Going to Shanghai in a couple of weeks for four days then over to Tokyo. Is it actually a fun city? What to see and do? Where to stay?
>>
Shanghai is a fun city by itself. Lujiazui is the place with the skyline and across the way is the Waitan or Bund where you can view it. I'm a few years out now, but the Museum of Science and Technology subway station has a great fake market area and the museum itself is cool. Also highly recommend Power Station art museum (if it's still open) and the Museum of Urban Development. The Art Museum building at Mercedes Benz Arena was pretty cool but not really my favorite art museum I've been to.

Ive been hearing that China is open about their lack of freedoms. I find it amazing they have cities with people piled on top of each other like ants.

I don't know if that should stop people from visiting, though. I find China fascinating with how fast they've improved themselves.

They don't see it as a lack of freedom though. They do what they like and have fun. They're inherently more collectivist through their history, and take pride in their current progress.
Chinese people have way more freedom than before, and can do things their grandparents never dreamed possible.
They also see some areas of western 'freedom' as decadence, and don't want that path.
The government measures are the cost of entry for them at the moment. Whether that'll change, who knows?

The Chinese do have the ability to complain and make changes though. They protest and state unhappiness, and things often get actioned. It generally seems to jesterk at the moment for most. It'll be interesting what the next era brings - rise and fall, and all. I predict after Xi dies expansionism will begin as a way of keeping the train running.

We will probably be the one world government someday, China will probably win. I could see USA if they had Mark Carney from Canada approach be attractive tho.

USA may try to take over its entire continent, China will rule Africa, Oceania, and Europe will basically try to be independent and hold out as long as they can but be overwhelmed by Chinese commerce.

China's massively bottlenecked by language. They won't be able to hold anything outside of Asia for long. Their presence anywhere else will fade when the money dries up.

Funnily enough I was just in Shanghai a few weeks ago. It was my 3rd time but it was my first time exploring the city. I thoroughly enjoyed it.
Shanghai Tower was great. 2nd most tallest building in the world and it was a breeze to buy tickets on the spot than Burj Khalifa.
I had low expectations of Yuyuan Garden since it's a well known tourist trap, but it was actually the good kind of tourist trap. They transformed it into some cyberpunk meets history type of hotspot & there are plenty of shops around and no people bothering you. I'm big on tea scented products and saw 2 shops there that I liked.
Now take note that China is pretty much cashless now. I suggest using WeChat and linking your credit card there (or add balance on your account) because that will be your mode of payment everywhere. Google maps doesn't work so either use Apple maps or download Amap (Android users)

Currently staying with my wife’s family. They have a nice townhouse in the suburbs. I highly recommend Singapore, there things to do if your poor and rich. Food is amazing, and Singapore has honestly convinced me that diversity can work (if you actually enforce the law fairly, or just actually enforce the law).

I recommend going to
> fort Channing
>orchard road shopping district
>find some food stalls (hawkers) for cheap but great food
>little India (for the cleanest/best Indian food you’ll be able to get in the world
>sultans mosques
>gardens by the bay
>the nature preserve to see monkeys

I’m sure I’m forgetting more, but there a lot to see in Singapore. Have fun.

Take a day trip to Suzhou. Visit the Humble Administrator’s Garden and then take a walk down Pingjiang Road. In Shanghai, the Site of the first communist congress or whatever it’s called has a great museum and it’s free (of course). The French quarter has lots of nice restaurants and cafes to check out.

How accurate? My take on Shanghai as an outsider is that it's the richest city with the most Chinese girls who speak English and studied abroad, making it perfect to date some top tier girls as a decent/fit white guy
>>
>>2859632
if you were a decent/fit white guy you wouldn't need to date chinese girls. go get /fit/
>>
>>2860040
"Date" as in fuck after 1 simple date. You can put in high effort, multiple dates, lots of money to bang an average girl in the west after dealing with all the rejections along the way or an attractive girl once in awhile.

Top tier western girls are simply out of reach unless you're 9/10, whereas top tier asian girls are within easy reach. I'd take a top tier asian over an average white for fun, which is easy enough to do with western-born asians and I would expect easier in Asia
>>
>>2860046
Well off (living in the city and attractive) Chinese girls will happily report you for rape or tell one of the 9 guys they're stringing along that you attacked her if you try to one night stand them
>>
>>2860046
by top tier asians i assume you mean the 5/10 rainy sluts you find on tinder bumble?
lived in asia for years and can count the amount of times ive seen a foreigner with a hot asian girl on one hand

Its why they mostly focus on commerce, they know they gave no chance (and no interest in) building an amerimutt style troon culture and bank jewry "empire".

After Xis death, they will likely just ham up conflicts with the US,india etc. to prevent internal fighting by uniting everyone against an outside enemy. As far as expansionism goes, they mostly already tried and failed with most of their neighbours. Either by being thwarted outright, or by being unable to integrate conquests long term due to culturak differences.
The Chinese only attack if they are 100% certain of victory, and can also make their conquest a true part of China long term. This does not apply to any of their current neighbours.

Taiwan is a nothingburger, it will fall into their lap eventually as HK did, when Mutt influence fades away as their crook toothed cousins did.And they know that

i would say you should stay near the East Nanjing Road metro station area, around there and the Bund. you can find whatever price tier of accommodation you are in. it is the most convenient location if you are going to be going around all of shanghai. also it is easy to get back to the airport from there regardless of your flight time.
also get the Maglev from and to the airport, it is cool and a good novelty.

Made similar trips recently. Shanghai is a very nice city. Actually has more in the way of public restrooms and trashcans than Tokyo. If you're already traveling to Asia, I think it's worth taking a detour for the food alone. Not just for the local Shanghainese fare, but for authentic Chinese food from the entire country.

>What to see and do?
The other anon who mentioned Yuyuan Garden is right about it being a nice tourist trap. Qibao is similar, but feels much more authentic. Even more so with Suzhou, if you can make a day trip.

>Where to stay?
You can pick one of the usual international brands and play it safe. But I went with a local chain that was about a mile walk from a subway station. It was ludicrously cheap at about $20 a night. With most of the amenities you'd expect from a hotel that costs five times as much.

Whether the CCTV HQ is brutalist notwithstanding, that's not the architecture Shanghai is known for. Its most famous buildings are old-fashioned European-style buildings in the international zone and the most Y2K aesthetic skyscrapers in the world. Best place to witness this firsthand is to visit The Bund at night.
