Thinking of saying fuck it and doing the working holiday visa next year starting in feb (I've got enough savings to not work for the whole year though)has anyone lurking done something similar? i was sort of thinking about renting a small place somewhere like Osaka and doing 1-2 week trips to other regions at the best time of year for them rather than begpacking across the country or hostel living. Plus I like going fishing and camping a lot and you can't plan that longterm in advance... Well, I guess you can do that while hiking/begpacking but I like having a PC too much.
>>2840792Why not rent a weekly or monthly apartment? In Tokyo, you can rent one for around 100,000 yen a month, and in regional areas, you can find them for under 100,000 yen. Plus, most come with internet already set up.
>>2840792I haven't gone on my trip yet, but the visa application is relatively painless. Just make sure your itinerary is detailed and makes it clear that you are going back and forth from Osaka. I had to explain mine at the consulate and fill out more details because I had the "genius" idea of filling mine out non-chronologically. Also, don't mention work or school on your application.
It’s a bit depressing when you visit a small town on a beautiful Saturday and the elderly volunteers outnumber the tourists 5:1
>>2840800Yeah once you get out of the cities it becomes clear how much of a geriatric society Japan has become. There are so many old people, no kids anywhere. There are also so many old people just doing meaningless work like directing traffic in an empty card park. I dunno if that's because they need the money or retirement is just so painful and meaningless to them that working a pointless job is better than sitting at home.
>>2840797>Why not rent a weekly or monthly apartment?Well, I'm asking here so I can hear about things I've not considered. I had vague ideas about stringing the work-holiday visa into a student(language school) visa into whatever else I can [nospoiler]so I don't have to go back to my own shithole[/nospoiler] and I guess my brain was just thinking more long-term. I can only imagine the headache it would be to get kicked out of a weekly apartment on the whim of the owner not renewing the rental though.>>2840798>Also, don't mention work or school on your application.Funny you say that, seems counter intuitive since>working holiday>don't mention workI hadn't decided yet if I mention my minor online job or not which I could support myself off (not that I need to, since I have savings anyway). I suppose I'm just over0concerned about the idea of getting 'caught' and kicked up the arse for it.
>>2840773>i'll never be able to experience that kinda stuff with a beautiful girl in the statesnigger... you bought a prostitute and then she tried to scam you. this could happen anywhere in the USA

>>2840788No one's gonna click a catbox link though.
>>2840779It's kinda rare (in my experience anyway) to see trash cans outside of conbinis. From what I've seen they usually keep them inside, and in the more crowded/trafficked areas of a city a lot of conbinis don't even have trashcans period. I suppose if you have them inside you can kind of guilt a person that comes in to throw away trash to at least buy something small, but in areas with more thoroughfare there's no need for the additional labor. The only place I can recall off the top of my head seeing conbinis with exterior trash are the ones at highway rest stops. >>2840801>There are also so many old people just doing meaningless work like directing traffic in an empty card park. I dunno if that's because they need the money or retirement is just so painful and meaningless to them that working a pointless job is better than sitting at home.I think it's mainly the latter. Case in point, I live in one of those small towns full of old people, the other day I was at a local event and bought a coffee from a vendor that must've been in his late 70s; he took nearly 10 minutes to painstakingly make my coffee for all of 400 yen. He was running a one man show selling coffee and caramelized sweet potatoes and making them to order, one at a time. If he was in it for the money he could've at least prepped them beforehand or had an assistant there to help him (as by the time my coffee was finished there was a line of like 4 people waiting for him to take their order), so I concluded that he's in it simply for love of the game. I've also heard that the government actively encourages older people to take these kinds of jobs as a way to combat loneliness or promote continued socialization in retirement. I've never personally verified this, though. In really, really inaka areas - I'm talking the kinds of places that don't even have convenience stores nearby - they play happy music at regular intervals throughout the day as a way to try and cheer up depressed retirees.
>>2840807I would
>>2840804Weekly apartments require rent to be paid in advance and are essentially a hybrid between hotels and regular apartments, catering to travelers or businesspeople seeking extended stays. If you're the kind of person who gets kicked out of hotels for being unreasonable, you'll likely get kicked out by the apartment management company too.
>>2840810>If you're the kind of person who gets kicked out of hotels for being unreasonableI was more worried about some jap boomer who owns the rental having a random spell of 'You know what, fuck these gaijins' that weekI'll look into considering it at least.
>>2840704Got a ride in it last year. Absolutely awesome, best seats I've ever had in a train, and it wasn't expensive.
>>2840754just got back from a week in naha last tuesday, met my gf's family for the first time which was kinda rough as a dekinai. I liked it a lot, everyone was really nice and god the food is great. Only downside was the lack of public transport v tokyo (shouldve gotten my int drivers license like I did for hokkaido last year) so we had to taxi everywhere which was a little pricey. Yui rail is fun though when it makes sense to take it, it's just not very conveniently placed. Overall the chillness of Okinawa really appealed to me, everyone is very マイペース and I felt less self conscious than I normally do in Tokyo.
>>2840788If he uploads one carefully selected photo per location, that's fine.
I'm not going to lie, anons. Before coming to Japan for my first time, I was of a very VERY firm stance that I would never live in Japan. But my mind has changed and I am vaguely considering working towards that goal as soon as I get back to my country. Will this feeling fade? Is it normal? Just the train system alone makes me want to live in Tokyo. Not to mention the girls, or the automation for everything, the cleanliness, etc. I've been troubled about this.
>>2840812Weekly apartments are owned by the operating company (or may be leased by the building). Therefore, individual landlords are not involved.

Do they even have grocery stores since no one cooks?
>>2840808I've always been told Japan went schizo and got rid of all outdoor trash cans pretty much nationwide after that cult they had in the 90s kept planting bombs in them for a while and then they never returned because it's less upkeep for the government. Could be made up bullshit.

>>2840931I've been studying Japanese casually for some time, but if I were to place myself, I'd say I'm only on the line between N5 and N4, with like 150 kanji. A long, long way to go. Yes to IT, and wealthy, well, I live with my parents so I save up a lot of cash. But realistically, any plans to move to Japan would take several years of prep, like 5 years at least, since I live in a country with a weak currency.
>>2840944Keep at it anon. I don't know where I am at but I noticed a hard plateau where you struggle a lot but once you pass it, its definitely worth it. After constantly drilling it into my brain one day it just "clicked" and now I'm over that point where I can engage with Japanese media legibly and have basic conversations with Japanese people. Eventually you hit a point where you understand most of the words in a sentence and can start rapidly picking up new words through this. It only gets easier once you break that plateau. It is extremely rewarding in the end.

I remember a when I was in Kamakura a couple of years ago and it was full of school groups on a field trip. A group of 5 school girls came up to me and asked if they could interview me for thier English class, then afterwards asked for a group photo with me to show as proof to their teacher. I felt weird about the photo part but they were nice girls. I wish I was that good at speaking a foreign language at thier ages, Australian public school system is dogshit when it comes to languages. I went to Charaumi aquarium today. Was okay I guess, super crowded. The enoshima aquarium was better and way less crowded. The stuff around the aquarium was neat, they have some new 'Tropical Dream World' with a few greenhouses and this neat stone tower. The whole giant park around the aquarium was deserted, they seem to get on a bus, visit the aquarium then leave.

