Anyone else just like experience of being at the airport? Even without traveling.
>>
>>2846039
No
>>
>>2846039
I did when you could wait at the gate as a non-flyer; once they took it away I just pick-up or drop off at the curb and don't bother going in
>>
>>2846039
Not really. Food isn't healthy and refreshing. I'm sticky and clammy in need of a shower.

>without travelling
it feels like in breathing dentist office air.

Something feels off.
>>
>>2846039
I do. Its because its always associated with me going on a super cool trip somewhere. So everytime im at an airport something really amazing is about to happen or has just happened.
I feel the same way about gas stations outside of towns kinda. I associate them with road trips so it feels nice being at a new one far from a town.
>>
>>2846096
I get it.
>>
I always check out the lounges.
>>
>>2846039
No, the endless waiting, overpriced foods and often rude staff spoil it for me. I think i paid around 20 bucks for a single beer once in the Newark airport its bizarre
>>
Only if I am going to be in a lounge, if not I will be depressed and hate every minute of it
>>
I like public spaces, a big airport is like a city but everyone is goal-oriented, trying to get where they’re going.
I book hostels last minute, and in Oslo the cheapest was $100, but no problem, I took the train to the airport and slept on the floor, no one bothered me. I didnt have a flight booked but while I was there all night I got a cheap one to Portugal.
>>
>>2846039
I like places like airports, sea ports, gas stations (especially the really huge ones), that sort of thing, because they are transitional places that people go to to go somewhere else.
>>
If airports stopped being retarded and had capsule hotels in them then the experience would be much better
>>
>>2846325
Wuhan was based for this
>6 hour wait between flights
>unlimited lounge access
>land
>leave airside
>lounge access grants me 2 hours capsule sleep
>cross back airside
>chill in lounge
Shame that China seems to nerfed alcohol in all airports now. Wuhan, Chongqing, Chengdu, Sanya.... All seem boozeless.
>>
>>2846039
Yeah I get it OP. Airports have a buzz about them, there's so many moving parts that come together so that people can get on a plane and go on vacations. It's not something you do every day.

But if youre coming back from vacation, then you have to have a nice airport. SIN and ICN are great to get airside early and explore. However airports like LHR and CDG are so grim it makes you want to find another destination. Even HND is fkn shit.

How is Haneda and Incheon?
>>
>>2846460
from a personal side i love haneda. more than narita. easy to navigate and good shops. JAL and ANA lounges are nice too
>>
>>2846417
>Paris CDG in the top 10
What? Fucking how?
>>
>>2846039
Yeah, I don't like flying but airports are pretty cool places. Partially because of the excitement of going somewhere itself but also because it is fascinating to see how the infrastructure in these gigantic places work. With the bigger ones it's almost like a city of its own with emergency services, maintenance, etc. And also that it is a little (touristic) window into the country you're in, even if you're just transferring between flights.

>>2846198
>a big airport is like a city but everyone is goal-oriented, trying to get where they’re going.
True and they can be stressful places, but once you have to wait because of a long layover or delay my experience is that fellow travelers at airports can be quite open and easily approachable. You're in it together and there's nothing better to do so might as well talk :)
>>
>>2846039
I used to when I was a kid, then I experienced the hassle, long lines and security violating my privacy as an adult and grew to detest them
>>
>>2846548
you don't like the refugee camp they set up airside, where '''''volunteers'''' hand out free gibs?

I don't know why, but airports give me this weird sense of tranquility, even though it really shouldn't. Yes, there are crying babies, pajeets yapping loudly on the phone, old people who still don't know about the 100ml liquid limits, and a mixed array of thirdies who don't know how to use a moving walkway, but even with these issues, I feel a weird sense of comfort.

If there is a destination that just feels like one giant airport, I'd like to check it out for a few days.
>>
>>2846567
An airport would make for a good theme park.
>take off coaster
>drop ride for control tower
>crazy taxi coaster outside arrivals
>security is one big spookdooky dark ride inside an x-ray machine
>a literal baggage carousel
>>
>>2846417
>Hong Kong
You're fucking joking right
>>
>>2846039
>26 hour layover in Singapore Changi Airport at the end of covid, not allowed through customs
Absolute heaven, paid for lounge access and a shower half way, went watched a movie, if i had swimmers could have gone to the pool, so much shit to do and then just buy some tallboys from 7/11 and go drink in the tropical gardens when you want to relax
Also proper sleep lounges that you have the mercilessly hawk over for one to get vacant. Otherwise right up the end of some terminals you can usually find some quiet spaces to sleep.
>>
>>2846671
yeah mate, nothing beats SIN airport. I heard now they have some butterfly rainforest and big waterfalls.
>>
>>2846039
Yeah I like it. Everyone coming and going, everyone has a purpose. Nobody loitering aimlessly.

