Who else has been up in northern Maine before, and what did you think of it? I had left for another state a long time ago due to the lack of opportunity, but I find myself often missing it.

Curious to hear what other people have to say about this area of the state/country,

what's there to say? hardly anything goes on up there, the weather is pretty shit half the year, and unless you're in a very specific industry then there's hardly any work. pretty good people, but i just think there are other states that have similar areas to northern maine while still being an enjoyable place to live in, for the most part.

It's gorgeous country, but man, there is nothing going on.

I was more just looking for any personal anecdotes, but yeah I get that.

Literally. I do miss having Canada right next door, though

I didn't live in the North but I spent most of my 20s in Calais because I had a faggoty fuck civilization phase. I do not miss it. I thought I'd miss the outdoors but the only difference between living there and living in Shitnecktitty NY is that I have to drive farther to be innawoods. I miss the quiet but I don't miss everyone being elbow deep in my asshole about everything.

I found the people of Aroostook County much grumpier than on the coast, even in midsummer when it was warm and sunny. The Canadian side had modern expressways and new buildings, but everything on the American side was potholes and decrepitude. Felt strange. Went to a full service gas station where the attendant washed windows and checked fluid levels, rare in America. My visit was in July 2021. Personally I prefer Michigan to Maine, as the forest seems so much more accessible for dispersed camping in Michigan. Michiganders were a lot more blandly normal than Mainers, who have so many weird phenotypes and social behaviors. Autism perhaps? Love the old houses and quaint villages of Maine, however. Michigan has some cool villages too, but it's mostly Midwest sprawlslop.

Most of Maine is owned by a logging company that refuses to sell off any of it so most of it is barren with nothing to do and random sections completely cut down. On the bright side they let you use their logging roads if you pay at the inner checkpoints.
