Say konnichiwa in the morning and konbanwa at night.
Introduce yourself with Watashi wa anon-kun desu, yoroshiku and bow politely and people will be much more receptive. Remember to always say arigato gozaimazu after someone helps you out
>>
>he didnt prep like I told anons in the japan general
>anons laughed at me for over prepping
Oh man dude, time to salvage this. Time to lock yourself inside your hotel for two days and do full time prepping by watching the youtube "things to know and do in japan" slop.
Are you in tokyo? If you need to cheer up, take a boat to odaiba and do whatever you find interesting on google maps. get some pancakes at the egg's n things restaurant in the evening and enjoy the view. Catch the life size gundam show between 19:00-21:30. Then take the train back.
>>
>>2842689
You'll just have to find the most tourist packed area nearby so they at least don't reasonably expect you to know the usual customs right off the bat, and maybe see other english speakers to greet and ask for recommendations. That what I would do. I can relate to not wanting to cause trouble or offend and leave a bad impression. Yes it doesn't matter but the psychological damage is very real.
>>
>>2842689
>I'm stuck here for 12 more daus what do I do
Whatever you planned to come here for in the first place. Now that you're presumably settled at your accommodation, just go out to all the tourist sites you planned to see and just explore the area.
>>
>>2842689
>waaaah nobody is giving me special attention! how can I just wander around doing my own thing and getting ignored by everyone, it's unbearable!
IDK what fantasy you had in your head when you planned your trip, but that's what East Asia is like. They don't need you in their country, and they don't really want you around either. Deal with it.

>>failing at Japan, the easy mode of travel destinations
You'll have to be intentionally sabotaging yourself to achieve this.
I am being absolutely serious here, stay there for your remaining 12 days and try to successfully follow your itinerary. If the entire trip is nothing but failure - you've at least tried and failed. Give up now and all you come away with it is the surrender.

yeah, first time solo travel is rough

the first vacation I went solo
I had fucking anxiety just walking on busy streets
genuinely thought people would judge me for "walking alone" kek

it gets better anon!

>try to book a group tour (in your case probably something like a ramen tasting tour) for tomorrow
helps with the loneliness
everyone will speak English (only tourists do that)
and other people are pretty talkative

>go to one of the museums
pick one topic you like, history is usually pretty interesting for everyone
it's a "lonely" activity, but interesting and you get out doing something
>visit temples / shrines
gets you through the city while having to do something

>go to a manga cafe
again lonely, but gets you doing something
obviously only if you like manga

>book some workshop
like calligraphy
similar to the food tours, you get to talk to people, without needing to do anything
>>
lol if you’re gonna be a solocel at least go to a country that speaks your language dumbass
>>
>>2842786
>at least go to a country that speaks your language
why though?

what skills do you suddenly lose just because you
re alone?
i'd argue, going somewhere you don't speak the language is even better for first time solo travelers, because you HAVE to make an effort
>>
>>2842787
Humans prospered by forming tribes, not going off as lone wolves. With very few exceptions, you’re always better off traveling to a new area with other people
>>
>>2842689
Dude, go home, you clearly are not meant to travel if you are having all these problems. Take up a different past time instead because solo travel is not for you.
>>
>>2842791
>Humans prospered by forming tribes
you're on vacation, not living like this full time anon

modern life took all difficulties that would challenge your brain
you somehow have to replicate that

also no one is telling you to stay alone
solo travel is as much about meeting new people as it is about actually being solo
those fleeting connections, that sometimes grow to more, are a lot of what makes solo traveling so great

>you’re always better off traveling to a new area with other people
and I disagree

for me it's actually the opposite
because going to the same place twice solo kinda defeats some of the purpose of going solo
while going known places with family/friends adds a new layer so the place is enjoyable again

Even vending machine food isn't safe. I got an onigiri once on my first trip and I had no idea how to open it so I just ripped it open and I fucked it entirely up. All the while some japanese school girls were staring at me laughing.

I don't understand how people have anxiety over just getting around the city. Like have you literally never gone outside in your hometown either?

