Is Goa (in India) a shithole or a good beachside state?
>>
It would be decent if it wasn't full of indian scammers, it's too much even for indians to deal with so they go to thailand now if they can. There's a bunch of cool old Portuguese buildings and the rainforest seems pretty untouched compared to many places, but the water never looked close to that clear when I was there. It has a more standard crowded beach town feel than the general insanity of most of india, so it's one of the easier places to handle in the country other than the taxi mafia / bike rental scammers.

its far better than the rest of india but complete shit because its full of indians (goans are a small minority now and not at all alike indians)

Goa is one tiny piece of the Indian west coast, which has innumerable beach towns to visit and stay in (proximity to polluted river outlets notwithstanding). Its former popularity among foreigners seemed to derive from the availability of psychedelic drugs...but some say the "vibe" is over. Even hosteling in Goa has become too expensive for brokie beach bums from overseas, though Indian vacationers are arriving in record-high numbers. Last year 95% of the 10.7M Goa visitors were domestic holidayers with lots of money to burn on luxury accomodation. This is driving prices for everything up up up.

It's only rainforest during monsoon BTW. Now the trees are shedding their leaves in preparation for summer heat, and the waterfalls are all dry.
>general insanity
Hasn't been my experience at all. Indians are very sane and tolerant of others in traffic, but they do in fact do whatever they want. Anarchist/voluntaryist principles apply. The only no-nos are hitting somebody or completely obstructing the roadway (but even that is okay for a short time). If you stay in a place with less through traffic, there will be less impatient horn blaring. The west coast has few big cities south of Mumbai, so you can experience the easygoing village life.

More luxurious? Yes. Better than Maharashtra or Karnataka coast? No.

Goa isn't a part of India, it's a tourist beach.
If you want beach parties, bang lassies, whatever then fair enough. But usually it's full of isreali backpackers and jeet scammers.
