The problem is I’m hiding my real net worth from her and her family (for obvious reasons), but now they’re getting suspicious about how I can fund my lifestyle here (and my house/car in America) but “can’t” pay dowry yet. Her father is acting like dowry is owed immediately and told her to move back home if I don’t pay. She’s mad at me and even blames me for ever meeting her dirt poor family because “that’s why this problem started.”

So now it’s turned into a mess where they want the money now, she’s getting pressured by them, and I’m basically stuck being the bad guy because I won’t hand over cash on demand. All of this could've been avoided if I hadn’t agreed to dowry early on before I knew how things really worked. T_T

She's a great woman otherwise but all of this is starting to feel highly transactional. Should I just cut my losses?

Cham-am is just up the road from Hua Hin. It's a relatively small beach area, with a limited selection of restaurants and shops.

Hua Hin has a lot more going on, and south of there is Kui Buri National Park, where you can go and see elephants and Khao Sam Roi Yot National Park is worth visiting too.

Cha Am is mostly just a place to relax and chill by the pool (the sea is pretty polluted), get some massages and play golf if that's your thing. My complaint with Japan is they have like no seasoning and dishes are simple. You get grilled meat. You get plain fish. It’s very fresh ingredients and quality food but plain. Thailand they kick you in the balls with tons of different flavors for each dish.

Thais in general keep to themselves. Most in their day to day life have no interest in a farang, especially a tourist one. Someone being friendly out of the blue likely wants something from you, sees you as a mark. I'm not saying you have to be anti social or just assume every Thai that speaks to you is going to rip you off. Just be mindful of behavior patterns and look for something out of place. Always get into the habit of making sure prices for services are fully agreed on. Don't just assume because someone does something it will be for free. Taxi drivers are bad about that if you don't make them use the meter or agree on a price before hand.

If/when you participate in something not wholly legal like prostitution or using certain drugs, just understand protection under the law is forfeited. You are a lot more likely to run into more opportunistic types in that world.
