Flying into Wichita to see family on spring break late this March. Visited when I was younger a few times but never really did anything. What is the proper midwest experience?

>>2863104Wow, rare Kansas thread.Anyway, why the fuck would you waste your precious days off in fucking Kansas? I've lived in southwest Kansas my entire life and there is jack shit to do here. The only reason I stay here is because I earn a pretty good salary and the cost of living/commuting time is really low. All my PTO is used to go somewhere far away.

>>2863104Go to Wichita and sing the entire Carry On My Wayward Song song and you will get women literally begging you for sex and a free subway sandwich.
>>2863104Only thing I'd really care to visit if I were in Kansas are the Eisenhower library and the Oz museum. There is some cool nature stuff, but most of it is far on the western side a long ways away from the major cities
http://www.gardenofedenlucas.org/The Garden of Eden in Lucas, Kansas is one of the oldest and weirdest folk art environments in the U.S. The builder created it in the last decades of his life and marred a woman in her 20s when he was in his 80s. He’s buried there in a pyramid and you can see his mummified body but a fee.,

>>2863104I live in wichita. There really isn't anything to do here unless you pay to hunt deer and ducks or fly small airplanes. There is pretty much zero public land. You could pay to ride horses or just go to a rodeo. You can kayak the river downtown with a rental kayak but the paddle kind of sucks. There are museums. You could go to boot barn or dandales and buy cowboy boots and a stetson. You could go to the clay shooting range east of town. They have a fun course where you shoot clays that fly out of different launchers and you rent an over and under to do it. That's fun and worth it. You can rent bikes downtown and peddle up and down the river. There is a diner called jimmies on harry and hillside that is good. Their local chain based on it called jimmies egg sucks don't go to that go to the original. The place sabor latin grill downtown is good they have all different latin american food. The shrimp ceviche with fried plantains is good there. Also the peruvian chicken is good. There is an ice cream place called papas on douglas that is good. And the mediterranean grill by town east mall is really good, the hummus and pita is good, good chicken, good curry. Go to scheels at the mall, it's an upscale sporting goods store that is only in the midwest and they sell guns and aren't homosexual like rei.
>>2863358>scheelsThey recently opened one here at the Chandler Mall in AZ where the Sears used to be. Giant ferris wheel, elk display, pretty much a Bass Pro Shop. It's always packed but I don't really understand the grandiose consumerist appeal. That being said, I do like to visit shopping malls whenever I go back east for the architecture. Suburbia developed so late here that, other than the mall in Tucson, most of them are pretty lame.
>>2863399Lmao I'm from Gilbert. My parents are from Kansas and I live here now for the col and wfh
>>2863497I miss elmers tacos on arizona ave so much. Used to eat the carne asada, mini red chili beef, breakfast, and bean and cheese wirth red sauce burros constantly. Was there for a wedding and the price of a carne asada has gone from $5.50 to $10
>>2863499Whenever I'm down in the valley there's this place on Cottonwood in CG I go out of my way to visit. Mr. Baja I think? In Flagstaff our mexican restaurants are eh, pretty expensive
>>2863546The last time I was in flag was for a Cherub concert. I regret going to asu and not nau. Just as long as you aren't on the dogfood factory side of town
>>2864954I don't think either of the three state schools are bad but they all have their tradeoffs. NAU is a nice campus, lot of respectable programs, and the scholarships were more generous than ASU and UoA. But the cost of living up here is no joke. Job market is very competitive. Finding a decent job and 1br in a nice location were pretty difficult my first year. A lot of people I know can't find one and just live off debt. Being surrounded by National Forest is a curse because the town has very little room left to grow. Very few jobs outside the university for graduates so the town is just an endless cycle of students and tourists. I couldn't imagine trying to build a professional career here. I disliked Phoenix and the desert after spending my life growing up there but I honestly miss it and will probably come back when I graduate.
>>2863358The state lakes in each county are okay. You can camp for free. They have an outhouse and picnic tables and fire rings. The Wichita suburbs are peak traffic-ridden sprawltopia, however. And there's some cheap motels near downtown that have a fair number of sketchy characters shambling about. I'd like to experience one of the mindblowing prairie thunderstorms sometime in my life. Preferably not while stuck in the middle of nowhere trying to hitch a ride across Kansas. IDK if anyone would pick up a hitchhiker in [current year]. People who drive nice new crossovers would never, ever consider giving a ride to a stranger waiting on the roadside, and increasingly, the entire Midwest is becoming a homogenous landscape of people driving crossovers with the windows rolled up no matter how nice the weather is.
