I'm staying in Iceland with friends for a week. We're going to be a group of 8-10 guys.
Exact date is TBD but likely going to be late next year, October November or something like that.
What are some tips for cool and not immediately obvious things to do and what's a nice place to stay that isn't Reykjavik?
We've done this a couple times and just rent a house together, no hotels.

october / november is probably going to be fairly bleak weather wise. persistent cold, lots of rain or maybe snow, wind, that kind of thing
days will be getting short as well
so driving around could be a real bitch and the interior / highland areas will be closed to you
don't get bus tours everywhere, hire a car and go where thou wilt

however you have correctly figured out that staying anywhere that isn't reykjavik is the thing to do. while people do drive round the entire island in a week or less this is a bit of a waste of a trip as you spend all the time in the car. so pick an area that looks good and explore it. south coast from selfoss through to hofn has lots of nice stuff to look at and you'll be able to get accom around Vik. Myvatn area also has a lot to see.
if you have any geology enthusiasts in your group then all the volcano stuff in reykjanes will be very exciting for them

Me and fiancee just got back from a 7 day trip. We rented a Camper van and went around the ring road. Had a few long driving days, but we crammed in a lot and saw almost everything. Very comfy, would recommend.

For 8-10 guys, doing the entire ring road would be challenging. Depends on coordination and if people want a relaxing or more adventurous trip. Definitely don't just stick around Reykjavik for a week. Drive the Golden Circle, Southern Coast, and Snaefellsnes Peninsula at least. Myvatn if you have the time. East side is optional if you're not up for the full ring road. It's a very pretty drive, especially if you go out to Seyðisfjörður, but there's not a lot between Hofn and Myvatn.

Immediately obvious stuff:
>Golden Circle: Must do. See Thingvellir, Geysir, Gullfoss, Kerid Crater. Enjoy the scenic drive.
>National Museum: Goes through the entire history of Iceland chronologically. Must do.
>Blue Lagoon: Cool but very touristy and expensive. Glad we went, was nice to have everything catered, but we would probably just go to a smaller hot springs next time.
>Snaefellsnes Drive: Another scenic drive with cool stops.
>Southern Coast: Sejalandfoss and Skogafoss are must sees.

Less obvious:
>Silfra Fissure: Very cool snorkeling tours of the Silfra Fissure, can do alongside a golden circle drive. They put you in a wet suit and you can see the underwater fissure of two tectonic plates. Big highlight
>Skogar Museum: Right next to Skogafoss, smaller museum that's fantastic. Crammed full of stuff with outdoor turf house exhibits. Barely anyone was here when we went
>Vatnajökull Glacier Hike: Did a glacier hike with a tour from Vatnajökull National Park. Major highlight, get to walk on top of a glacier and go into ice cracks and caves.
>Eiriksstaðir: Ruins and recreated house of Lief Eriksson. Very pretty area, a bit northeast of Snaefellsnes. Interior is closed in November but can still see the outside, was worth it as a history buff

This was our itinerary document we made for the trip. Formatting is rough and we didn't stick to everything exactly (like Day 1 we did the Silfra snorkeling tour instead of Reykjavik sight seeing). But should give you some ideas.

You should eat whale and puffin while in Iceland

This is really nice, thank you.
Driving the ring isn't something we're gonna be able to do with a group that big, but it's gonna give me an idea about what to pitch to the others and where to look for housing. The fissure and the glacier hike particularly sound really really nice.
