For a while now, I’ve wanted to visit Panama City, Panama. I would love to see the Panama Canal Museum, Panamá Viejo, and the Casco Viejo area; however, I’m hesitant because I’m worried about being a victim of crime. Central and South America can be pretty rough, to say the least, and while I understand Panama is one of the more developed countries in Central America, it can still feel relatively risky especially for tourists.

I’ve also really wanted to visit Russia, but for obvious reasons, I’m going to have to put that on the back burner for a while.

Panama? Lol. Been there. What a faggot.
Me:
>PNG for hiking trails and tribes
>DRC for long river trip and Virunga National Park
>Nigeria just to experience life. Will only go if I make a Nigerian friend and get an invite and shown around

I've been there. It's ok. The canal is cool but as a latin american capital it's mid. It looks pretty from far away but feels third world as fuck when you're on the streets there and it's noisy, polluted and hot as balls all the time.

Panama produces good rum and coffee and everything else is imported but cheaper than elsewhere in latin america owing to its convenient location and low taxes. There's a few mega malls and a couple markets where you can buy things made by indigenous people. Allegedly there's a military surplus open air market but I wandered around for an hour and couldn't find it.

Casco Viejo and Cerro Ancon are worth a visit, the former is like a seedier version of the French Quarter in NOLA.. the area has gentrified as of late but there's a lot of prostis in this city. It has a reputation for being a lot of sailors first lay in the tropics.

I'd say go but don't plan on a long visit. Panama is well connected to the rest of latam so it's a convenient place to stop on a trip to somewhere else.

This. I travelled all CA. Guatemala and Nicaragua were the highlights. Costa Rica was the biggest disappointment (like an eco theme park). And El Salvador had the most boring attractions.
Also, OP needs to bring tampons with him.

Panama is relatively safe if you stick to the tourist parts, Costa Rica is more exciting. Beware of >>2859510 Guatemala and Nicaragua are more dangerous.

Anon. Ffs. The big cities are dangerous in Guatemala. No travellers go there except staying in the heavily guarded bus station when transferring. Nicaragua is not dangerous. I'm trying to get this guy to be less of a weakling and your shushing him and rubbing his back.

There's police all over the gentrified part of Casco, just don't go too far west.

I just got back from a weekend in Panama City, one of the coolest places I've been. Visually, I've never seen any city like it. Miraflores was way better than expected. Uber for 10 minutes and you can hike in real canopy rainforest. This is probably the best time to visit casco viejo while it's like 30% boutique hotels and shopping, 30% slums, and 30% literal ruins.
Panama is more developed than others AND more dangerous. Those things aren't necessarily correlated, it's more about wealth disparity. That being said, as long as you don't try to walk between downtown and casco viejo, you'll be surrounded by a thousand other rich whites plus cops.

I've been to too many countries on the official "avoid all travel" list to take reputations seriously, also people who live locally tend to be ignorant cowards. The only place I've ever been robbed was in Belize, the "safest" country in CA (robbed by cops, ironically). All the horror stories I hear from friends are from shitholes like Madrid and Rome. I've been to dozens of 3rd world countries including africa and taken no precautions whatsoever.

If all of Mexico just became USA in 1850 people might really like it more than the USA, its such a shame.

I wholeheartedly feel sickened by the sudden lost of respect I feel for cowardly men. Our ancestors travelled to unmapped territories to face people explicitly at war with them, who would dismember and eat them on sight.
And we have trembling little faggots on this board who are terrified to go to a whole country with Airbnbs and cafe lattes because of some conflict where groups of people completely unconnected to them are in conflict.
Scared to go to Myanmar, are you Rohingya anon? Are you Kachin? Oh, you're American! Treated with privilege and respect anywhere you go on the country. Able to stay in the best neighborhoods, enjoy the warmest welcomes and people asking to take selfies with you. Shame on your bloodline coward. If only your ancestors knew how weak their line progeny would become.
