Great city to go and get shit faced all night especially in the summer but it's chock full of tweakers and general human garbage from the lower 48 who move there to "get away." If you want to go /out/ on your leave it's awesome because you have easy access to all of Alaska. I grew up in Fairbanks but spent most of my early adulthood in Anchorage and live on the kenai peninsula now, I would never go back.
Unless you like the outdoors, you're gonna be very disappointed. It's like a D tier city with a lot of drug use. Everything is deceivingly far away and the lack of sunlight will fuck with you. Cost of living is also insane but that doesn't really apply to you being on base.
