Alaska, any good? I have a high likelihood of being stationed in Anchorage.
>>2848430What's the point of asking if you won't have much of a choice?
>>2848439Maybe I should have asked what there is to do...
>>2848430As far as daily life goes Anchorage is kind of a shithole. Great city to go and get shit faced all night especially in the summer but it's chock full of tweakers and general human garbage from the lower 48 who move there to "get away." If you want to go /out/ on your leave it's awesome because you have easy access to all of Alaska. I grew up in Fairbanks but spent most of my early adulthood in Anchorage and live on the kenai peninsula now, I would never go back.
Unless you like the outdoors, you're gonna be very disappointed. It's like a D tier city with a lot of drug use. Everything is deceivingly far away and the lack of sunlight will fuck with you. Cost of living is also insane but that doesn't really apply to you being on base.
>>2848430people in alaska have weird nativist locals only hills have eyes kinda vibes
>>2848430Depends what's your COLA and then I can answer the rest
>>2848430it's an expensive frozen shithole full of drunks and tweakers. Also the male to female ratio is like 3:1have fun
>>2848467He's moving to Anchorage not some military/mining outpost you clueless fucking retard. That said women in Alaska are generally pretty disgusting. I was lucky enough to get hitched to a hapa broad on the mainland before I moved back.
>>2848485There are less tweakers and drunks on military bases than Anchorage or any other city in the state really. you've clearly never been to Alaska, fuck off idiot.
>>2848488I lived in Alaska for 27 of my 34 years on earth. Nowhere has a "3:1 male to female ratio" unless it's extremely remote and dedicated exclusively to the military and mining industries but feel free to keep being a fucking retard m8, i'm not stopping you.
>>2848430The whole "tweakers" thing has a valid explanation. If you are a screw up drinker or druggie and a Native, they eventually kick you off the "indian" reservation, and you kind of end up being trouble to the city folks thereafter. There are several tribes officially. The other issue with Alaska is there is indeed a special kind of person that wants to be left the hell alone, have their guns and avoid the government, and this attracts others like them, even some underground criminals. Just don't be a gushy nosy friendly type to just anyone. Alaska is pretty gorgeous, and most everyone is busybusybusy, doing fun outdoorsy things. It's a lot of work to fish, hunt, fill up your freezer, chop your wood, and so forth. I think it may be a bit expensive overall. The state gives you a dividend on the oil profits, I hear.
>>2848491>I lived in Alaska for 27 of my 34 years on earth. No you didn't shithead
>>2848502The natives really aren't that bad unless you live in the northern boroughs. It's all the fucking trash that comes here from the PNW and the like that "want a fresh start" that cause the most problems. Literally nowhere in Anchorage is really "safe." Like when I lived in Chicago I knew if I avoided the melanin enriched neighborhoods I was gonna be safe but no matter where you go in Anchorage there's always the possibility of wild shit popping off. I never carried a gun on the mainland but I don't leave home without one in AK, the only difference is whether I'm carrying it to protect from wild animals or wild humans.
>>2848511>Alaska has the highest male-to-female ratio in the U.S., with roughly 106 to 108 men for every 100 women, a pattern stronger in rural areas like the Aleutians but closer to even in cities like Anchorage, reflecting a persistent gender imbalance skewed towards males, though less extreme than historical levels. Note that it's 100:108 and not 100:324, but by all means continue being a clueless fucking retard.
>>2848515>AI quote top kek, you really are a tard. Women outlive men. When you have a ratio it's near 50:50 it's grim for men. When you have a ratio where men outnumber women, it's really grim for young single men.
>>2848515why are you quoting AI if you lived there for 27 years?
>>2848511A lot of seasonal work register their state of residence in Alaska to take advantage of the relaxed taxation there. Alaska is like in the top 3 of most favorable places to live in terms of taxes. This means people working the spring/summer/fall jobs that come up form WA/OR/MT or truckers who work the winters will get some shithole apartment for 3 months to file all the AK paperwork then fuck back off to whatever state they want not updating their residence. This gives it a huge skew in terms of Male:Female census data.OP: Alaska is only good if you make enough to make it good. Without an income stated Anchorage can be hell on earth or a fine living situation. Your food budget and budget for any extroverted hobbies is going to double if not triple in AK.