The airport has to be nice and airy though. Claustrophobic hellscapes that look like nuclear bunkers like IAD are actual torture.

>t. Worked at airports for 10 years
>>
>>2846565
I just don't like the airport.
It feels like someone build 5 shitty US flyover regional airports and a temporary shelter you could use as a terminal in a cluster and declared it a international airport.
>>
>>2846041
FPBP
Airports are so fucking homogenous. Same old bullshit routine every time. Only difference is how many times you get raped by security in the process, or how far you have to walk to find a drinking water dispenser after the raping is complete.
>>2846093
How are you sticky and clammy after flying? The freakin humidity on planes is like 16%. My eyes get so bloodshot from the dry air after a long flight, it looks like I took a shot of THC moonshine.
>>
>>2846753
at this point i always bring eyedrops. the biggest game changer was bringing 1l of water on. and even that didnt feel like enough. the first time i flew JAL i thought i was going to die of dehydration from thr tiny water bottles they give you like twice per flight. and thats on premium econ
>>
>>2846753
I would describe it as humid and stale air. Similar to a concert venue
>>
>>2846567
I get the same feeling. You're removed from normal time and space with no responsibilities except making your flight and you can just relax and be at peace.

>go to european airport
>no fucking electric plugs anywhere
>the few places that do have them are all busted
>find some random place for a wall outlet
>try to use it
>some rajeet ahmed abuladurka SIRS NO USE WALL SIRS
What the fuck is wrong with you europe? I won't praise US airports much but at least finding a place to charge my devices or normal wall outlet isn't a chore.

>>
>>2846039
Before 9/11 my nearest airport used to have a foodcourt landside and the rear wall was solid windows looking over a load of gates and the runway so you could watch planes taxi-ing and taking off. My dad used to take me and my grandad down there to get lunch and plane watch. 9/11 happened and they closed it and banned non-travellers from using the airport.

Up until he died my dad still loved watching youtube streamers covering LAX (he discovered streamers during a particularly bad storm here where a streamer became famous overnight capturing insane sideways landings and rollercoaster go-arounds).

It's only certain terminal transfers that are awful, mainly when to transfer to/from USA so the english online opinions you see are rather biased
Otherwise it's nowhere near as bad and has also improved recently.
Way better than FRA or LHR imo
>>
>>2846039
Depends on the airport and how long I'm there for. I like wandering around some larger ones, but it gets boring after a while.
>>
>>2846039
>>>/n/
Airside is comfier
Expensive AF.
It's better as a traveler. Being around them looking planes may be cool depending on the airport. But they're not really the best place to being around for too long.
>>
>>2846417
Charles De Gaulle? You've got to be kidding me.
The top two make this look legit but CDG is one of the worst airports I've ever been to worldwide, has something changed in the last ten years?
Changi is easily the best, surprised no one has done better or just straight up copied it.
>>
>>2848812
What's bad about it? I didn't expect to have to go through security for my connecting flight, but other than having to dump my water bottles out and put all the LAGs back in the baggie, it was a reasonably generic and pleasant airport experience under the gray December skies of northern France. Some people were panicking because the line was long and their connecting flight was leaving in 45 minutes, but security was just like "it's okay, you're cool"

Next to my gate was a flight going to Yaounde, Cameroon. Interesting to see all the Cameroonians (and a few tourists as well).
>>
>>2848862
It's not one particular thing I just didn't like it.
When you're a naive idiot arriving in Europe for the first time sorta expected better, place was a mess and chaotic, a lot of people sleeping everywhere in the middle of the day
>>
>>2846039
Generally yes, but if it's a shity low cost shed airport, it makes me rage.
>>
>>2846039
>Anyone else just like experience of being at the airport?
Yes
>Even without traveling.
Not really. Architecturally, some are really pretty and sleek, but TSA and tons of people ruin most of it.

