I just got back from Japan, spent 3 weeks there. Was in Tokyo; Shinjuku, Shibuya, Roppongi for days, and Osakas Dotonbori, and never had a single negative interaction. Never saw any violence either. Yes there were touts in Kabukicho who approach you occasionally but you can just wave them off. Also lots of chinese tourists went home or cancelled their trips due to Japan China geopolitics, so places will be less busy
I was in shinjuku one month ago and it's literally overrun with black people, I easily saw 100 just walking around in a 15 minute period. They all walk up to you and try to talk to you so that they can scam you. It made me think that Tokyo is a shithole but maybe it's just shinjuku and rapongi. When I was walking through Kabukicho, some big black dude was trying to rope me into a scam. I just told him I'm cool and he let me go. Obviously I wish it didn't happen, but that's the only time it did, and he wasn't forceful. It's not really a big deal.