The reason Akihabara sucks now is because its full of fucking normie tourists who want to come into Toranoana and take pictures of all the 'crazy hentai'. And then I got on another taxi, and he fucking asked me if I get drunk easily and whipped out some advanced nihongo that I could not understand. >>2841012They've never seen a Black man before
>>2841014>capitalisedonly races that gets capitals are Europeans and Japanese (honourary). lower case for the rest like blacks, jews and koreans
Who else saves all thier 5 and 50 yeb coins throughout the trip to donate to a shrine before you leave? I heard those coins, even if it means I have to break a 10,000 yen note and the cashier gives me the stink eye. That 50yen coin is going to the shrine to fulfil my wish.
>>2841007I mean, if you were gonna steal their money, you aren't that nice... I would never do that.
>>2841016If you ever end up with 1 yen or 5 yen coins, you’re doing it wrong
>>2841017Anything above 4k yen goes from pocket change to actual money. There's a limit to kindness before it becomes self sabotage
>>2841015ugly, fat, bald, hairy, or smelly whites too
>>2841023americans don't count as white
>>2841020No, you are a 黒人 if you steal anything besides a clear umbrella (because I sometimes deliberately leave mine in the stand outside a konbini when I don't want it any more and I assume this is common). Claiming that stealing more money is somehow better is just bizarre.
>>2841025You say that, but let's say you hypothetically find one million dollars on the floor. If you don't take it you are retarded. We can lessen that amount until we find your limit.
>>2841027True, every man has a price. But 4000¥ is low, and makes you a man of low morals.
>>2840950Anecdotally, the consulate didn't mind me using Kyoto as a hub city. As long as you're leaving the city every once and a while, you're probably fine. You don't need to stick to your itinerary anyways.
>>2841027I enjoyed the use of inductive proof btw.
>>2841029>You don't need to stick to your itinerary anyways.Oh, that's a relief to hear.

Seriously though, it's ridiculous how cute japanese woman are.I'm in a normal restaurant and the waitress is just acting normally and it's crazy how soft she is while being businesslike and efficient. You have to appreciate cuteness even in 3d.
>>2841025You're right, it is common.>>2841027Subhumans like you are why high-trust societies are dying out. That said, you did well to return that man's wallet. I hope you can grow that crumb of decency until you become a real person.
>>2841043They really are. Even the average looking ones look really well groomed and maintained, crazy desu
>>2840976>A group of jks were checking out the menu of a shop next to me, and the exclamations of kawaii, yabai and tabetai! will sustain me for monthsThanks for painting such a picture---fat, greasy, diseased weeb losing his shit over a bunch of braindead 4/10 Jap girls doing what braindead Jap girls do.
>>2841043It's not natural lol. They pretend to have leg deformities, which can result in real issues, for the sake of looking cute. I'm not going to lower myself to linking insta reels on the 'chins but there is a Japan-born white content creator who makes videos about this where he portrays a young Japanese woman on a date with a foreigner. She acts very cute until her friend calls and when she picks up her voice drops an octave while she discusses ditching her date to go to a party, and she makes a dramatic excuse (like her friend was hit by a car) to leave. It highlights the difference in public and private behaviour (it's implied the girl character doesn't know the male character speaks Japanese and knows her excuse is invented) which I guess is related to tatemae/honne.Anyway my point is everything Japanese people do in public is an act.
Be me. Go in to talk to girls. Walk in and ask if Geikokujinn is ok? he says something really fast I dont understand I stand there awkwardly and he starts looking at me funny like im about to kick his ass then does the whole X with hands indicating to go away..Go to neat food night market next. 3 cute girls try to walk right through me and 1 trips over my huge foot. I put my arm out to catch her from falling off her giant platform shoes while calling out sumimasen and she bounces off of my forearm. All 3 look at each other then look at me like I just groped her in public...Japan is ass.
>>2841043>Seriously though, it's ridiculous how cute japanese woman are.
>>2841048>>2841049
>>2841048>it's Japan's fault I'm a disgusting oaf
>>2841047Is that really so bad, though? If you never see the person behind the mask, that may as well be the real person, as far as you're concerned. If they only act badly when you're not around, then it's fair to say that, at least to you, they are the perfect being
Most nip women have gross teeth. That’s what turns me off
>>2841049why are you posting me?
>>2841046Hey anon if the world is ugly in your eyes, thats on you.
>>2841051 imagine white knighting a country that obviously hates you. Buy a vowel you extreme autist. I assume youre not picking up on these not so subtle hints because youre used to this.
>>2841047Is that the version of Japan you created in your head?
>>2841052I didn't say it's bad, just that they're acting cute as opposed to naturally being cute.British people are also considered "fake" by some because we often don't speak our minds or say what we mean. I think it's nice when it produces an orderly society, and I don't like very direct people. But the Japanese overdo it and many feel isolated and suffocated by it. Actually sometimes British people feel that way as well because our culture tends to produce people pleasers who go along with unreasonable things simply because they're too polite to say No.
>>2840862shirakawago is cool but its super busy and touristy. there's other villages in the mountains nearby that are a lot quieter, like ainokura

>>2841056What hints are you talking about? I think 90% of the "Japanese people openly disrespect foreigners" occurrences happen to people who look like shit.A few weeks ago I encountered an openly racist Japanese guy. I spoke a few words of Japanese to him and he told me he liked my country and it's only the other foreigners he doesn't like. Other Japanese people told me I dressed better than most foreigners. Some approach me so it's not even like I've forced them to be kind out of politeness. The fact you can't imagine this kind of thing happening, and your reaction to my last post, tells me everything I need to know about you and why Japanese people don't like you.
>>2841056I don’t think it is the country buddyPeople in general don’t seem to like you
First time in Japan, Kyoto Took me like 20-30 minutes to find a shrine and a bar without any tourists around or English speaking staff/english menuYou all exaggerate Kyoto overtourism
>>2841065whatever your post is saying, it's not overtourism
>>2841065It's quieter at night and away from the hotspots. It's also not the high season right now.
>>2841063>some guy told me to go fuck myself. You probably look like you just came out of a magic the gathering convention and, again, still having trouble detecting peoples inherent hatred for you. But you go live your Disney SEA fantasy life, you legend in your own head.
Since you guys are talking about fat blobs, I just went to a shop to buy something, interacted with the cashier, and later realized there was quite a lot of chocolate around my mouth
>>2841068I think you're talking about yourself anon. I'm so sorry your mother didn't abort you, your life must have been so hard.
It is incomprehensible to the mind of the autist that someone who isn't ugly might also be deeply into Japanese culture, I think that's called projection
>>2841070You seem adamantly opposed to the concept no one likes you for some reason. Imagine your cope right now.
What is your go to konbini meal /trv/?For me it’s the beef bowl, with a grape soda/caramel latte, an onigiri, sometimes fried chicken or a pizza bun, and a nice cream puff or taiyaki
>>2841072 >You seem adamantly opposed to the concept no one likes you for some reasonIt's very telling (and a bit sad) that you think it's noteworthy that someone would believe others enjoy their company...
>>28410732 famichiki, 2 chocolate cookies, strawberry milk. Simple, effective.
>>2841071fat fingers typed that. I see why I didnt get a warning Japan hates themselves and hates us and Im walking into an extremely antisocial society filled with dillusional gaikokjinn. SOMEONE was gatekeeping the their 2d waifus ITT..Now post your face or shut up, keanu reeves.
>>2841073Famichiki futatsu and an onigiri, sometimes an egg sando for food. Vitamin jelly, green tea or coffee to drink depending on how healthy I feel.
>>2841073Both the pork and shrimp sandwiches are really good, I get either orange juice or that tea with milk in it to go with
>chicks tell me I look like Matt Damon.>where ever I go the salary men let me know Im dressed nice.
>>2841065went to a JNTO event recently, they mentioned exactly this. Japan as a whole receives fewer tourists than Paris alone, so "overtourism" isn't a matter of having too many, but failing to spread them out. everyone goes to like five shrines in kyoto, so those are swamped but everything else is completely neglected.>>2841073inarizushi set
>>2840991When spring comes, they do it with cherry blossom branches. And many of them fly into a rage when their actions are pointed out to them. Since dealing with such people is troublesome, most Japanese turn a blind eye.
Walked past the restaurant I wanted to eat at 5 times and didn't summon the confidence to go in so its ice cream and beer for dinner
>>2841082>I can walk have a block away from the scramble and be surrounded by authentic Japanese culture.

