Do people live on boats? I'm getting a bit bored of live and want to mix things up. I've always liked the idea of 'working remotely' from a boat, and just sailing around Europe from port to port.

Is this feasible? How much of a world of pain would I be getting myself into? I'd be looking to sell my house, buy a country shack to store shit and retreat to, and just be a man about the world.

To buy and build out a boat, you need money. Lots of money. /trv/ is full of self-proclaimed crypto gorillionaires, but strangely, none of them can afford a plane ticket overseas, much less a houseboat capable of blue-water navigation.

Best option would be to find an online community who is specifically looking to live this lifestyle. Make connections and take a voyage with somebody to learn the ropes and see if the boat life is for you. I'm a diehard landlubber, so it's not something I've even considered.

Don't do it anon: my buddy tried this in Florida/Carribean and financially it set him back years. Difficult and expensive to perform the constant maintainance required while living on board. When he threw in the towel, it took forever to sell and then only at a steep loss. You'd be better off living near the sea and renting/chartering a boat as desired.

Boats are a pain in the ass to maintain and always syphoning large amounts of money. The bigger the worse and European ports will drain your wallet more than any hotel.
You can do what you want, but considering you'd need to sell off your stuff you're not in a position to do it properly like the decamillionairs cruising around the med.
It doesn't sound like you have a whole lot experience with boats, neither the fuck you money to just throw cash at whatever problems comes to you.
So to me it sounds retarded honestly to make a move like this in your position, if you're serious first rent a boat for a few days or join a boat trip and talk to boat owners to see what it's like, cause i guarantee you they all have painful and expensive stories.

The saying goes the two best days of your life are when you buy the boat and sell the boat.

It was feasible back in the 60s when your pay scale could afford you a boat and all the trouble that goes with them. Nowadays, unless you are a millionaire, forget about it. Even a family friend of ours who was a millionaire had a boat and said it was a giant PITA.

It’s amazing but you have to go into it with the knowledge and (most importantly) willingness to make taking care of it your full time job. And even then it’ll still be expensive.

But its amazing if you do it right.

Watch in too deep, guy who repairs boats and lives on them. It's a fuckload of work and if you don't diy then you'll pay for someone else to do all the work you see