>>2848516>>2848558When you correct for removing the under 18, over 60 (and the native indigenous population because let's be real here) the male to female ratio among young adults is heavily skewed towards men.
I had an uncle that moved to Alaska for a few years. He romanticized it and it spit him out. Everything costs more, even common shit at Walmart. it's very isolating and near impossible to find a partner. Shocking amount of lesbians too, so I was told. For 4 years in the military? It's probably a fun experience. I couldn't see myself living there unless I was born into it. Seems like a hard life.Understand that Alaska has a population the size of some B tier cities, and it's even less once you account for reasons that others have said here. And it's fucking huge.
>>2848561The problem with Alaska is the same problem with North Dakota/Montana. Some amazingly good high paying seasonal work and good paying jobs supporting that work, but when winter comes and it's 4-5 months of being shut inside or reclusive; it rubs some people the wrong way. You're basically going to be playing video games with bullshit lag, albeit better these days, or drinking more because work is slow and no events going on to follow up with. Unless you have good self control and are self motivated winters can drive you up a wall in cabin fever/alcoholism. With things costing more you're more likely to drink at home than the bar further isolating you from others.
What are the best places to live in Alaska if Anchorage is so bad?>>2848561Why don't they just go on holiday to a nicer place during the dark part of the winter? Money shouldn't be a problem and if the work is seasonal then there is no need to ask for unpaid leave..
Understand that Alaska consistently has the highest suicide rate in the country. Isolation is not what you think it is. Get out with friends. Army or whatever branch at least has some social aspect to it.
>>2848674It's all relative. Anchorage is the best place to live because they actually have shit. It's probably gotten worse since the tariffs. Costco is probably the best thing to ever happen to Alaska. I don't think people can comprehend the size of Alaska. Juneau is a 20 hour drive from Anchorage. A "major" town could be 3 hours from Anchorage and all you see is picrel. This isn't some attempt to slam Alaska, it's just the reality of being isolated/fragmented by simple geography.
>>2848678>Understand that Alaska consistently has the highest suicide rate in the countryBecause the bodies preserve themselves in the cold unlike in the 48's so it's easy as piss to see a suicide vs. a murder or just left to missing person because of decay.
>>2848747Looks like Finland/Sweden but I get you, it's boring for me. I thought that there was a more variation but that's rather due to me living in Northern Norway. I'm still surprised that life seems so difficult there, Northern Norway is pretty nice and does not have these problems. The top parts such as Tromsø are on the same latitude as the northernmost parts of Alaska and do not have sun for two months. Life is pretty nice and supersafe here. What I saw of Alaska in a few videos on the Youtube channel of outdoor boys also seemed nice but I am aware of the social decay in the USA.Regarding the prices: hunting and fishing is almost free, building a greenhouse and growing your own stuff is cheap and easy too.
I would never settle down there but got to do a lot of cool things for work. If you do go I hope youre able to take advantage of it and see things that most people will never. Surf the bore tide, Ski/snowboard Alyeska, dipnet in the kenai river, also the cool towns on the peninsula, abandoned base on Adak, never been to the Alaska range personally but serious mountains. A person can really fuck some shit up. Build good relationships and be a good person. Someone told me there's a bar downtown I think it's F street station, it draws a lot of pilots, military and adventurous people that you would want to meet. GL anon
>>2848491Still reasonable to extrapolate that the number of single young men vastly exceeds the number of single young women in Alaska. This means the women don't have to put in any effort to impress men, because simply having a hole makes them special and worth chasing.>>2848502The work time expectations for jobs in Alaska are pretty insane. 100 hours a week is not unheard of. This has dissuaded me so far from seeking employment up there. Manual labor isn't backbreaking when it's limited to 40 hours a week, but you can very well ruin your back for life when you work such extreme overtime hours.>>2848566No work in winter is a dream come true, desu. Now you have 4-5 months to travel overseas.>>2848773The US is a country of immigrants, i.e. people who were rejected from or thrown out of their home countries. Thus, it's full of people with generational mental issues who lack any sense of belonging. >>2848678>get out with friendsFuck that. Getting shitfaced and hooking up with trashy women is a ruinous habit, far more ruinous than disciplined isolation. Focus on working, staying healthy, saving money, then get the fuck out and go somewhere else when you have free time.