>>2841084It was probably organ meat and raw fish. That does something quite special to the restrooms in the train stations during commuter hour. My honest recommendation is eat where the locals eat. Mcdonalds.
>>2841088I do that at 5am after the night club kicks us all out
>>2841086Thanks, I've been doing well lately but I wasn't feeling it tonight. There were some guys in there staring at me when I walked past.>>2841088I'd eat that. Conbini ratings? For me its 7/11 > Family Mart >>>>>>>>> Lawsons. Lawsons sucks.
>>2841093ThisI thought it was just me that lawsons is just so meh

>>2840818The food gets old fast.Trains get old when they're the only realistic way to commute daily. You will not get the actually attractive women you see on the streets.
>>2841097Even as a tourist, the food gets stale. Sometimes 711 is good, but that gets old quick. And restaurants start looking the same too. Times like this I’d just refresh my palate with something gross and greasy, like Dominos or Mcdonald’s
How do I let a guy know I'm dtf when we meet eyes in the onset? Do I stand up so he can see my cock? Do I wait for him to stand up and tell him he has a nice cock?

>>2841097The eggs in ramen will give you the farts. If youre doing ramen proper you should be cooking the taste buds out of your mouth to get in and get out and give your spot to the next guy. They dont even talk to each other. 100% of them will attempt to walk through you. Once you start hating your life you will start to adjust and look like you fit in. >>2841073Chicken cutlet sandwich. Like, 3 of them. That's it.I'm a chicken sandwich FIEND it's usually what I have for lunch most days at home too. I try to avoid konbini meals though because it's a waste of a chance for better food.

>>2841097>Trains get old when they're the only realistic way to commute daily.I'd rather my train ride be boring than an 'exciting' trip through a 'vibrant' American urban jungle.
>>28410937/11 is the best hands down. Best coffee, great rotating seasonal menu, the only convenience store with smoothies, really good soups, and as of earlier this month my location has started offering pizzas. They're not anything special quality-wise, but far from terrible. Also my local 7/11 employs lots of cute JDs on their baitos during the weekend noon shift, which is mainly when I go to convenience stores in the first place.Family Mart is next. I like their generics a lot, especially that orange zero calorie fiber drink - I don't know why but it suits my palate really well. Other than that it's just a solid all-around convenience store, but it doesn't excel anywhere. There used to be a cute gyaru working at my local Famima but she was only around for like two months. Famichiki is a little overhyped.I have to rank Lawson last, mainly because I can't pin down their niche. What's their draw? The sweets maybe? The Mega coffee cup is good for the memes I suppose, but the coffee itself is unremarkable. Also my local Lawson has a jeet working there. He's a nice guy and I have nothing against him personally, but I don't want to support a business that employs jeets.

>>2840715Some people are sadly not impressed by Tokyo. I think also a lot of us are emotionally invested. I know I sure am. It's was like a dream come true.Like I can't begin to tell you all the emotions that swelled in me when I first walked across the rainbow bridge and saw Tokyo Tower and the surrounding area on one side, Skytree in the Distance and Odaiba opposite of it. I started watching anime when I was like 5 year old on German TV now I'm 35 years old, I'm not even from Germany. But I learned German by watching anime, then it was on to English and finally Japanese. All the shows Card Captor Sakura, X, Tenchi Muyou!, Tokyo Mew Mew, Conan, Sailor Moon from my childhood were all there now. It's like standing on the grounds of a famous battle or religious site for me. It took me a 20 years to get there at first now I go yearly and I still get teary eyes because for the first 15+ years of my childhood I was broke ass Eastern European with no chances of ever going to Japan. I'm 100% certain whatever happening in my brain is the same thing that happens when highly religious people go to Mecca or Jerusalem or the Jew Wall thing. And it's not like I'm alone it's literally called visiting sacred sites. Like a ton of my Japanese Yurucamp friends descended on Skytree this weekend to get some Yurucamp stuff. People flew from Hokkaido, Kyushu, China just to get there and gram some Yurucamp cans. You get a real feeling like the culture as a whole cares about your hobby. Anime songs playing in drug stores, games you play on your phone having ads in every train station. To me it always honestly mind breaking I never am the "target audience" in my country. But when I go to Japan it's like there a specific very large group of people with identical hobbies like me that has massive marketing thrown their way.
>>2841190Depends on what you'll do. I don't have Iwaki expirence but I did Hirosaki and Aomori from Aomori in two days. It's totally doable. Hiking I'm not sure I know the lift and stuff doesn't work in Winter I can tell you that much I think I remember it saying from May-June to October-early NovemberAlso when going to Tohoku and Hokkaido take into account the weather is 1-2 months ahead of Tokyo. Fall in Tokyo/Osaka doesn't start until DecemberMeanwhile in Hokkaido it start mid October and Tohoku is like November 1stish.

Anyone else going to be in country in january? Particularly new years in tokyo. I know new years isnt a time people go out drinking over there, so ill end up hanging out with mostly foreigners anyway.
>>2841249There's a vtuber store in Akiba where there's 2 floors to hololive, plus the 5th they call Secret Base that only has holoX merch, and a huge screen in the wall playing performances. I'm probably missing some fucking obvious stuff too. Right tons of seafood stuff like Uni (Sea Urchin). Unagi (Eel), Madai/Tai (Red Snapper), Ankake from Nagoya they always call it "Nagoyan Soul Food" it's basically tons of spaghetti.
>>2841238they probably know it's intimidating for foreigners, but they deserve a giggle now and then. that reminds me, still haven't tried natto, it's been on my list for a whilealso, if you find a furikake mix (those flakes and whatever they sprinkle onto rice) that you like, it's like magic, makes simple rice so delicious, gonna stock up on it and bring as much home as possibleenjoy your cuisine quest o7>>2841252staying in tokyo for comiket & new year's but heading to shiga after. do they still have nice fireworks?

>>2841256>furikakeyeah! that's what it's called, I can never remember the name. I know about that stuff and have a bunch at home, been getting it at local chinese grocery joints for years, long before I even went to japan or knew it was japanese. really can spice up some plain rice. I've also used it on some onigiri I made myself (homemade in burgerland, so I just use smoked salmon as the fill). good stuff!>>2841250>>2841255epic list, thank you very much, I've had udon in japan actually, forgot about it completely, it was always fine, but more or less comparable to udon I've had elsewhere. Both places admittedly were mall food courts (i wanna say on odaiba, and inside or adjacent to tokyo tower)What's the deal with soba? I've actually never had it. I know they do it cold and that always seemed strange to me. Funny enough, regarding ramen, I've never actually tried any of the major chains, I heard about most of them (didn't hear anything bad) and then made a conscious point to only hit up random places (which in hindsight could also 100% be chains) to be more authentic, although I suppose Chilis and Burger King are pretty authentically American, and avoiding them might be missing out. I should go to ichiran etc... this time>Katsudef will get some of this. missed out last time, and also something I had never really dabbled with even from abroad (been to jap joints all over the US, and parts of SEA/EU, was always ramen or sushi, knew there was a fried scene, and had had it once or twice and it was fine but mostly confused at it being something someone would get at a japanese joint)>different curry/donburi chainsgood to know! I mainly was hitting coco in sendai because it was close to where I was staying and was a good place to sober and rest up a bit before more nighttime adventuring. exact same case for tenya in tokyo.
>>2841266>>2841250>>2841255contd...>Jiiro Ramen or Butayamafamiliar with the concept, maybe not for me, like I was in vegas a couple months ago, and while I think the heart attack grill is "cool" and all, not someplace I'd eat. maybe 15-20 years ago I'd be all about the idea of mountains of food, but at this point, I'm usually getting 12oz steaks. I don't have the single sitting belly capacity for crazy shit like I did when I was younger.>Komeda, Doutour, Tullys, Excelsior, Pronto, Veloce, Saint MarcsTHANK YOU, was lookin for breakfasty joints, last time all I had was business hotel buffet breakfast (which wasn't bad at all). Noted and saved.>Dennys/etc...are these all Denny-style? Come to think of it I've never eaten in a Dennys in my entire life. My understanding is that it is similar to Waffle House, where I've eaten and hung out at a ton. Or is there something more to them? I'm actually not a huge fan of American-Style breakfast diner food at "breakfast time", love that stuff late night though.>ikinari steaklmao I remember this place, I didn't eat there, but I remember this place, their wacky ass engrish sign, one of the first things I took a picture of after checking into my hotel and stepping out to wander around in akihabara 6 years ago. Are they >nikuman/bao/assorted chinese foodwould you consider them "good as chinese food" or a "distinct and worthwhile japanese take on chinese food" (in the same sense that I'd say the US of A has worthily distinct takes on mexican or italian food)? I've had chinese food in SEA, China proper, and chinatowns across the US. I like it, but I also like hamburgers, and if I'm in a foreign land, I'd rather do their distinct stuff rather than their local rendition of my own hamburger.>hokkaido foodsI'll actually be there, sapporo ramen and gengiskhan sound great!