If anything should give you anxiety and make you feel like shit, it's going out to try and nightlife alone. That's horrible. But just going out to the city for tourist sites and restaurants? That shit's easy
>>
>>2842689
The exact same thing happened to me in Bangkok, here's how to solve it:
>enter google maps
>type "what to see in tokyo" or wherever you are
>a bunch of pointers should pop up
>arrange them in an order that would be comfortable for you to walk from one to the other
This process is called building an itinerary. If you're not one of these people who can just go anywhere and blend in with people right away and start conversation like it was nothing and always have something to do, then it's essential for you. Try to put some mountains or hiking trails in there, those are really nice.

I went to Japan solo. My first train trip in Tokyo made me scared as hell. Then, once I got used to it, I went to Akibahara, bought an Iori figurine and some souvenirs. I came back another day, did more shopping and found an Aoba Suzukaze nendoroid is some random store, which was a miracle. Nobody judged me, staff always asked if I wanted it tax free, if I wanted a bag, and somehow I understood all of it. What a fantastic trip.

>>2842848
When I went years ago I was fat, like 260lbs I'd say, and I only recall some young guy walking past me and saying "Go Yankee!" or something. I'm not from the US, thought it was a funny remark, lol. I doubt you'll be any more clowned on than at home, people don't care.

>first time solo travel is rough
I don't understand this. I spent 3 months in Japan my first doing international travel alone and had the time of my life. I find most other people fucking annoying and unless you are travelling with another weeb it would probably be more of a pain in the ass.
>>
>>2842891
>I spent 3 months in Japan my first doing international travel alone and had the time of my life.
you're really more the exception here

you seem to be comfortable being alone for long periods of time
which not everyone is
and if you're not good at socializing and extroverted, that's a problem (which I guess applies to most people here)

if you never went out yourself to try make friends with strangers
that's extremely intimidating
even more so in a foreign country
but it gets easier and natural after the first few times

also traveling alone means, you HAVE to do the whole itinerary yourself
you have to contemplate what YOU want
if you always just went with other peoples suggestion before, you'll struggle hard

it's not that you cannot have a good time as first time solo traveler
but for me it was a lot of "personal growth" in a very, very short time
and I was miserable for the whole first 2 weeks

got a laugh outta this, sorry anon. its probably too late for advise, but I can give my two cents.
>dont know how to talk to anyone
at some point your going to have to learn to say "no speako japo" and then claim your nationality language with a smile. if you do so nicely I garentuee there will be people who will be willing to help. i mean out of all places you go, most japanese SHOULd know english some.
>everyone appears cold
so would I if you caught me during life or work. just like everyone has been saying IIT, just suck it up and plan ahead. its nerve wracking, but you'll get more help than you think even with the crippling anxiety you have anon.
>>
>>2842689
>>get extreme anxiety trying to get food, only been eating out of vending machines

A lot of restaurants have tablets at your table to order food. The only time you really need to talk to someone is when you first come in to be seated, and as long as you're in a touristy city/spot you can get by with broken English.

Are you not able to sleep because of jetlag? If so, best to tough it out and go out and do stuff during the day so your body can adjust to the time difference.
>>
>>2843012
>jetlag? if so, best to tough it out.
can vouch for this 100% it will help knock anyone out at the correct time if you wait it out until the first night you can get some real Z's. for anyone doing this be careful not to make any decisions without thinking twice because the sleepiness will slow your thinking down! trust me, been there done that..

looks like OP is done for though, still there OP? did the vending machine sushi get you i'll?

I'm 32 days into my 40 day trip so far, first time traveling solo

Normally I'm an extreme shutin who never goes outside for weeks at a time, but being in Japan I have the constant nagging need to go outside and make the most of things when in all reality all I would love to do is just stay inside on my computer doing things I want to do like study/practice/vidya
I've probably made like 20 trips to Aki so far and keep finding cool things every time I go and my suitcase is stuffed to the brim with figgies

I'm part Jap so the culture was already ingrained into me and I've been studying Jap for the past 8 months or so as prep for this so while I'm very basic beginner still, its enough to get by with simple phrases and communication good enough to bridge the gap and have a somewhat conversation with someone who barely speaks english at a bar and his friends

At this point I think I've just run out of things to do or motivation to do them
I've rented a motorcycle and ridden around the countryside, mainly only been in Tokyo however, but the urge to spread out of here isn't too strong since I'm so used to cities, next trip I'll plan for it but when I did plan to go with a friend who lives here I got super sick.

