Flying to London with the wife for a week. What are the must do's as an American? May look into taking a train to Scotland, would be nice to see the countryside as well. We're both interested in the history and architecture. Personally I'd rather go to Italy but she's always wanted to see London and is into the whole empire history.I feel like museums and sightseeing cant really take up a whole 8 days though. So any tips for us?It's also our first overseas trip, but been to Mexico plenty of times
>>2863654Be sure to point and laugh at Lord Cornwallis's tomb in Westminster Abbey. When are you going?
>>2863655>Lord Cornwallis's tombThat shit's in fucking India not London
>>2863654>What are the must do's as an American?Put on a gas mask and prepare for a huge shock. The sight and stench will make you think you're in New Delhi.
>>2863654>May look into taking a train to Scotland, it takes about 4.5 hours on the train from london to edinburgh so schedule accordinglythere is a slow sleeper train which is an interesting experience by itself>would be nice to see the countryside as well. london is surrounded by countryside. the south downs, the north wessex downs, the chilterns are all easy trips away. depends how involved you want to get really. just get a train to a random small town, pick a direction and keep walking>We're both interested in the history and architecture. ok we've got lots of that. >Personally I'd rather go to Italy ok>but she's always wanted to see London and is into the whole empire history.unfortunately it is not popular to talk about the empire unless it is followed up by how bad it was. however the history is everywhere. for example you could visit the historic dockyards at portsmouth or chatham>I feel like museums and sightseeing cant really take up a whole 8 days though. british museum, science museum, victoria and albert museum v&a east, natural history museum, tate britain, tate modern, imperial war museum, national gallery, national portrait gallery. entry to the permanent collections is free in all of them. you could spend any amount of time at any of them and not see it all. depends how shallow or deep your interest is.>So any tips for us?wear sunscreen, pack an umbrella
>>2863654>I feel like museums and sightseeing cant really take up a whole 8 days thoughLondon is like Paris in that regard, you can absolutely spend 8 days in the museums.
>>2863654>What are the must do's as an American?don't go to london it is hell.
>>2863654>is into the whole empire history.that's everywhere in the uk though you know? beautiful churches, buildings and remnants of the empire are in all the major cities and built-up areas. go to chester. beautiful ancient city. (originally founded in the roman empire, loads of history, many many pubs and buildings there older than america)
>>2863878ah london is pretty relaxed compared to an american city
>>2863882you must never have been to london because if american cities were any less relaxed than london they'd be ...oh.
London is comfy. See the museums, grab a few pints in nice pubs, do some shopping at Harrod’s or on Bond Street.
if you are still new to travelling - seeing sights and museums is great. if you do it for 8 days straight it might get redundant but i think many national ones are free entry.if you enjoy the kitsch of tourism - london will be full of "tourist trap" silly things like the city tour bus (i like them to be honest), or things like sherlock Holmes museum which is it just a gift shop with an old study but its in sherlocks house so girls like that kinda stuff if you are nerds about any subjects there always someone important that has a landmark - many author houses are historical manors in the countryside, many famous filming locations. If you go to scotland - edinburgh a comfier train than glasgow from london imo, also edinburgh more bang for your buck castle, old town, new town, arthur seat, balmoral palace, little niche landmarks like blackfirars bobby or seeing some harry potter shit.getting trains in and out of london is very easy. its a maze but you have google - you can go to some small town that has an easy access outdoor trail, then come back a few hours laterbut within "london" how far you go out there are many green spaces the larger the more outward you go.all the classic tourist cities are cool, cambridge, oxford, bath, york. there are many 2nd choice ones that are also cool really liked durham for exmaple. everywhere in uk has little tourist area, adjacent posh area, and surrounding dumpy area. like dover is rundown town but has the castle, its a nice trip for just the castle btu the town is crap. cantebury isnt the worst but only a little pocket was interesting the rest was just average southern england small citylook up castles, palaces, great houses, manors, ruins, abbeys, any landmarks in region you'll go to.national trust, english heritage sites (cooler outside london)
>>2863887>do some shopping at Harrod’s or on Bond Street.>overpriced garbage>Too expensive.
>>2863654I'm a bong and indeed enjoy London but please, please, PLEASE, got to Italy instead. Its far better in every aspect. Also ignore >>2863879, UK has Japan-syndrome i.e. you have to go to sites at exactly the right time to get scenes that look anything like the pictures. Sure I like Chester and there are some towns with scenic blocks and buildings, but you don't really get appealing city centres the way you do on the continent - and certianly nothing on the scale you see in Italy.
>>2864262I’m sorry you’re poor. I’m sure there is a hostel thread you can post in.
