I am an American who will be visiting Germany, my ancestral homeland. How do I make the most of my time? I love history and museums, but I'd also like to meet some locals. Open to all suggestions.
>I'm going to something about the size of Texas how do I have fun?Great thread retard maybe post some details like length of stay, budget, time of year and actual cities visiting.
>>2850114Going in March, visiting Berlin, Dresden, Hamburg or Munich, want to also get out and see some of the castles and mountains. Ballin on a budget, private hostel rooms or budget hotels.
>>2850115for about 2.5 weeks
>>2850115My suggestions: Beer at the spree river in Berlin, currywurst, döner. Berlin has all the history and tons of museums.. just check what you are interested in. Munich is like a huge village, more laid back, good Bavarian food. Dresden has lots of beautiful architecture. For castles and mountains it may make sense to rent a car(?). That way you can also see more rural Germany, that is much different from cities. Also nice to stop by some smaller towns. Landsberg am Lech is very beautiful and doesn't have much tourism so you can see very authentic Germany. It's where an Austrian wrote is book in prison. Johnny Cash was also there for some years but who cares (I do). You can combine it with visiting Andechs where monks make great beer. Good pork too. Neuschwanstein is an hour from there. Partnachklamm is cool. I also enjoy the Königssee, but there is lots of tourism.
>>2850145I'm guessing the Germans are pretty good drivers? I though about roadtripping, I would have to get an international license.
>>2850115Fellow burger and Krautland traveler here. If you're going to see Neuschwanstein, definitely stop through the town of Fussen. Storybook village at the foothills of the alps, good restaurants. I had a magical time there, though the lodging options are slim. My favorite place in the whole country. Up near Hamburg the village of Hameln is similarly gorgeous. For me though, if I were going to do a generalized "Germany trip", I would focus around the mid/south west, you've got Heidelberg for small town/university charm with a castle overlook, Baden-Baden for baths, Europa Park, Freiburg (comfy mid-sized city with amenities, not overladen with filth), Baiersbronn if you're into haute cuisine (Michelin star capitol of Germany), the Blautopf, there's a lot of good stuff down that way. Lot of caves too but they're only open in summer.
>>2850147They are, it's very safe. Roads are in very good condition too, mostly. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x-G28iyPtz0
