Just got back from an Asia trip. I've been avoiding going back to HK since COVID as I've heard it was dead and I couldn't bear to witness. Well, to get back to the US from Hanoi I thought why not hop over to HK for a few days. It's not worth it. The buzz and vibrancy in the streets is gone. People don't talk politics anymore. Most of the people who were resisting have already fled and those who remain get dragged out of their homes to the mainland. HK is filled with mandarin speaking mainlanders who bring with them their mandarin sensibilities, behavior, and general "vibe" for lack of a better word. The Cantonese charm is gone. Old mom and pop shops have been razed to make way for malls and show rooms the new mainlander elite shop at. Kowloon has 0 charm left.Hong Kong is just a boring mainland city now. I wish I never came here it's like watching a loved one on their death bed wishing it wasn't your last memory of them. Wishing your last memory was when they were healthy and happy. I regret it. I will never return. I can't bear to witness.
>>2862487Yeah, ok baizuo.Hong Kong today is cleaner and wealthier than it was in the past. There's nothing wrong with social peace and harmony. Not everyone wants the discord and polarization that define Western countries. You're just a clueless foreigner that romanticizes the filth, poverty and squalid living conditions most Hong Kongers lived in in the past.
>>2862493>Kowloon is just walled town Anyway, walled town was demolished under the British.
>>2862503Kowloon Walled City is representative of old Hong Kong which was filthy, poverty-stricken and crime-ridden.Sorry but Hong Kongers are better off now than they were in the past. You just don't like it because you're biased against China.
>>2862487What does this mean for my plans for a 'Films of Wong Kar-Wai' tour of HK?
>HK is dead>go there last year>have a blast>Old mom and pop shops have been razed to make way for malls and show rooms the new mainlander elite shop at.It's more like they all fucking died you retard. HK has been in exodus mode for decades. Covid didn't kill it, people just leaving did.
>>2862505The fact that you think Kowloon was just the walled city shows me you know nothing about HK. Kowloon 8 years ago had the best food and best shops still. Now it's all filled with mainlanders and their boring malls. You hardly hear any Cantonese.>>2862519> HK has been in exodus mode for decadesYes I know>Covid didn't kill it, people just leaving did.COVID was the end of the protest movements. Then the most recent mass exodus + 6 gorillion mandarin speaking mainlanders arriving.
Hong Kong can be worth it if you go into it thinking "Another mainland city" if you want the distinct identity it had yeah that's all gone. I don't think it's worth it at all it's just depressing desu
>>2862519The fact you pointed at covid tells me everything we need to know wumao. Go watch old movies from the 1970s bruce lee era
>t. seething angloidYou lost. If I were you I'd worry about her majesties crooktooth parliament jeeting whateve iis left of yout shit isles instead if the world finally breathing free of perfidious albion.
I had a decent time in Hong Kong. Got to stay with my wife’s aunt in her 3 bedroom apartment. The SEA muzzies sitting on the side walk are a little ridiculous, but the people are a lot better than mainland Chinese people.
>>2862662Whats to dislike about mainland people?I honestly think Filipinos and Indians are the worst there is, and everyone else behaves and is inoffensive.
>>2862493>>2862505Yes, because relative poverty means a superabundance of people willing to serve you for your money, or fleece you of it. Exciting and stimulating to be in such an environment. There's nothing at all fun about walking past endless glass-fronted corporate logo shops and being treated like a non-person by everyone thanks to the impersonal corporate nature of everything. No, we don't give a shit that you all have plenty of spending money from your corporate job which you spend at corporate stores. Your new culture is soulless materialistic hubris, and it's the reason you are going to die out in a generation.
>>2862657To think that the western world lost with what happened in HK is hilariousAll it proved is that people don't want to deal with communist bullshit and life is noticeably worse with it
>>2862904Typical gweilo: arrogant, ignorant and entitled.Hong Kong is not your personal amusement park. You don't even hide the fact that you expect the locals to behave like fawning slaves. Truth is you are not special.
>>2862904what a cynical fuck you are. How do you make the money to afford your travel? Do you work at a mom and pop store back home, or are you a corporate whore working a bullshit job where you talk corporate lingo all day long, zooming in and out of meetings?
>>2862487>More tourists in Japan>OMAGAAAAD!!! There's to many tourists in muh Japan!!! I's over!!! OWARI DA!!!>Less tourists in Hong KOng>OMAAAGAAD!!!! Hong Kong is DEAD!!! It's over!!! D-E-A-D! DEAD!
>>2862904>Your new culture is soulless materialistic hubris, and it's the reason you are going to die out in a generation.unlike the WestHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!
>>2862976not surprised you just take the easy way out. I'm not asian, not from Hong Kong, never even been there. I'm just calling out your bullshit demanding others live a lifestyle you don't want for yourself, you just want to CONSOOM it as a foreign spectator. Again, I'll give you another chance: what mom and pop store do you work at? What traditional, picturesque, technologically-backwards habits do you engage in back home?