>>2841268>>2841250>>2841255>butter, ice cream and cakestell me more about pastries! I love melonpan, after going the first time was getting it at some local chinese grocery store weekly for a couple years before they discontinued it. Now the only time I can have melonpan is if I go to the fucking kinokuniya across from bryant park in manhattan where I do go every now and then, but it's like a whole long weekend deal, not a place I can dip on down to.>other yamagata/sendai specialties spent a lot of time in SEA (singapore mostly), had plenty of fishcakes and bean pastries. I don't hate em, but I don't love em, It's stuff I was aware of, saw and never really bothered with; in the same sense as if you see a cotton candy stand; you know what cotton candy is, it's not "bad", but you just don't really want any. Also while a lot of that does sound good, I'm wasn't planning to spend a lot of time in yamagata this time, doing hokkaido and kyoto instead. >Kyoto/Osakayeah goin there, spending a couple days n nights looking forward to it very very much, just wandering around and trying things in sight>Fukuoka/Hiroshima/Kumamoto/KagoshimaThis all sounds awesome, but regrettably, I will not be able to hit anything like this up this time. Maybe next time (southern japan + hokkaido roadtrip)?. Furthest sw I'll be staying is in namba, and not for too long (since I'm also spending some time in sapporo, and the bulk of the time in toyko hitting up old favorites and things I didn't get around to last time) >Right tons of seafood stuff like Uni (Sea Urchin). Unagi (Eel), Madai/Tai (Red Snapper),What would (You) suggest as must tries? I've had most of the standard fish at cheaper (Japanese) or swankier (American) joints.. At this point, I'd say my favorites are those really white cuts of albacore, red snapper and yellowtail. Have had a fair amount of other stuff, typical tuna, salmon, red clam, cooked eel, roe, squid, etc... common in America)
>>2841118who is she?
>>2841266>What's the deal with soba? I've actually never had it. I know they do it cold and that always seemed strange to me.It's buckwheat nooodles. They medium chew not as chewy as Udon but more chewy then even the chewiest Ramen.Soba can be hot or old when it's cold it's called Zaru Soba thats when you dip it into Mentsuyu basically Basedsauce with "spices". It can be light dark normal, theres also Sesame dips, Ume dips, Tororo aka Grated Yam dips, Yuzu Ponzu dips, and recently Curry dips into the dips people add stuff like wasabi, seaweeds, ginger, shichimi togarashi etc. Then you have Hot sobas these are usually fish brooth with toppings.Kake Soba - Basic Onions sauce fish dashi flavored sobaTsukimi soba you get a raw eggTanuki Soba you get fried tempura bitsKitsudne Soba you get fried tofu aka Aburaage Sansai Soba you get veggies It's the same thing with Udon really. Recently Curry soba is also really popular. But honeslty it can go with anything from Pork to Beef to whatever. Soba restaurants also go from super cheap to luxury tier.So in essence is it's just chewy noodles. I personally didn't like it when I tried it at first now it's probably my favorite noodle dish. Here a list of Noodle Restaurants that was the 2024 best voted by foreigners and Japanese people. Left is Japanese, right is foreigners. I google translated it but some of them fucked up Best in the work = TenkaippinDotonbori Shrne = Dotombori KamukuraMy tip is to visit these:Ichiran, Tenkaippin, Ippudo these are baseline pork bone broth ones and are fantastic. Hidakaya, Korakuen and similar to get that plain Chuka Soba (Chinese Soba what Japs called Ramen before Ramen) taste. My problem is when people hit random ramen places is you can't really judge. You don't have a baseline to compare it to but thats just me. Like if you eat at Mcdonalds and eat a Hamburger there and I then bring you to a real burger place you'll realize what a gigantic difference in quality that is.
>>2841280My first bowl of Ramen was in Odaiba, I think DiverCity. It was awful. The noodles felt raw, there was only a pathetically small slice of pork, and it just wasn't tasty overall. That almost made me never try Ramen again. But I gave it another shot in a place called Kamukura in Dottonbori. That ramen was fucking phenomenal. I ate only there for my whole stay in Osaka. So yeah, you basically have to try out other places before making a decision.
>>2841268>are these all Denny-style? Come to think of it I've never eaten in a Dennys in my entire life. My understanding is that it is similar to Waffle House, where I've eaten and hung out at a ton. Or is there something more to them? I'm actually not a huge fan of American-Style breakfast diner food at "breakfast time", love that stuff late night though. It's sort of like Waffle House yeah, the idea with Family restaurants is you get 2~4 people together and you order a lot of different foods. These are the only restauranty places in Japan where you can hang out, talk, do other stuff. A lot of people bring their kids and play with them, a lot of highschoolers go there to do homework, young peopel go there to grab something to eat a chat. Your typical one will look something like picture. A few spaces for solo or 1v1 diners and a "booths" for 4 people. The good things is most of them have gigantic english menushttps://book.saizeriya.co.jp/menu2510_e/book/https://www.skylark.co.jp/en/gusto/menu/https://www.dennys.jp/pdf/menubook-st.pdf?1029 - These guys have a good breakfast menuhttps://www.bikkuri-donkey.com/en/https://www.cocos-jpn.co.jp/menu/https://www.royalhost.jp/menu/ - No English sadly etc... Just look at the menus and see if you see some foods you'd like. They're mostly western foods with a Japanese twist. They're cheap and super popular with Japanese people. I think one of the staple foods of these places is the Japanese "Hamburger" a ground beef patty with panko and other stuff usually has some kind of filling inside. And like all the others they have tons of sesonal stuff. It's also one of the rare places where you can do a western style route of Soup > Main Meal > Desert > WineLike in Autumn it's all about Chessnuts and Yakiimo(Roasted sweet potato) in Japan. So they have like these Mont Blanc deserts and https://www.skylark.co.jp/en/gusto/menu/dessert/index.html
>>2841268>would you consider them "good as chinese food" or a "distinct and worthwhile japanese take on chinese food"I would considering the absolutely worthwhile and Japanese. If anything you can go to Family Markt, Lawson or 7-11 and try one for yourself. Usually the Kurobuta(Black Pig) man and Pizza Man are hits. But if you want the really good ones go to Osaka for 551 Hourai with a special mustard sauce that thing is a Japanese wide hit and one of the most popular souvenirs to bring back from Osaka. Or you can get the Tokyo ones called PAOPAO they're at most big stations. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U9QlvPz6iYQhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VSz16JPihkQhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d83tZozP6tQ - TV shows are made about it. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AJsvEpXqIqw - TV shows are made about it.

