at least
There's an interesting dynamic within Bar Harbor, between the residents of the town and the people who attend the college there, an art college with a generally kinda out there sense of things, called the College of the Atlantic, or just COA for people in the place. The natives think they're weirdos, and the college attendees think the locals are weirdos. But there's only one real grocery store on the island so they cross paths all the time.I got to view it with an outsider's perspective, being neither, I was just there because my gf was attending that college. And I gotta say, that college was pretty weird. The whole campus is just fancy old buildings built by/for a rich old man in the early days of America, who donated it to education when he died. Very beautiful place and estate, but I doubt he'd approve of the things going on there now. Particularly, some of the art galleries.