The CCCP doesnt give a rats ass about the local elites privilieges. But it cares about people literally living in cages, or rather the potential for unrest that Comes from shitty living conditions.Anglo occupied HK sucked ass to live in for most of his inhabitants, and OP crying about Kowloon no longer being a shithole slum speaks volumes that he doesnt care and just wants his picturesque tourist shit. As always, op is a fag.
sort of weird nobody can explain exactly what hong kong had to offer pre-reunification that it doesn't now
>>2863002>pre-conquest*
>>2862487>Most of the people who were resistingresisting what?
>>2862986>never even been thereNo, you're not calling me out on anything, Mister NeverTraveled. Rejection of modern materialism and consumer privilege is more prevalent among Whites than any other race, even if we feel unable to reconnect with our own traditional way of life. You OTOH refuse to admit that advanced civilizational development has bred all sorts of social disorders in the human species that are not remedied by building new goddamn shopping malls with fine dining inside. >>2862909>no no no, you can't just have old flophouses with tiny rooms and stalls selling tasty cheap food all over the streets! that's heckin slavery! And that's why I'm in rural India instead of Hong Kong, because here the traditional ways of life are still very much alive. >>2862958 And no, I don't have to be a corporate paypig and compromise my anti-materialist principles to live a comfy, satisfying life here. >>2862982If you go to a world-class city and encounter no interesting characters on the street, be they foreigners or residents or some combination of the two, you're bound to feel deeply disappointed. Streets should be more than mere corridors for self-important people to hurry along from one door to another, but it's an unfortunate commonality among modern development that as the streets become perfected, they lose their character and become sterile, lifeless corridors. Even the planted trees look contrived and bullshit, never growing big enough to cast any meaningful shade (not that anyone even gives a shit about shade anymore when they are all going from one air-conditioned space to another). Half the time they die out after a year or two from sheer despondency, only to be replaced by another identical nursery tree.
fucking hell what's going on herea shitty op then apparently a load of little pinks have turned upwhat a shitty thread
>>2862487> Kowloon has 0 charm leftthis. just came back from HK a month ago and this is exactly what i thought. Kowloon side especially has lost that "grime" that made it an interesting place to walk around.Same thing even on the HK island side. > Wan Chai dead when i went on a Thursday night. All the seedy bars were either closed, or so dead that I didn't even notice it. That place was packing when i went to HK first back in 2008. > causeway baysouless. the only thing good about that place is that the streets and lanes are in all directions. if you try, you can get lost, which is a good thing.> LKFdidnt go there this time. just cbf
>>2863434oh noooo hong kong isn't your poverty tourism theme park any moreyeah fuck those soulless people for building a better quality of life instead of pandering to your desperate need to feel some kind of superiority that you can't get in your home country because you're a fucked up neurotic loser
>>2863441lol wtf...
>>2862487Agreed. It was my favorite city in the world. I went there right as the last big protests were happening and it was sad seeing it take its last breaths. It's been a steady downhill ride since then. The question is, what's the new HK? Surely you wouldn't say that Hanoi is anywhere near HK level, nor that it will get there anytime soon.
>>2863441Singaporean detected.
>>2863441Being absorbed into a soulless chink hive isn't a better quality of life. Your tfr is around .85 so we know chink hive buglife is total antithesis of human desires and health. You can claim to be advanced all you want, but the fact is your nation is catastrophically flawed and will collapse at this rate. You cannot stack people on top of each other and force both genders to work 12 hour days 6 days a week, and expect to thrive long term. You threw away your future for temporary gdp. You will find out.
>>2863448HK was unique in that it had that lingering aura of British influence and class. I don't think there is anywhere else in the world quite like it.I found parts of Taiwan to be similarly grungy in a charming way and gave me some of that "early 2000s Hong Kong vibes".
>>2863441It's you East Asian office drones who have a desperate need to feel some kind of superiority, because you don't have anything else in life besides your stupid salary and the consumerist flexes it affords you. In public you are a complete bugman...colorless, inexpressive, avoiding eye contact with everyone, oblivious to your surroundings. Only when you are out spending money do you put on a happy face for social media. Then the frown returns as soon as the camera goes away. Nothing truly satisfies you anymore. The idea of riding with your buddies to a noodle stall and whiling away the hours in light conversation next to the busy street is unthinkable, so you shit on it as poverty tier. It galls you to no end to realize that those poors living simple lives down in the tropical latitudes are happier and more fulfilled than you are. And their good spirits are the primary reason why we prefer to spend our time around them, and not around you.
>>2863466>drones who have a desperate need to feel some kind of superiority, because you don't have anything else in life besides your stupid salary and the consumerist flexes it affords youYou literally just described every American. Even the ones who actually have nothing.
>>2863448>>2863434is there any city that kinda compares to the vibe? Like maybe Bogota, or Tangier in Morocco? Istanbul maybe? What other city comes closest to it?