>>2841281Food courts aren't really the places to try good Japanese food I think you should know that lol...While there is good stuff in DiverCity and I always eat at Densetsu No Sutadon'ya after Comiket, Comitia and other events in Odaiba it's also usually not run by the best staff. You best bets are smaller stores somewhere not Touristy. Ramen is very easy to fuck up and there tons of ramen types you need to try at least 10 to see what vibes with you tastes. This is why most people recommend Ichiran because it's the most neutral and tasty and has no weird after tastes or spices or anything. I bet most people wouldn't eat Ramen if their first one was Jiro Ramen or some type of Miso Ramen. You need to find your right stock so Katsuboshi, Niboshi, Saba Bushi, Shiitake, Kombu etc. Then you need to see if you like Chintan aka Clear Soup or Paitan aka White soup aka creamy soup. Then you need to see if you like Shio, Miso or Shoyu as Tare aka "sauce"For example the default Ichiran Ramen is a Paitan Tonkotsu Ramen with Shio tare or their Spicy Store Special Tare with Thin Straight Noodles. Ramen is hard... But I'm 100% sure anyone that comes to Japan will like Ichiran, Tenkaippin, IppudoBut yeah like anon says you need to try a lot of places. If you're in Osaka Ippudo Umeda is probably your best default bet for really fucking good ramen.
>>2841271RIP
Are there any places like Japan here in America, or is this country just a fucking shithole everywhere? Japan seems so peaceful and nice.
>>2841276>What would (You) suggest as must tries?I'd go to something like one of the countless famous Sushi Chains like Hamazushi etc..They'll have you covered on most of these. You can try Kyushu Marcel, Hiroshima Oysters, Tilefish, Shrimp, Squid, Sea Urchin(Uni), Salmon Roe(Ikura), And a lot of them have meme dishes such as Wagyu Sushi.Alternatively I'd go to an upscale places that serves Kaisendon. Basically Sashimi on Rice. Here my picture from Kanazawa you basically get a bi of everything to try.Now I'm me so I have different tastes I love Ikuradon so fish eggs on rice. >tell me more about pastries! Gonna need more info on where you are. Okay so Japs really like small cakes and stuff, the shops really depends on where you are now In Tokyo Ginza Cozy Corner, Châteraisé, Morozoff, HARBS tons of others. You have in store eating but a lot of them are like take home shops too. Where you just have the cakes on display and you get what you want. Donuts are also popular with Krispy Creme, Pon de Ring, Mister Donut and so on. Now if you want cheap pastries you can go to Family restaurants everyone single one has a specialty. For example the Tiramisu from Saizeriya is really good. Then there also tons of ma and pa shops and cake places everywhere. They also make Fluffy pancakes, Jiggly Cheese cakes and so on.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=adXmM-eqwz8https://www.youtube.com/shorts/2G86ucx65goAs for the most commonly eaten deserts I'd say it's Strawberry Shortcake(Sponge Cake), right now Mont Blanc by far, Baumkuhen, Éclair and Cream Puffshttps://www.cozycorner.co.jp/product/Personally I'm a big fan of Châteraisé from Yamanashi (They in Kanto mostly)https://www.chateraise.co.jp/ec/c/ccake/https://www.chateraise.co.jp/ec/c/cchld/If you have the opportunity somehow def try something called "Shine Muscat" grapes.

>>2841297Here some examples of what I got for Halloween/Tsukimi with my friends in Châteraisé and some Pancakes from uhh Original Pancake House in Kita Senju Tokyo. There also acutal pastry shops if as in Croasants and stuff like Vie De France, Manneken (waffles), Pie Mania, Andersen, Donq these are all chians you'll find in most big cities.I don't know if you tried the one in Sendai Station called Pensée they have really good Curry Pans and these Strawberrry Cheese Rolls.

While the government is likely pressuring travel agencies and reducing permit quotas, approximately 500,000 Japan-bound flight tickets have been canceled. One hotel alone reported cancellations for 1,000 guests within the year.

Gonna be in Sapporo for a week in December, basically the 20th to the 27th. Other than drinking at Nikka Bar and doing brewery tour or whatever for Sapporo beer, what are some good spots to hit? Thinking of doing a day trip to Otaru and Jigokudani each already.Oh and is Hokkaido's December coat weather or just jacket weather? If it's like Pacific coast NA I expect it to be pretty warm, above zero but low.
>>2841431This is the chance we 3rd worlders were looking for. Black companies will request people willing to work 60 hours a week for peanuts now
>>2841250>>2841255Great lists. My background is Japanese and have been visiting pretty regularly (almost annually), and I always forget to eat 1 or 2 things during my trips. It's definitely hard to keep track, especially when you include regional spins on foods.I will always recommend unagi to someone who has never tried it, especially if they're not asian or don't like fish. I've had some people be very reluctant on trying it, but everyone ended up liking it once they gave it a chance. It definitely helps to open their mind and makes it easier to convince people to broaden their palate.I also always recommend going to a family restaurant if they've never been to one. Usually forgotten and often underrated, you can find some decent western food with a slight Japanese spin to them at a very affordable cost.

Or basically the same price with a nice river view in Hiroshima center proper? Or down to 145K for the cheap 67sqm one. Or heck, just 415K for the luxurious with kino bay view in a recent 2020 building? And it's double the square meter I actually need, if not more. Where the fuck does the "tiny japanese flats" meme even comes from, I'd have to pay double that for the same surface, let alone the view, in a similar sized city/area (tinier uninteresting cities actually). What's the catch, even the monthly provision fees for repairs and other monthly fees are not that high, and comparable to what I'd have ton pay here. Why am I not buying housing over there already? Planning on going bar hopping tonight to enjoy the last bit I have of my day off before having to go to work tomorrow. Read a review for a latin bar that the owners were pushy to get singles to dance and that shit is so funny.
“Love” hotels have so much potential for convenience now that I understand the process. why do people not really mention it as an alternative if you’re unlucky getting regular hotels? I hear net cafe’s get talked about more
>>2841485Not that a regular hotel is free from that obviously, and I know it's all psychological, but no, I won't go to sleep in what is literally a fuckroom full of sperm stains everywhere. I bet bringing in an UV light would lead to some funny discoveries.