>>2848430I had an AF buddy stationed there like back in the 90s, he implied that the population of Alaska were all sketchy criminals or the sketchy descendants of said criminals
Rural Alaska? Remember that episode of spongebob where the guy is sad and probably suicidal over how his pencil broke? Imagine driving 2 or 3 hours to get to the nearest town, buying what you need, only to have forgotten something after the fact. Maybe you bought wood but didn't buy nails. It's that kind of shit that either creates hardened people, people who leave for the lower 48, or worse, straight up kill themselves.
You'll like Alaska because it will make you appreciate literally everywhere else. Your standards will be lowered and almost anything will be better. >t. currently reside in Sitka
>be me>workplace wants to send somebody to Anchorage>worried that they'll send me because I'm single>coworker approaches me>she asks if we can pretend to be engaged so we both can avoid Anchorage>agree to her scheme>got so deep into it we got married for real
>>2849341lmao. hillarious.
>>2849341>>2849345Please tell me you spent your honeymoon in Alaska.
>>2848887>No work in winter is a dream come true, desu. Now you have 4-5 months to travel overseas.Yeah aside from no pay those months.
>>2848430Alaskan cities are pretty underwhelming overall, try to go innawoods as much as you can on your free days.
>>2849351I'm curious, is there any public transport out to decent trailheads? Or is it all carcarcar? How can you get absolutely wankered out on a hike if you have to drive back?
>>2849556No public transport whatsoever and in many cases ferries or air transport is needed if you live very remote.Telling you, it's hard as fuck up there.
>>2849341I loved that show
S-tier outdoorsEverything else is horribleMiserable climate 9 months out of the year, then worst mosquitos you'll ever see the other 3 months. Everyone is an alcoholic or on drugs. Dating is nonexistent and if you hook up with a local you'll somehow get dragged into bullshit drama with her junkie ex. The novelty of incredible fishing, snowmobiling, hiking, etc fades after a year. 1/10 do not recommend Alaska.
>>2849341I watched this anime, pretty meh
>>2848463I prefer Coke, but Pepsi is okay if that's all they have. PLEASE don't tell me they only have off-brands like Faygo or RC.
>>2848430quit the military dumb bootlicker, go wherever you want
What is the connection between cold climate and alcohol or drug abuse? Why it is so prevalent? Or is this just on frozen barren places like Russia and Alaska?
>>2848430no, highest rate of suicide in the millitary
>>2848747If we can't even properly colonize Alaska how are we going to deal with Greenland?
>>2852077Seasonal disorder from all the darkness, low vitamin D levels from no sunlight in the winter. Also self selects for that demographic because of the nature of the location. Alaska is often a final resort for scoundrels, vagrants, or the "just wanna be left alone" crowd. Frontier environments tend to attract people from both sides of the bell curve.
>>2852077For a couple months there’s 0-4 hours of sun depending how far north you are. It’s endless dark, cold, and gray. We’re animals. It affects us and messes with neurotransmitters leading to depression. Suicide will always be high in places like Alaska, Russia, Seattle, etc.
>>2852824What's the Alaskan sunshine holiday of choice to break up the winter blues? Surely there's that 'one resort' where all the Alaskans charge into on charter flights.
>>2852780Alcoholism is just absolutely bizarre. It doesn't even give a rush of ecstasy like drugs do, alright maybe a little on the start. But then everything from your stomach to your head starts to get fucked and you keep drinking anyway. You wake up and you don't even remember who you are. Truly, the addiction of choice to live on a frozen dark hellhole, or any other hellhole for that matter.
>>2853171/druk/ thread when?
>>2853174Oh, I wish. The sex scene with Maria Bonnevie... fuck.
