I'm doing my first ever multi-month back packing extravaganza.

Is a 40L osprey bag good? I'm just bringing like 4 t shirts, 3-4 shorts, 1 light weight long pants, laptop, phone charger, laptop charger, 3 small backup batteries, basic toiletries, underwear, socks, light rain jacket.
>>
>>2864562
40L is fucking tiny dude. And do you mean riding trains around and going to hotels and hostels or actually some trekking
>>
>>2864951
How many people trek with a laptop?
>>
>>2864562
>muh brandname
You can get a large backpack for less than $10 in Third World countries.
>>
>>2865046
Nobody wants a chinese piece of shit that falls apart in a couple days. Certain brands are proven durable and long lasting, and have ideal layouts.

Go ahead and reply with your cope now.
>>
This particular bag is a reddit favorite but it's actually fairly decent. It's within size regulations of most airlines for a carry on which is its main selling point while still having most the niceties expected of a proper trekking bag like a hip belt and a frame. Its only real weakness is the awful bottle pockets which are too small and poorly positioned (on the back and not the side of the bag so the weight is leveraged and feels worse than it should).
>>
>>2865049
Almost all bags are made in China including those from high end brands. And some Chinese brands are pretty high quality like Naturehike.
>>
I haven't gone anywhere without two 80L suitcases ever since I got into my 30s.

My tolerance for discomfort and inconvience keeps decreasing with age so by the time I'm 50 I'll probably be bringing 3 suitcases.
>>
>>2865049
You're the consoomerist coping with your acquisitive behavior. A marketer's perfect mark, you want to buy Brandname(TM) product simply because it's talked about a lot, and you hope this trend-following behavior will implicitly signal your normie status to chicks at hostels, thus increasing the likelihood of sexo.
>>
>>2864562
Yes its fine, its what I have. Get some packing cubes. Get a small stuff backpack for day trips and leave your big bag at the hostel.
>>
Saw a post by jeremymaluf who is a kind of minimalist faggot, and wonder what you guys think about it. To me these guys just seem to ignore reality and try to find a one size fits all tool which inevitably means that the tool is inadequate for some of the tasks but they like to completely disregard those issues.
>>
>muh 40L Osprey
It will work but something that's built to secure your laptop then everything else is best. Just get a backpack designed for a 17 inch laptop and roll.

Also why not just get a small rolling carry-on sized thing, it makes life infinitely easier. Multi month travel with only a backpack is doable sure, but only if you don't mind constantly packing shit in X way. One bag travel is only impressive or a cool idea to those who don't really travel.

>cubes
bro just use rubber bands saves so much more space and compresses at the same time
>>
>>2865043
Like most people? if nothing else most people bring a tablet+case/keyboard combo. If something goes wrong on your trip a laptop makes fixing things vastly easier to handle.
>>
>>2864562
I have no idea about name brand stuff. I just used a foldable duffel bag and a regular carry-on. Kept my main clothes in my duffel. Was very easy to move around with. Toiletry bag, laptop, chargers, socks, and other small things in my backpack. Didn't have to pay any of the extra fees for baggage, even when using Ryanair, but I know they've gotten more strict in the last few years about bag sizes. I lived out of this for like 5 months. It was fine just be sure to go to a laundromat whenever you get a chance. Would also recommend getting a new pair of quality walking shoes before you go.
>>
>>2864562
I am telling you. Get a suitcase with large size so you can pack like 50 of everything and not have a bunch of smelly shit on all the time. Plus if it has good wheels you can easily push it or haul it instead of doing long term damage to your kneck and back. I know people get all mad and butthurt about the clacking sound of wheels but they are just haters.
>>
>>2864562
That's fine IF you aren't bringing back much. The problem is you will probably want to since you said multi month.

>laptop, laptop charger
How big? 13" Macbook Air or an 18" gaming laptop?

I've got the fairpoint 40. Fucking love it. Travelled widely with it, and it holds a surprising amount.

I've even somehow used it as cabin baggage for about 20 or so flights in Europe.
>>
>>2866876
Lugging suitcases around can be fucking shit. When I land with a backpack, I'm in /trv/ mode from the get go. Suitcases put you at the mercy of hotel check in and out times.
>>
>>2866642
Cubes aren't just about saving space, though. It's simple shit like knowing exactly where stuff is without rummaging around and fucking up your pack. It's handy for segregating clothes which need washing, too.
>>
>>2865086
Not him but I will pay more if the materials are of higher quality, heritage design, it doesn't have shitty plastic zippers, it lists the fabric gsm, etc. Disposable goods are good sometimes and other times you want something for 20 years with repairability. That said most backpacking brand backpacks are just lightweight plastic. It's fairly difficulty to find good backpacks made of good materials outside of vintage. Everything has been enshitified.
>>
>>2866645
No, most people do not trek(actually trek) with a laptop. You have never left your smelly dirty apartment in your life. Stop posting.
>>
>>2867795
I used the same $180 sandpiper tacticoool backpack for 12 years, finally ditched it because im getting over the zogbot look, but it was fucking great. I beat it to shit so hard but zippers never broke.
By contrast, the "normie" backpack I bought at a mall in the Philippines for $60 already has a broken/ripped zipper 2 months into my current trip, and now I have to try and find a new bag or get it sewn up.
High quality bags are so important. Random chink mass market slop brands just cause problems. Their stitching is always sus even if it looks proper.
>>
>>2866876
Where does all your two weeks of dirty laundry go? Back in the suitcase to stink up your clean clothes?
>>2866961
It's easy to empty out a backpack and fill it with whatever you need for a trek.
>>2867800
My $7 pack is very durable and overbuilt. I've been liking it so far, but only time will tell whether the stitching is going to last half a decade. My last $20 Puma pack just about wore completely through from rubbing on my ass for 6 years, but it never fell apart. This pack is larger, easy to fit 2 liters of water and fruit and other sundries.