That said, All the ramen I had in japan was "pretty damn good" relative to the kind of ramen I'm used to (Japanese joints in the US, or making it myself at home [i can get fresh ramen of all sorts, tonkatsu paste, etc... at my local chinese grocer, usually top it with some seafood or beef]) That said, everywhere I had ramen was on the cheap side, just random hole in the wall places that mostly had vending machines for tickets, that I saw and was like, yeah it's about time to eat, and just went into. I would like to try more 'fancy' places this time (only "fancy" place I ate at last time was some sushi place in some mall in sendai, which was fucking excellent) most of where I ate last time was... more in the fast food to chilis/tgi/applebees classiness level. >family restaurants ah I see, that's pretty cool, yeah I actually heard about gusto (opening early and closing late) and was meaning to check em out. >>2841435Otaru is definitely worth a visit. The streets are cobblestone and covered with ice in winter so bring decent shoes and expect to slip if you're not used to ice. I saw so many people fall on their arses while I was there. Jigokudani is great too. Try and get a day pass to one of the onsens there if you can. Bathing outdoors during winter is an experience that cant be beat. One of my best memories of all my Japan trips has been bathing outdoors while it was snowing. Absolute kino. You could also hike Mt Moiwa. Its very close to Sapporo city centre and gives you great views of the city. It will be covered in snow that time of year but its fine, I went in January and there were old grannies climbing it. Its a pretty easy walk, just make sure you have some good water proof shoes because the snow will be up to your shin.
>>2841499Donuts will be donuts you're not going to miss much. It's more visual. You'll find omurice in a lot of restaurants, it's kind of a common food just like donburi. >>2841506Also to note a lot of the Jigokudani aka Noboribetsu Onsens are Hotel Onsens, so you can't just show up and take a bath, usually you need a room. You need to look for a rotenburo 露天風呂 or 野天風呂And add Yukimi so it's a Snow Open Bath 雪見露天風呂They're actually quite hard to find for cheap as big open air ones. Usually they'll offer private baths with rooms.Stuff like https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eOQRaobirMU
>>2841435>>2841506>>2841509One of my bucket list items last time I was in Sapporo was also trying to be in an open-air onsen during while it was snowing. I was not in Hokkaido for very long, so I couldn't make my way all the way out to Jigokudani, so instead I took a bus to Jouzankei at night which is in the valley. Wasn't too hard to find a few day trip onsen / sentou there. Yu no Hana sentou stays open pretty late and has an outdoor section facing the mountains.
I'd love to do 3-4 days hike on Hokkaido with my tent, can't be harder than the Alps (the original Alps), but I'm too much of a pussy over bears. I don't live in the US or in Japan, the worst encounter I can make here is some angry goat defending her offspring, or some boar, or a mythical wolf.>Japan's Environment Ministry says 88 people were attacked by bears across the nation in October alone, with seven of the victims dying. That's the worst figure for any month in the past decade.>The ministry also says that from April to the end of October, 12 people were killed and 184 were injured.
>>2841521I did Nakasendo last week and the constant bear warnings made me jumpy at every sound
>>2841431>Wait, Japan is adopting a 4 day work week?Where did you hear this?Do they expect companies to raise hourly wages to compensate or...?Because if they just change the 'expected' number of days but not the pay, it'll effectively not change at all as people "voluntarily" take on more work to make ends meet
I read somewhere that you need a passport valid for six months to enter Japan. Is this true? Mine is valid for the entirety of my trip but not six months and I'm starting to get worried. I keep reading conflicting info about this. Some pages mention it, others say it's not a requirement anymore. My country doesn't need a visa to enter Japan, can I just go with my passport if it hasn't expired yet? Please help or I'm gonna die
>>2841488Do you really think the sheets, pillows, and blanket covers at love hotels aren't changed or washed after the previous guests, and the rooms aren't cleaned? That would totally ruin the mood for people who want to use them for sex in a romantic setting. Or do you have a fetish for splattering semen all over the room? If so, I'd rather not stay in a room you've used, even if it's a three-star hotel.
>>2841534Passport being valid for 6 months is standard procedure to enter every country, whether it's enforced or not it depends on the mood of the customs guy, I suppose.
Why do I see Japanese here in my age range (late 20s to mid 30s) with terrible teeth problems? I dont mean crooked teeth, like yellow and infected teeth especially after the canines.
>>2841485>>2841488There have been times where I had gotten too drunk to want to walk back to my hotel or even use a taxi where I’d stumble into a love hotel for a safe place to crash while drunk. Id pay for the longest hours possible or the overnight price. Morning after I would clear the free waters and snacks and make my way back to my real hotel for a shower and nap.Tldr; dont be afraid of love hotels for an easy way to sleep when in a bind

If you see something you are sure is a steal go for it)As far as places to avoid, don't go to Asakusa in Tokyo and don't go to Fushigi Inari shrine in Kyoto. Fucking awful places chockfull of tourists, and the attractions are extremely lame.
>>2841597Understandable. I'm here for a year and I've yet to take any classes so my Japanese currently extends to kudasai, arigato, gomen and that's about it. Meanwhile the internet told me I would die without knowing the language before I got here.
>>2841599>>2841600Have you ever dropped a raw egg into instant ramen noodles after taking them off the heat?
>>2841604There appears to be a significant gender gap in Japanese language proficiency. Women often show considerable improvement within a year, and it's common for some to reach near-native fluency within a few years. This is likely because they frequently hang out and socialize with Japanese people.
>>2841605I was never an instant ramen person desu
>>2841602Weird, I'm also on a 21 day trip leaving today.I used my spare shoes when I didn't want to go to a fancy place with my very dirty comfort shoes, but I agree.Kanazawa is worth 2 days because one of them I got lucky with Cultural Festival, which was awesome.Always trust NAVITIME, even if it seems crazy. I had problems with trains twice, and only because I dust trust it. Signs on train stations are EXTREMELY useful, read them.Magome and Tsumago are shit, the Nakasendo walk itself is very good.Agreed on Asakusa.Fushimi Inari is good but only because I fucked up and climbed the mountain on a trail, not by stairs.

That's with all the Christmas Markets in Fukuoka? At first I thought it was just one but I kept finding more and more of then. Seems like they are all sponsored by a different company and they compete to be the best one or something. Is this just a Fukuoka thing or does it happen in other cities? This is the first time ive been to Japanel near Christmas (even though its still November...)

My biggest Japan travel fear is getting too used to being naked in a communal setting due to hotel communal baths, then getting really drunk one night, getting naked in my room and walking out into the hallway and getting into the elevator, then being trapped outside my room naked because I don't have my room key card. Anyone else worry about this or is it just me?

>>2841634Which one was it? The ones I've been to (Umeda/Nipponbashi in Osaka, Shibuya/Nakano Broadway in Tokyo) all had entire floors stacked with hentai doujinshi and JAV/gravure stuff. Then there's other stores like the Surugaya in Nipponbashi which has the top floor dedicated to adult media, not to mention the usual "DVD stores" you find all over the place (including literally three doors next to the Mandarake there, pic related was a "horry gacha" they had in front kek). Nakano Broadway had at least one other adult store I spotted, selling onaholes and dakis and the like as well as JAVs.So yes, this shit is everywhere, don't be willfully ignorant.

I was actually surprised how easily accessible all of this shit is, like it's not even hidden behind clear 18+ signage or anything. Compared to last time I went in 2019 I personally don't see that much difference, but I don't buy porn so maybe I just notice the specifics less. For niche stuff obviously Akihabara is still gonna have a lot, but for me I much prefer Osaka since it's less crowded and cheaper. Nipponbashi has tons of second hand stores you can make some good finds, but visual novels aren't my area of expertise so while I did see a whole lot of those I don't know if it's the ones you're looking for specifically.>>2841680Beautiful shot

Both cities are good in their own right, but there's a distinct difference in energy when you compare them. To put it into perspective, I came to Japan just to relax and chill for a couple days before I go back home for Thanksgiving.
>>2841813>Go to Seoul(Sovl) if you're looking for raw 2000s atmosphere and social connectionsI've noticed from my research that Seoul/Taipei/Bangkok more closely resemble the '2000s Japan' that I'm looking for than Tokyo does but I can't put into words why
>>2841727>Can you get it without making reservations months in advance and paying hundreds of dollars?Considering that I can buy Wagyu in my own country right off a supermarket shelf at 1900 yen equivalent for a ~170g steak (11,300 yen per kg), it's clearly not an ultra premium delicacy.Sure my Wagyu isn't from Japan literally but it's the same breed of cow and if the meat was actually absurdly expensive then you wouldn't price it so cheap given how much the cow would have cost to import and raise.
>>2841817For lack of a better term, the cities you mentioned are "grittier" and tend to embrace it. Case in point, I took this picture last year in Taipei. Urban cities in Japan are actively trying to sanitize any semblance of disorder or grime (street vendors, graffiti, old buildings, unenforced parking, etc) while also demolishing iconic 2000s landmarks like the rooftop soccer field in Shibuya and the giant Alta TV sceen in Shinjuku. The same thing is happening to Hong Kong post-handover with the ongoing eradication of their neon lights. It's erosion of cultural identity for the sake of corporate greed and "modern global standards".