I decided to relinquish myself from the chains of self-judgement and fully embrace weebhood and have gone to Mogra multiple nights and had an absolute blast just chilling out and listening to AniSon DJs all night

Find something you like and just go to it anon who cares what other people think

Also please if any anons have any ideas for things to do to kill the remaining 7-8 days in Tokyo please I beg you give me recommendations the urge to stay inside and play VNs all day is taking over and the only other thing in my head I can think of is more Aki/Nakano trips while I still can
>>
>>2843125
>any ideas for things to do to kill the remaining 7-8 days in Tokyo
Did you spend 32 days in Tokyo so far?
I know Tokyo is huge but with that much time for a trip I would have thrown in at least some basic Osaka/Kyoto sloptourism time.
>>
>>2843152
I'll get them on the next time
I was supposed to go with friends who live here but I got super sick, and the thought of spending 300+ for just a day trip or a couple days and hotel for a rushed throwtogether plan just doesnt seem super appealing
>>
>>2843125
what VNs are ya playing anon
if I was totally out of shit to do in japan i'd probably do some of the 'visit the irl location of something featured in an anime i like pilgrimage' shit i've seen others do sometimes
i remember seeing some 'japan is finished muh overtourism' bait post a while ago because of a sign near some place from Bocchi telling tourists to behave themselves lol

At least eat at Matsuya's. You order at a touch screen machine(you can switch it to an English menu) then get a ticket with a number. Your number will be called and shown on a screen when your food is ready.

Starting Chaos;Head Noah, I got Lunatranslator to work so I'm using it as JP practice for reading and studying
I already did most of my pilgrimages aside from the really far ones for the animes I don't care THAT much about
Yeah the 'ree overtourism' is completely overblown for the most part, theres definitely some areas where it feels like the doomers are right, but mainly just because those are areas to avoid in the first place anyways
Wondered why everyone was constantly bitching about Niggerians even though I hadn't even seen a single one until I went to Kabukicho, but its a shit place to be anyways so I couldnt care less
Kept hearing giga doomers about the pajeets taking over, barely ever saw any until I went near university campuses or some menial jobs like 7/11 cashier or back-of-house cook
Did go to a club though that was 'underground' vibes, aside from the people working there I was the only asian there surrounded by giga ytpepo with some of them just bumping and grinding and making out on the dance floor and I just 360x180'd out and never looked back
Other than those small isolated highlights its pretty much completely fine

>>2843180
I spent the majority of my life hiding my powerlevel and not enjoying what i wanted to because i was afraid of embarrassing myself
Fuck that
I WILL purchase thousands of dollars of waifus and merch
I WILL go to Mogra for the 6th time
I WILL wear my MyDressUpDarlingAhegao sweater, anime shirt, and happi (with the sweater insideout on the train ride over because i dont want to be inconsiderate)
I WILL bring my anime waifu towel
I WILL join the JPs in overexcited glowstick dances when our favorite songs come on
And there isnt a single thing you can do to stop me

First, sleep. You will waste the rest of your trip if you are sleepy everywhere you go.

Go to Japan-Guide and look up wherever you're at. Look for tourist spots and experiences. Go to the itinerary tabs if you don't particularly have a strong opinion after going through the common places.

If you're in Tokyo, then it is extremely English friendly. If not, then use Google Translate or DeepL. Convenience stores and large Chains such as Gyudon stores Matsuya, Sukiya, and Yoshinoya are all fairly English friendly.

To be fair, the area has changed quite a bit over the years. I don't think it's bad as say Harajuku, but the influx of tourists and crackdowns by the government and businesses to clean up its image has changed it to appeal more to the general public, losing it's niche image and appeal.

With that said though, at least buying goods has become fairly easier, specifically if it's something mainstream or currently popular. Like instead of wasting time and effort at a ufo/claw machine, I simply went to a "used figure" section of a store and just bought what I wanted. Probably far quicker and cheaper to do so.
>>
>>2843454
yeah they just opened a brand new massive clawgame building right on aki's main street with like 7 floors

Why do people do this? I get it if you're some normie social media traveler, but you sound like you'd be at least adjacent to weebs so I don't know what your angle is for visiting Japan where you wouldn't be at least semi-fluent from watching anime and listening to idol groups.
