Been all over the world and still somehow never done SEA.

My plan is to start in Thailand and work my way through Laos and Cambodia and then do Vietnam north to south. Then if I have time/money left maybe fly to either Philippines, Taiwan, or Malaysia etc.

But what do you experts recommend? Is laos worth it? How much time in each country? Which cities/towns/regions are must gos? I'm going to stay in hostels and mostly play things by ear. I think I'd have probably 5-6 months max since I got some shit I gotta do when I'm done.

I'd probably leave in Feb

Show us your draft plan and lets take it from there.
Also, what are you looking to get from the trip? Any hobbies? Interests?

Honestly All I have planned is I'd fly into Bankok and I want to spend some time in the Northern forests around Chiang Mai and see Pattaya just because it's so infamous. I'm not a huge party/cub guy but I'm not opposed to it if it's a social thing to do with people I meet at hostels.

Then I want to maybe cut through Cambodia into Vietnam, work my way up then cut through Laos and then decide what to do from there if I fly to another country.

I love history even if it's boring/mundane stuff I love learning shit i'd never know unless I travelled there. I want to spend some time in monasteries even if it's for western people like me I just think it'll be a nice change of pace for a few weeks. Any outdoor stuff is a huge plus but I'm mostly looking for that big bustling vibrant city feel and getting lost walking around with nothing to do.

I'd also like to volunteer if there are any places you know that accept foreigners on short term basis. I don't even care what it is I just found that volunteering at places is a good way to learn about the country and meet people.

I'm also interested in maybe doing some stuff in South China. But I know that'll be a VIsa hassle and I'd have to try and get my visa in one of the embassies in SEA.

Hainan is visa free, and you can game the 10 day Chinese 'transit visa'. Mention in another thread I did:
>Chengdu (entered China)
>Xian
>Chonqing
>Flight to HK (to satisfy exit of transit visa)
>Flight to Hainan (30 days visa free)

Singapore - Hainan was cheap when I last looked, which means you could hook up to Indonesia and Malaysia easily.

Can always try these:

Never tried it myself, and it costs like €40 to join. Some other anons have said it's legit.

Oh nice this is good to know. I'd love to do Hainan. I'll think about flying further afield in China for the transit visa if I have the funds.

With 5-6 months Thailand, Laos, Cambodia, and Vietnam is easily achievable.

For me, I'd suggest Bangkok as an initial base and check out the south depending on the weather at the time of year - gulf side and indian ocean side tend to be inverted - then head north to Chiang Mai / Pai / Chiang Rai. If you want, you can get the slow boat down the Mekong from Houyxay to Luang Prabang. Laos now has a fast train courtesy of China, you can use that to go south to Vang Vieng and Vientiane. From this point you could re-enter Thailand and explore Issan or continue through Laos down to Pakse. Cambodia is worth it for Angkor Wat and Phnom Penh, and Sihanoukville if you're missing the beach. Although, Phu Quoc in Vietnam is not far either. Vietnam south to north is well established - Mekong Delta, Saigon, Dalat, Nha Trang, Hoi An/Denang/Hue, Hanoi, Ninh Binh, Ha Long Bay, Sapa, Ha Giang Loop. Vietnam has a lot going on.

How are you getting from Chiang Mai to Laos?
I've come close to doing the speedboat thing but it's a risky journey
Otherwise you're wasting days traveling back to Bangers and then Vientiane which isn't really the main place people go for Laos

Just go to Bali and Thailand and then once you’ve been to Thailand too many times (as far as customs is concerned) then go to Vietnam.

there are direct flights you know. also speedboats haven't been a thing for a while. you mean slowboats? doesn't seem too dangerous

Where should I go in Laos? Is it safe pretty much everywhere besides the Chinese border as long as I follow Curfew?