Maybe $65k for a tiny shoebox apartment (19m^2) in a dorm in the city was the best I found but it was basically the size of a room in a business hotel like APA. First thing I could find that actually seemed to come with land was $200k in the middle of nowhere. 20 mins from the city, with land, I could easily see most boomerjews trying to get $400k+ out of you

>>2841820That's very sad to hear. FWIW I was taking a walk through the central/normie entertainment district in my city the other day and thought to myself 'this is basically Tokyo but without Japanese language'When researching scenes/things to do I've also found that Seoul/Taipei/Bangkok feel younger and more dynamic, the scenes over there aren't always the biggest or most established but there's loads of young people trying to build something meaningful. Whereas everything I've found in Tokyo is people in their 30s (late 20s absolute youngest) and they're good at what they do and there's a lot to do but everything feels very organised and set in stone, not spontaneous enough for me desu. Did young people in Tokyo stop going outside or something?
>>2841919I was I Taipei a couple of weeks ago, it felt very geriatric. They have the same demographic issues Japan has, their fertility rate is like .73 or something and they have a way lower population. The young people all complain that all the housing is owned by 80 year old aunties who have 10 properties in their portfolio. At least Japan has cheap housing even if they have no wage growth.
>>2841929Yeah Japan and Korea have those shoebox rooms you can get for mad cheap, though idk how much of that is open to foreigners due to xenophobe landlords etcAnother reason why I like the look of Buenos Aires so much, loads of young people doing things and there's not the xenophobia/language barrier to the same degree as Asia

>Chinese travelers have canceled more than half a million plane tickets to Japan since Saturday. Chinese students there have been told to be careful. Two Japanese films have been pulled from the Chinese box office. Ships are patrolling in disputed waters. State-affiliated academics are warning that the entire country of Japan could be turned into a “battlefield.” And now, China has suspended imports of Japanese seafood.Well, it's all theater and nothing ever happens, BUT it's still escalating. Half a million tourists not coming is great, BUT let's make it go higher.
>>2841708>>2841712I've had some unagi at restaurants in Toronto and you can tell the difference in texture, far more chewy/rubbery from what I've experienced. Had some ready made frozen ones from supermarkets and they had the same texture. So yeah, it's probably due to the fact that it's often properly grilled if you get some in Japan. In terms of taste, haven't found any here that tasted as good as the stuff I've had in Japan. Nothing bad or anything, but I've had some that had a more "fishier" taste to them. I think it's a common thing if it isn't fresh, so some places try to cover it up with just adding a lot of sauce.
>>2842009I really have to force myself to eat though. I have a hotel breakfast around 9, lunch around 2-3 and I end up not having dinner til around 10... I was in Europe for a month earlier this year and I lost two much weight just because I couldn't be bothered making the effort to find somewhere to eat. I was walking everywhere and eating a croissant for breakfast and some light meal for dinner.
>>2842000I heard about the bamboo trees but what happened in/to Gion? >>2842009I lose weight on all of my trips to Asia. Part of it is jetlag making me lose my appetite for a week or so, but also like you said, I'm just too busy to eat. Plus most things in Japan are fairly light, like sushi or teishoku. I'm only gonna get ramen or katsu or something heavy like that once a day at most, and I either don't snack or the snack replaced a whole meal (like 1-2 famichiki and an onigiri for lunch).
I lose weight just because I walk all day. Same happens when I travel somewhere else, Italy, whatever. It's not specific to Japan.Would happen all the same if I simply decided to walk like 1h a day everyday even near my home. It's incredible how just walking efficiently makes you lose weight. No need to do dumb traction or pulling weights shit or whatever gym scam. Just plain walking. Just going out with a (real) camera will make you lose weight over time.
>>2841727>>2841818Also keep in mind that there are different grades of wagyu, so you can certainly find affordable options out there. The only thing I would be a little hesitant to go to are yakiniku places, specifically ones with the "all you can eat" deals. I've been to one that charged by the plate and that one was perfectly fine, but with the all you can eat one it was VERY noticeable that it was at the low end in terms of quality. I've had street food wagyu skewers that were far better than it.
Should I try to stick with a backpack and carry on? Or just get a bigger checked bag and maybe a second if I need it?

>>2842041I guess it really depends what you want and what you're willing to pay.As I've mentioned, I've had wagyu skewers at a food market (forget which one) and thought it was considering that it was under a 1000 yen.I've had Hida beef sushi in Takayama which you order and eat on the street, and I thought that was really good and from what I remember was only a few 100 yen more than the skewer.I've had wagyu burgers twice in Japan, and though I thought they were great, I'm not sure I'd really recommend eating it that way. Like you could probably tell the patty tastes and feels a bit different compared to a normal burger, but you may not know it was made of wagyu unless you were told it was.Had some at a yakiniku place in Osaka. Obviously cost more than a typical yakiniku meal and wasn't all you can eat, but I thought it tasted great and pretty sure it was still under 10,000 yen. Personally felt it was well worth it.Had some Kobe beef at a teppanyaki place at Kobe station. Unfortunately can't remember how much I paid for the meal, especially because I'm sure I had the lunch menu so it was probably on the affordable side. And personally I think teppanyaki might be the best way to enjoy wagyu in terms of quality and value. But of course, best to do some research before choosing which restaurant to go to.But if you're willing to splurge, I'd highly suggest it since it was easily the best experience I've had with wagyu. This was almost a decade ago, but I had a meal at Kaeseki 511 in Tokyo that had 7 course meal that served their wagyu in various different ways. I'm not suggesting you have to go to this specific restaurant, but you can definitely tell the difference in taste and quality if you pay for it.

Last time we visited Japan we were lost for half a day just within the station, it's truly something else, and I'm saying this as a very experienced traveler. On top of the Escher-esque architecture of the place, you also have the fact that Shinjuku locals are busy AF and will often feign a lack of knowledge to avoid talking to strangers; you'll feel this when you eventually need to ask someone for directions, that's for sure. In that case station staff or policemen are your best bet, they take their jobs extremely seriously and will go to extreme lengths to help you. Knowing some Japanese will make it a lot easier though.

Do these counts actually ever interact with Japanese culture or do they just choose thr most western thing to do in a city, hand around and be loud, then go back to the hotel because half an hour of walking made them tired and they need a nap? God they piss me off.
>>2842417>Do these counts actually ever interact with Japanese culture or do they just choose thr most western thing to do in a cityThe modern traveler is living on a budget of little time or money and thus their focus is entirely on extracting the most 'value' from their trip. Only the safest choices for locales and activities, the best rated touristslop so they can hopefully return home without regrets.
>>2842426I could believe this if it wasn't specifically American Boomers who are extremely cashed up. I see American millennial and zoomers just walking around exploring the city and interfacing with reality. I don't think it has anything to do with boomers not having enough money. I think maybe they just came in on a cruise ship and did some package tour that went to that specific location at that time. They were so annoying though. One old lady was yelling at her companion to stop taking pics of the giant koi because 'we have fish at home'

I got fooled into going to Misumi West Port. UNESCO Industrial World Heritage Site my ass, it’s literally just a rest stop with a good view and a few cafes operating out of the historic buildings. Walking there from the station isn’t even comfy because you’re on a narrow sidewalk next to a busy road and there’s no crosswalk on the pedestrian side so once I finally got there I had to run across and hope truck-kun wasn’t coming around the blind corner.
I need to stop going out walking on a Saturday night the Japanese get crazy when they are drunk. My eating times have shifted dramatically and now I'm not hungry for dinner til 10. Try to go to shinshin, theres like 30 people waiting. Go to Yakiniku like and its past last order and the angry man gives me the X sign without saying anything. Now I'm depressed and in my hotel eating ice cream and drinking beer.
CHOYA Brandy Ume Highball is fucking amazing if I could get this back home I'd drink it every night.

>>2842258>so it's not like I don't have an interest in the countryIt struck me, the other day. Not unusual, I keep going back to Japan (way too much) because of this. There are a shitload of countries I should visit for their landscapes or old cities or whatever that genuinely look interesting. The landscapes of Scotland or New Zealand, the majestic mountains of the Himalayas, the old Peruvian stones, the end of the world through the Land of Fire. And yet, I just keep going back to Japan instead of discovering the world. And while I enjoy each trip, none reaches the heights of the very first one I did over there. I feel like I'm wasting opportunities, yet I can't bring myself to visit the other countries precisely because I lack a connection with the culture.

