You can have good internet outside of BGC. I'd recommend you scout out locations you can keep returning to. Acquire a 5G router with the ability to use external antennas. Make sure it's "openline" which is Filipino slang for unlocked, meaning you can use any sim card. Ideal locations would be resorts etc where you can get good coverage from Smart and Globe in addition to whatever their in house wifi is. You always want to have a backup. Can't get caught with your pants down like I did after the last typhoon. If your router is openline then it will probably let you change the frequency bands too. This means you can experiment and do speed tests on each one. A normal off the shelf router you buy will just lock on the strongest signal even if it's not the fastest/most stable one.

tl;dr scout out resorts etc where you will want to spend some time when you are free to visit, figure out backup plans for internet if you will stay longer

I should also say ignore the parts about the resorts and heed my advice even if you live in a nice condo in the city or whatever. Cities or provinces Filipino ISPs are the same. Everything could go to complete shit at a moment's notice. They have had nationwide outages and not even announced the reason why or publicly acknowledged that anything happened in the past. Make sure you have a backup plan.

If you buy one of those openline routers I was talking about Huawei is the best. The modified firmware that the locals flash them with have all the most advanced features. IMEI changing, band locking, VPN connectivity and if you want to get more advanced you can learn how to do cell locking. Learning how to actually do some of that stuff might require watching some YouTube videos that are not in English but if you're a visual learner you'll be alright.

When I read back through old threads I saw a lot of posts about Mang Inasal. It's an iconic Filipino institution that everyone knows and loves. If you're into it I recommend you track down "Bacolod Chicken Inasal" and check that out instead. It's arguably better.

If you go to one you will see there are less people inside. There might not even be any customers at all. You may ask yourself "but on those old shows I watched on the Travel Channel they told me the best heckin food comes from the places with the longest lines!" That logic does not apply here.

Mang Inasal was taken over by Jollibee. The owners of Jollibee are brilliant capitalists who understand the fast food market in this country better than anybody else. They know that the price of the food is more important than the quality. They can't serve street food vendor quality slop or else their reputation will take a total nosedive. But they also need to meet the expectations of the poors.

So think about it. If you're not a broke ass try going to that other place. A lot of locals aren't really that aware of it even. It's kinda on the fringes as far as chains go. If you take a girl who is used to eating Mang Inasal there she might be impressed. If you eat alone you will get a better meal in a cleaner environment while not being surrounded by total chaos.

It's all about perspective. I was comparing it to Mang Inasal not the real deal. A lot of food experiences in the Philippines involve being at a mall or something like that. The point of the post is that you don't need to choose the most obvious thing in that setting. Going places and experiencing the foods that specific regions are known for is very different. A lot of people who post in this thread are afraid to do that so getting way too much into it is almost a waste of my time.

I know sometimes, I talk shit about America and white people, but make no mistake about it, their is a reason people want to come here.

I've returned back to Florida, and while I do miss my children, I absolutely do not miss the Philippines anymore. The first times I went, I felt sad at the airport, knowing I was leaving the land of easy slum pussy, but know I feel much differently

I arrived back to Miami, and was immediately greeted by my neighbors in the neighborhood that I grew up in. They weren't greeting me because they wanted a loan, or thought they could get something from me, they just wanted to say Hi and ask about my trips.

I went to church up the street from my house with my mom, and they had a big dinner spread out on the table, absolutely free of charge. A quick 30 minute service after....with the topic being "loneliness". Yes, I can relate, as I've felt great loneliness in the Philippines being isolated from my true culture, but it is the bed I made, I so I have to lie in it know. It was nice to be around other Cuban people.

After the service, they had boxes upon boxes of free produce from the fields around my house. Oranges, peppers, tomatoes, watermelons.....all completely free to take as much as you want.

The next day, my mother suggested I go and help them down at the church where they have a free bread giveaway. I kinda wanted to cry, as I've never actually been in an American food bank and I've gotten so used to seeing crushing poverty in the Philippines. There was pallets upon pallets upon pallets of bread, pastries, produce, meat, canned good.....all free to take! Nobody was taking pictures, there was no politicians involved, nobody there was getting paid.....it was all just because they genuinely enjoy to help other people. I forgot how that felt living in the Philippines.....it has made me jaded, but I do feel some sense of relief being home

I have picked up a lot of Tagalog which helps but being able to just speak to people in English made it so I was getting somewhere even before then. Really I came here because people are Christians and they speak English. There's some cultural familiarity. What you don't know about people here you can learn just by talking to them.

As an aside I traveled back to the US after living in the Philippines for so long and spent a couple years there again. When I would encounter Filipinos IRL I could understand what they are talking about. I didn't tell them that because that's such a corny thing to do. I lived in the Philippines for 12 years and I have never been the victim of a crime.
