Long story short, the place where I was staying at is getting renovated and I have to be out for a month or more and have nowhere to go. I have a job and I’m not a junkie (just smoke weed) and have all my stuff in a storage unit. I am a daily commuter so I’m used to finding places with bathrooms, wifi, outlets, etc. and I tried sleeping on the A Train a couple nights ago and managed from about midnight til 6am. Had to keep waking up at the terminals and couldn’t really relax but it was something and wasn’t out in the freezing cold. I’ve considered doing intake for a shelter but I hear horror stories and don’t want to get my stuff stolen, catch bedbugs, or get assaulted. Just wondering if any nyc anons or other homeless have experienced similar situations and could give any advice as to keeping my wits and sanity. I also don’t have any money until I get paid tomorrow so hotels are a no go, not that they’re even an option for me with my income anyway.
I saw once a police documentary from USA and it showed that some people sleep in storage units. Seems desperate but it might be your one chance.
>>2839861"First-world country", everyone
>>2839861>I’m not a junkie >(just smoke weed)Yeah okay junkie, just go to the next homeless shelter and sleep with the other mentally ill junkies like you. Alternatives are rehab in a mental hospital or doing the world a favor and necking yourself.[-]
>>2839861>Long story short, the place where I was staying at is getting renovated and I have to be out for a month or more and have nowhere to goIf your place is being renovated to the extent that you must evacuate the premises , basically all 50 states IIRC, the landlord is REQUIED by law to make accommodations during the renovations/pay for temporary housing.https://bbgllp.com/new/nyc-landlord-legal-guide-renovations/"Landlords are obligated to maintain safe, sanitary, and habitable conditions throughout the renovation period. This includes minimizing dust, noise, and disruptions to essential services like electricity, water, and heating. If work is extensive enough to temporarily displace tenants, landlords may need to provide alternative accommodations or offer rent abatements depending on the circumstances."If the landlords aren't doing this you have a free easy win case against them. >>2839922OP is most likely bullshitting or a resident under a sublease that the landlord doesn't know about, thus his roommate is kicking him out temporarily.
>>2840021op said "the place I was staying at" not "the legally recognized, fully HPD-compliant apartment where I was the sole primary tenant in an official 12 month lease filed with the New York State Division of Housing and Community Renewal"
>>2840023Which is why I suggested the latter end of my post, OP is most likely staying at a friends apartment without being on the lease. Has /trv/ never signed a lease before holy lol.
>>2840031Do you think someone with their shit together enough to have a traditional, legally enforceable lease agreement would be sleeping on the A train and asking 4chan what to do? In your head, did that scenario actually make sense?
>>2840040Because there is a shit load of trolling on this board and it wouldn't surprise me if this is yet another "lol (US city) is le-bad?!??!" post and keep in mind there are retards on this board who don't know what a connecting flight is.You have way more faith in this board than I do or just trying to be a contrarian.
>>2840041I am not invested in this board at all. I used to be a semi regular here, like 10+ years ago, but I grew bored of all the real traveller dick waving and virgins crying about people having sex. so I pop in here about once a year for a couple of days and then leave again. I'm just cringing at your autistic diatribe about BUT THAT'S ILLEGAL, I never understood why people felt that style of reply was useful in any context, is it some kind of Just World delusion? I just don't get it
>>2840043>I'm just cringing at your autistic diatribe about BUT THAT'S ILLEGAL, I never understood why people felt that style of reply was useful in any context, is it some kind of Just World delusion? I just don't get itBecause as I was and have been pointing out, anon might not understand renters rights. You'd be surprised just how many people don't understand that shit and just go full autist mode no eye contact stare at the ground type "w-well okay I guess" to landlords. Why you are getting so bent out of shape for telling someone they have rights(unless he is breaking a lease) is kinda hilarious.
>>2840045I guess I'm autistic about NYC real estate and landlord/tenant politics and your post had just the right blend of truths and random irrelevant stupidity to set me off. and HPD has a very well indexed, well maintained site with all this stuff laid out in plain english and about 10 other languages with direct links to city resources and complaint forms and so on, so linking a private law firm's website triggered my 'tism because it's superfluous at best, potentially out of date, and terribly misguided if you're actually trying to help someone
>>2839861This is probably a stupid question, but have you considered staying in a cheap hotel or air bnb like 20 miles outside the city and then take commuter trains back into the city for work? Or better yet, ask a coworker if you could crash with them for a month?