>>2867799
Lol, I've done half the legs of the Peaks of the Balkans with a laptop. It's nice to unwind with a movie at the end of the day.

Also, if you work freelance, total disconnect for extended periods isn't possible. Some little jobs need constant attention, and phones just don't cut it.
>>
>>2864562
I must not understand the appeal of backpacking because bringing a regular 40L carry-on and a 18-22L backpack for daily excursions seems like a far superior approach
>>
>>2868628
Trundling a suitcase doesn't make sense when you're traveling in the Third World with its awful pavements. Suitcase fags are always the ones bitching about getting fucked around with by Third World taxis/rideshares, because they literally can't walk or ride a motorbike even a single kilometer with their stupid cardboard box of clothes. Neither can they ride a local bus, because their suitcase takes up so much space and blocks the aisle. Only morbid obesity will limit your travel mobility more than a suitcase does.
>>
>>2866960
this is good information, as someone gearing up for a backpack trip around Europe (and later Asia too) I am curious eurobros, what airlines are super annoying about your backpacks? Ryanair looks like dirt cheap flights, would they fuck with me for having a farpoint 40?
In the US, I took a massive bag on Allegiant and they never messed with me, but Frontier fucks with people all the time from what I've seen.

Staff at the gate do check on Ryanair, Wizzair and Easyjet.

Afaik they get commission per bag 'caught', like 1 or 2gbp a time. However, the word on the street is that they fucking HATE the stress which comes with it.

Someone I know who does this job has told me they mainly look for hard suitcases, as they can't actually fit under a seat if they're not the right size.

I've been asked 2 or 3 times to have my bag checked. Each time I:
>took my laptop out
>slightly bent the back strap diagonally in the container
>put it in
by the time i've said "look it fits" (it doesn't technically) the gate guy has already been dealing with other shit.

I'd say you've got a 5% chance of 'getting caught' if you've got a proper Nazi on the gate who's checking every dimension properly (difficult if you've got the volume of EU budget airlines in cramped gate areas and quick turnaround times). When you price that in, you come out ahead.

Also, of course, if you overpack and the bag looks bulky, you runa further risk.

Another thing is the leg room on the flight. A proper cabin bag on an EU budget flight always comes with 'priority boarding' now, which means those who have bought bags fill up the overhead bins ASAP, and without priority you're practically guarenteed to have the bag under the chair in front.

It fits (put bag in front of you, then kick the bottom of it to slide it under), but if you have big legs, it's not going to be a comfortable journey.

The backpack really is on the edge of minmaxing 1bag.

I've flown in China a fair bit, and never had problems with the aforementioned backpack and a hardback suitcase in the cabin.

I've never even been checked.

However, I've never flown ultra budget shit. I've heard that they actually weigh bags at the gate.

I've flown with China Eastern/Southern, Airchina, Hainan Air, and HK Airlines.

I've heard there's airlines like HK Express which can jew you in any way posssible.

Btw, trip.com is your friend traveling/flying in China.

Can't speak for rest of Asia.

I traveled using a 45L bag and it was good enough. I carried about a week and a half worth of clothes, climate was temperate, so I had 2 pairs of long pants, no shorts, shirts(some nicer button ups too), raincoat, and a light jacket. Just one pair of boots that I wore daily that I nikwax'd and a pair of flip flops for hostel showers. I used compressing packing cubes here and it really helped.
For tech: thinkpad, power bank, gopro and spare batteries, and then my laptop can charge via USB-C so I got a single GAN charger for my laptop, gopro, and phone. Little heavy but it fit in every coin locker I found and in all the overheads on any train or plane.

I see, that makes sense and kind of what I expected with the human aspect of it. The majority of people don't want to fuck someone over/really piss someone off for an extra euro or two. But there's always that chance you get that one person who is just a cunt Lol. I think I'll be good though. thanks for the info
>>2869513
I'll keep an eye out for Express. I think I did hear that about trip.com for them, I know they have a few apps that are basically a necessity now there. But this is more later in the year so I do have some time to figure that out.

but thanks again you two for the information

I paid $13 USD total for my two bags. Okay, $25 because there is an old $12 collapsible duffel in the bottom of my new duffel, in case I want a third bag for whatever reason. But yeah, go ahead and be female coded, spend $100+ for a heckin stylish brandname bag that hugs your body with its feminine curves.

I make $500 a day. I can afford a high quality piece of equipment. You may now cope.