I used to like dining across from Miami airport, MIA, at 94th Aero Squadron restaurant. It has a lovely view of the entire expanse of the runways, delicious food, and headphones at the tables if you want to hear the control tower conversations. You can also listen in at Dulles conversations in the Smithsonian Udvar Havy aviation museum in their tower too.
>>
>>2846198

I had a 15 your layover in Oslo airport and it was better than i could ever have imagined. Felt asleep on a free deck chair and slept for 9 hours
>>
>>2852936
Fuck Oslo Torp. Some faggot stole my vodka, which was a gift from some clungey Lithuanian.
>>
>>2853153
It was gardermoen, stealing vodka is strictly prohibited there
>>
>>2846039
No, airports that are a good hanging spots before and after you pass through the check in are very rare, and always expensive
>>
>>2853173
China has some decent ones
>>
>>2846039
Yeah, I kinda get it. Although if I'm at an airport, I'm traveling so it's hard to separate the two. It's always interesting to people watch and see what stores there are, what they have for sale, and the food on offer. Mostly true for foreign airports. What I really enjoy about airports, however, is knowing how miserable everyone is. That sparks joy in me.
>>
>>2846039
sometimes yes i do. leaving work the airport is good.
most uk airports arent relaxing.
surprisingly big usa airports had nice times in.
much of europe their airports in theory are ok but im usually going backto work so no.

billybishop in toronto was nice experience (atleast just the commute)
>>
>>2846039
What kind of airport?
>>
>>2846961
nigger what if you're at a layover?
>>
>>2846039
I hate airports. The crowds, the people standing in your way, somehow literally no seats anywhere near my gate, the security theater humiliation ritual, walking forever, it sucks. It's only the 2nd worst part about flying, beaten only by being stuck in a crowded airplane, squished in with cramping legs and loud engine humming for the 3+ hours you're stuck inside, not to mention constant delays.

At the same time, settling into a less crowded nook in an airport is extremely comfy.
A nice restaurant where you get some beer, a nice meal, and watch the chaos unfold just outside.
A nice lounge that's nearly empty with snacks, drinks, showers, and comfy chairs overlooking the runway so you can watch the planes taking off.
These are the only points of joy I have found while in an airport and I hate how it's impossible to have a consistently good experience. Lounges are a good idea but everyone and their mom has access, so they're either packed with crowds or trashy or have little food. I don't know why we can't just have private lounges where you just pay $100 at the door and it's consistently good and not crowded, away from the riff-raff.
>>
>>2853835
There are elite lounges at larger airports for people with high enough status.
>>
>>2853843
The problem with "high status" is it's always just for people that constantly travel, people that are always booking with the same hotel or airline. I don't travel often, so that's locked out from me.
I guess that works to keep crowds out at least.
I was thinking just charging $100 at the door instead of giving everyone free access like most lounges would accomplish the same thing, but thinking more about it you'd still get some assholes pillaging everything to get their money's worth.
idk what I can do, just sucks there's no way to opt out of being grouped with the lowest common denominator other than being super rich or traveling constantly.
>>
>>2853835
sounds like you have been to some shitty airports. Believe or not there are ones out there in the world that have interesting exhibits, plenty of seating, food options, and loads of crap to laugh at and or browse through in the shops. Even some half decent deals on gizmos and doodads. That and there is nothing like pulling up to the airport bar and shooting the shit over a cold one with some random who has either just come into town or is off somewhere.
>>
>>2853923
My main gripe is really just the crowds, which I guess varies based on time of day and airport.
I loved the KLM Crown Lounge at Toronto, I got there right when they opened and there was only 5 or 6 other people in the whole place, it was quiet, there was plenty of fresh food and snacks and beer and I got a comfy spot by the window overlooking the planes taking off. It was my first time being in a lounge and in hindsight it's a mid lounge but not having a crowd made it so comfy.
Right after that, I had a couple hour layover in Incheon Airport in Seoul, the ticket gave me access to a lounge so I decided to check it out.
The korean worker at the desk was like
>are you sure you want to use the lounge pass here?
and I said yes, not knowing what the lounge was like, since there's a wall preventing you from seeing inside.
I had thought that maybe all lounges would be as nice as my time at the KLM Lounge, so imagine my surprise when I walked in to discover it was packed with people, all chairs/tables taken, hundreds of people all standing around chatting and lined up for food. Unbelievably loud.
I almost turned on the spot and walked away but decided to try to get some food. Waited in line for 10 minutes, filled a plate with a couple different dishes, ate it standing up, and it was okay, not great.
The lounge looked really nice and probably would have been a good time if not for the hundreds of other people also in the lounge.
Ended up getting too annoyed by the noise and just went to my gate where it was still crowded but it was quieter and at least I could find a chair to sit on.

They had a bunch of shops and restaurants which I'm sure I could have found some refuge in but idk, I didn't see anything that wasn't already crowded and I didn't want to wander around.