>>2840278airbnbs cost the same if not more than hotels. they also have tons of hidden fees. it's for people who want a quirky experience, not for saving money
>>2839861Hey OP, I was in NYC visiting some friends but I had one night were nobody was able to host me. I ended up going to the airport (I think it was JFK) and was able to find a nice, cosy spot to spend the night. This was like 10 years ago so I don't know how security may have changed, how far inside you can get without a valid ticket, etc. But I found it great, there were bathrooms, water, nice temperature, all the amenities. I slept on a bench, I don't remember how comfy it was but I'm guessing not much.
>>2840342they got rid of the hidden fee stuff, at least in america, you see the full price, except tax, yes it would be nice to see the price with tax included, but let's take our victories
>>2841173>except taxhow do you actually live like this lol? it's so utterly retarded.
>>2841184>utterly retarded.Sales tax in the US goes from 0 (Oregon, New Hampshire, Montana) to a max of 6%. Tons of states have a 2, 3 or 5% sales tax. Doesn't really make a big difference. Here in Europe I'm paying 21% on everything I purchase. Now THAT is utterly retarded.
>>2839861>has a big pile of shit possessions he won't get rid of>has no money even after a period of employmentWhy are American homeless people always like this? I own nothing of value and save the majority of my paycheck. Just left my place this morning, looking forward to eight months of homelessness (not in America, fuck no, I'm not as stupid as OP).
>>2839861>Homeless in NYC, need tips/adviceYeah, get a bus ticket to Portland or LA...today.
>>2841363>go to shithole B or C but more soulless
>>2841371>but more soulless>Portland living characatures are soulless vs yelling subway pusher muh sovl
>>2839861ill give you a couch to crash on in queens if you find me girls to fuck
>>2839861This society is rotten to the core. In a normal society, a worker should be able to afford a house. In times of hardship, remember that Adolf Hitler also had to be homeless at some point but it was his path to trying to be the change he wanted to see in the world.
Why would you be afraid of getting assaulted? You should be the one assaulting others
>>2839861Cheap Car. Be careful where you park.
So glad I finally got the fuck out of America a few hours ago. Got so tired of the smelly homeless or quasi-homeless Amerimutts drinking, drugging, babbling and hollering every time I had to take a bus through downtown Raleigh. People talk all kinds of shit about pajeets, but their B.O. has nothing on the stench of the unwashed negro or white homeless bum. Bundled up freezing their ass off every winter because they're too fucking retarded to make any plans for the future, i.e. go where it's warm. Miami and Houston have plenty of cheap hostel-style dorms where a "homeless" person can stay. Pay nightly online.
Do the intake but you don’t have to stay. The longer you’re “in the system” the more resources they can justify on you ie better shelter. I’ve heard the horror stories, you gotta keep to yourself - eg don’t be gay you’ll be targeted by the violent idiot who still thinks he’s still in rikers. You should also do it before a blizzard hits because it will be even more people (although if it’s under 32° every shelter is required to take walk ins, although they might just bus you elsewhere). This is called “code blue”, they also used to have a bus that didn’t move, just ran the heat and let people sleep in it when it was cold, look into it.BRC is a charity, if you hang out in Penn or GCT they walk around and are in bright orange and know all the resources, talk to them (I did this for work).I know youre strong and can make it, but you NEEEEED to get off the streets. Day by day your mental health declines and you might not notice until one day you think heroin sounds like a good idea. You MUST ask for help. People often die on the street, and I’m talking diabetes and cardiac issues from years of self-neglect. Homelessness is a very very slippery slope but I often met people who went through the system and got an apartment. You need a case manager, do the intake or talk to BRC, they have walkins but idk the hours to just hang out in Penn and ask. Again, it’s their job to help but many homeless people just look like you, a normal guy, so you MUST walk up to them and ask for help. And not just once, ask for help everyday. NYC is a good place to be homeless because you have a constitutional RIGHT to shelter here. You MUST get into a shelter, you like and care for yourself right? This is a crisis, take your own care seriously
i'd give you advice but its been a month already
>>2846294Bro I am literally living in the sewers now with a clan of hobos, I need someone to help me I can't take this any longer
>>2839922Happens in Europe too, dipshit.
>>2846329find somebody that is subleasing their apartment for the holidays and live there, or find a dorm/sro that wIll let you stay short term. how much money do you have?
You're doomed. I was homeless in NYC, and got out of there ASAP. Was pretty sure I was going to die last winter, and I was facing jail time for trespassing at my old camping ground. I eventually just stopped bothering and freight hopped to the west with a group in the old homeless shelter off Astoria, that were contact with a hippie community in Eureka, California. Took about 2-3 weeks to get there. The Hippie communities aren't the greatest, so I don't recommend staying there, but what they're REALLY good for is finding a job. I got an offer to work at a plantation out in San Joaquin. The pay isn't great, but the owner gives me a place to stay and I get invited for dinner. It's heaven out here compared to the east coast.