>>2841919If I was in your situation, I would honestly just try to find the cheapest monthly apartment in Bangkok, network with other expats, and do weekend trips to other places in Asia to gauge which vibe suits you the most long-term. Personally, I liked the energy of Seoul, Hanoi, & Shenzhen + Hong Kong the most. I still like Tokyo, but the sense of discovery is diminished a lot because of how comprehensively documented everything is in Japan at this point. As for the current scene in Tokyo, it's insular and organized probably for the sake of security I'm assuming. People in other countries can easily develop large subculture scenes organically because they don't have to worry about a million vloggers trying to film and expose it for the next "I saw [THING] in JAPAN that you've NEVER heard of!!!" YouTube video. The problem with visiting Japan now is that people tend to treat it as a dick measuring contest to see who can find the latest hidden gem or who can have the most unique and original experience to distinguish themselves from the tourist hordes who follow the usual itineraries. You see this online with all of the constant "x place is overrun with tourists, where are the authentic neighborhoods in Tokyo now" posts which just leads to a constant cycle of gentrification and exodus of whatever made that particular neighborhood special in the first place. The key is just finding a balance of visiting popular places while also researching unique places you can have a personal connection to. The best Japan trip I had was the first one where I just shut my brain off and did the generic tourist route while the culture shock was still fresh in my mind. >vid related: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oggHwb13Yrs>>2842664gigachad offspring

Went to a popup museum at a mall today. Along the way I passed by a brand new gym that just opened this month, hardly a soul inside despite it being a fairly big city at 1 PM on a holiday. The few people that were there were (actual) boomers walking at 0.5 speed on the treadmills. Went to the museum where I saw a bunch of brats running wild including one boy that was banging on a bunch of exhibit cases, I was pretty annoyed but then a random woman caught him by the wrist and yelled at him to stop, the boy’s mother came running over apologizing profusely. Made me lol, in America something like that would definitely lead to a fight if not a shooting/stabbing. What an interesting country.
>>2842935Gym culture is not big in Japan at all. They generally don't need to to keep fit as they walk everywhere, and bodybuilding isn't big here at all. I can't articulate what I want and I also have psoriasis which causes flakes and red and scalpy areas on my head (covered a lot by my semi-long hair) I just want like 2 inches taken off and that's it. I'm not only gonna be a gaijin that can't speak, but I'm gonna be a nasty one with a ton of flakes and dandruff coming off my head. What a life I live
>>2843525The top-tier soaplands in Yoshiwara cost around $500. Savor moments of pure bliss.
>>2843527Please specify the length in centimeters, as inches are not used in Japan.
>>2843527Just google translate bro
>>2843528Yoshiwara is fucking grim, lived two minutes from there for one month, and even the soaplands from Kabukicho didn't give such a gloomy vibe with all the yaks, black cars waiting for their clients and gross salarymen looming around.Creepy place.

>>2843579I spent some time with a girl in Beppu and told her that the only reason I would want to go to Tokyo was to check out Yoshiwara, she said “you should probably call ahead to make sure whatever shop you’re interested in will even let you in.” Apparently despite the fame/notoriety it’s not a tourist friendly place at all, at least that’s the impression I got from her, she said she never worked there but that’s the vibe she got.
>>2843595It's not friendly at all. Foreigners and women are frowned upon, I was eye tracked by the fags waiting for clients the few times I passed through to buy groceries. Shops are full closed behind ridiculous names and women might as well not exist. The few girls I saw there who were on break looked tired as fuck and lifeless. Creepy as fuck place.
>>2843619>women are frowned uponhuh?designated fag containment zone or something?
>>2843621Not as extreme as Tobita for example where women not working there will literally get yelled at and kicked out, but they're not welcomed at all, even though there's a women only hotel there, plus a discount market.

Anyone got experience using a Wise card in Japan? Lots of people seem to like it, and the rates seem good.
Anyone been to the buff girl cafe in Tokyo
>>2843776Just hearing of such a ban now. Any other details?
>>2843816Currently, the Chinese government has only officially announced to its citizens, “Do not travel to Japan.”In response, Chinese airlines appear to have suspended flights to Japan, though it's unclear if this is true.Another thought occurred to me: Could it be that discounted airfares are available for flights from the EU and other regions to Japan via China?
What e sim card yall use when you go? Last time I went was before I had a phone that had Esim or Esim wasn't even around, and I ended up doing some really jank "bring along an old phone, get a simcard for it that I picked up at the airport alongside my JRpass(back when it wasn't a ripoff), keep that old sim'd phone on me all day (plugged into a powerbank) and have that shit in wifi tethering mode all day that my newer phone would be connected to" Because I didn't want to yank the physical sim from my 'active' phone so I could still make phone calls with my regular number etc... it was a whole thingbut now I hear there's E-sims, seen many different options while looking at assorted touristy websites, even the abroad in japan youtube guy is apparently shilling his own brand now

Do you have any recommendations for group tours or workshops you participated in during your trip to Japan?
>>2843827Flying to Japan via Incheon with Korean Air or Asiana Airlines is about 30% cheaper than direct flights to Japan. Additionally, Incheon offers extensive free domestic tours for transit passengers. This strategy aligns the interests of airlines seeking to capture passenger demand for Japan with the Korean government's goal of boosting visitor numbers to Korea.

Ten years ago, we could stroll leisurely through Kyoto.
>>2843989Yeah well except not really. Pic I took in May 2014. But it felt more Japanese and less Chinese, that's for sure.
>>2843838>We must somehow cover the losses from the cancellations. The government's order is strictly for “Chinese travel to Japan”; foreigners are not affected.Wouldn't a Chinese-run airline think this way?

>>2844304>He seems quite knowledgeable about Asians, able to tell Chinese, Korean, and Taiwanese people apart, but he doesn't seem very familiar with Westerners.Westerners struggle to tell apart Asians due to their very similar hair/skin/eye colours, which is what Europeans have relied on for thousands of years, while Asians focus on the shape of facial features. For similar reasons, Asians struggle with European faces.EVERYONE can identify an American by their waistline.

>>2844333Fuck man, I'm in the same boat. I feel you.I have a solo trip in Tokyo for just under 5 weeks next Tuesday and I've never done anything like this. Japan is probably the only place I've had an interest in visiting and its weighing on me on what the fuck I'm going to do. While I'm not a social sperg, I do find it difficult to just talk to people that I don't know at all.>>2844340Is there anything you or others would recommend while at a bar? Perhaps specifically cocktail bars if you're by yourself. I couldn't give two fucks about trying to pick up girls, but I really do want to enjoy the culture of going into random bar and having a drink and chatting shit. Where I am from, things are very clique'y and its very rare to start talking to groups or people you don't know.
>>2844433my best cocktail bar tip is to be genuinely interested in the place you are in, weather it is the drinks, music, decor or whatever and start discussing with the bar staff. This will either lead to them introducing you to the regulars or making other reccomendationsI showed an interest last night in the calvados the barman had, as I paid my bill, he treated me to a taste of this very rare one and then gave me directions to a fun club around the corner
>>2844433>>2844333same boat as you anons. Planning a solo trip... never been on a solo trip before. Though I am a bit of a social sperg
>>2844439>>2844433>>2844333do you have an understanding of when someone clearly does or doesn’t want to speak to you? that’s probably the most important skill, being able to dip out of a chat you aren’t entirely welcome in makes it far less pressure to start talking. Have a book or notepad with you so you can go back to doing ‘something’ other than staring into space/at your phone.the next skill is being able to be genuinely interested in what the other person is talking about - let their words and the picture of what they are painting wash over you, this will help you formulate good responses and questions.finally, be charming, pay compliments, express joy at the place you are in and your love for travelling through the country
>>2844457>>2844438For me personally, my biggest issue is just the ice break in these types of settings. Personally I can carry a conversation for however long, but just starting it, thats the real killer. I appreciate all advice though. My last question & perhaps more Tokyo specific. Can you get away with talking English in most bars to people, I know some perhaps basic phrases & some very basic sentences. However past that carrying a conversation in moon runes would be next to impossible for myself.
>>2844494yes, speak english. I visit often and can’t say more than the basic, they will take a little warming up to be confident in their english so the first few exchanges will be stiffer than you are used to, this is not them being rude or uninterested

You buy the barman a drink, and you've instantly made a friend, I got chatting every night to the staff/other patrons dropping this line and I barely knew a lick beyond some basic duolingo level stuff about where I was from.