>>2862487>malls and show rooms the new mainlander elite shop at.yeah, the worst thing about this whole thing is that the mainlanders moving to HK are politburo transplants and rich kidsironically, the more "organic" mainland cities are actually much more fun. ever been to Shenzhen? it's just across the border from HK but actually has some of the old HK vibes to me. the people in the south of mainland China are friendlier than the northerners IMO, even though much of the population there is actually immigrants from the north.don't expect a copy of HK, that will never exist in our lifetimes. but there are fun new places in the world to explore
>>2863472You don't know anything about Americans. There are more ideological anti-materialists and other free thinking types per 100K population in America than any other country in the world. America was the origin country of hippies, the original NEETs. It's a whole lot more than Hollywood Vegas and Wall Street, though that's the side of America all Asian tourists want to see...
>>2863479Mumbai. It has the mix of glamor and poverty, the hectic pace of life, the innumerable dining options, the coastal mugginess, and the largest redlight district in Asia...but never once has a coomer anon dived in and lived to tell some tales.
>>2863542>Mumbai>red light districtno thanks, I think I'd rather keep my virginity
>>2862493>yeah that little dingy mom n pop cafe you've visited since childhood and that had the best fucking brownies in all of continental US?>it's a mcdonalds now>you should be happy, that old place was a total dump, now it's clean and follows all the standards>why do you not like it? we sell brownies and coffee too, and mom n pop happily retired to a clean and happy retirement home after running it for 50 years so you should be happy for them too, now we only staff it with young minimum wage workers
>>2862991>Anglo occupied HK sucked ass to live in for most of his inhabitants,so that's why literally millions of Hong Kongers fled the CCP after annexation in 1997? and many flee to this day, Canadian universities are full of them
>>2863059>encounter no interesting characters on the street, be they foreigners or residentsGo to the Jade market, you will meet characters.Go to the parks and talk to the old people staying there all day long.Go to the park on sundays (or maybe saturdays) and see all the east asian housemaids on their day off.Go to any mom and pop restaurant. The problem is not Hong Kong but you, you're full of shit.
>>2863603>east asian housemaidsJust say filipinas and Indonesians. They are not east asian either. And there is literally nothing interesting about them, everyone avoids them on Sundays. What are you going to do, start hanging out with them? Some weird freak harassing the maids on their day off in the park would be hilarious.
>>2863580Unfortunately Anon this is a metaphor that doesn't really work, because Hong Kong, in common with most large Asian cities, is full of independent restaurants, mostly family owned. They survive because of their local reputation. You will probably never visit any of them, because they don't pander to tourists. Yes there are also chain places. You should probably stick to them. Also, be honest, there was never a "mom n pop cafe that you visited since childhood" was there? You visited McD all your life, just like everyone else.
>>2863785>make a food metaphor>anon takes it literallywell this is new
>>2863441The Hong Kongers aren't the ones reaping the benefits. It's the Mandarin speaking mainlanders moving there and buying up all the good property.
>>2862493>>2862505>>2862654>>2862657>>2862909Why is this thread full of CCP shilling retards?I've got family from Hong Kong, some even still live there and they say the same shit. It's well known that the CCP has a policy of erasure when it comes to distinct local culture, if you spoke to them they'd literally admit this because it's all about making one homogenous China.
>>2863771>Just say filipinas and Indonesians. They are not east asian either. And there is literally nothing interesting about them, everyone avoids them on Sundays. What are you going to do, start hanging out with them? You faggots are funny. You fantasize about the old Kowloon walled city but you can't even handle talking to Filipinas. You wouldn't have lasted 5mn in Kowloon. You're afraid of any interaction.Just stay home and go watch Blade Runner, you braindead NPC fuck.
>>2864678Bro, I live in HK. I have no idea what your reply is rambling about. Dickheads like you can talk to all the flips you want to. That's the only "east asian" action you are going to get anyway. Go down to lockhart road with all the other pathetic white losers and chat up some filipina whores. Act like they like you for your "personality". Just don't mess with the maids on their day off. They want nothing to do with an awkward loser who is "not afraid to talk to filipinas".
>>2864627>The Hong Kongers aren't the ones reaping the benefits.Yeah, I'm sure they are somehow magically excluded from massively lowered rents as the satellite towns are now accessible, the streets no longer being full of trash or the local elite no longer being able to shit on the working plebs however they please.
>>2862487Ha, just got back as well. There's not really much of a bar scene for such a big city. The ones on Lockhart Road were sad as fuck, full of the typical fat anglos. Horse racing was kino, though.
At least Shenmue II still exists
>>2862887Per capita?Too many crappy mainland people. They don't know how to use an escalator or elevator.Filipinos and Indians?Unless you work with them, I would have to seek out an Indian at CKM.Filipinos are okay.>>2862487Two alright options:-Make your money and get out-Get out
>>2863434>>2863465>grime>HK was unique in that it had that lingering aura of British influence>grungy in a charming wayThis is the main appeal to me and reading this thread is making me sad. I've only been once, just for a couple of days for work in 2018 and was intending to visit again in about 2 months for fun. I'm a /p/hag and love taking photos of daily life and messy streets. Have they really cleaned up EVERY part of Hong Kong? I got the impression that the neighborhoods towards Shenzen, away from SSP and Mong Kok to the northwest, were more genuine. Messier, less English etc. I also wonder if it's visiting any places towards New Territories?I love tea restaurants and make a point to frequently visit and support the small handful we have in Auckland; I would sincerely hope that they're not dying out over there.
