I am not very bright and this is the thing I have the most difficulty with when trip planning. There are a lot of places out there and I am sure there is a lot of cool things to do/see... but how do you go about finding out what there is? I've gone to an area on google maps and gone to a city's main webpage but neither of those have given me anything that useful to go off of. You all seem really knowledgeable about how to find stuff to do so i ask: how did you attain those skills to learn what all is going on out there?

I start by searching places that seem kind of interesting. Then I pan around google maps and click on random places, saving anything that seems like it might be worth visiting. I also google stuff in google images. All the top results are very basic and touristy, but when you click on an image, you get some related images. Sometimes those are more interesting. Then I keep clicking on related images and find increasingly cool stuff. Those places sometimes end up being in different cities entirely, so then I repeat the process with that new city.

I also look up wikipedia articles about places. Usually there's a few pictures of some minor historical place or some neighboring place. It's also good to look at articles about that country's actual history, because that's bound to have photos of historical locations or some natural landscapes.

For example, the wikipedia article for North India has some cool pictures right at the top, with locations mentioned. Click and follow the links for each of those and you'll find some cool stuff. Click on links inside those articles to things that seem interesting and you'll find even more interesting things. Then it's a matter of determining what places are the most interesting to you.

getyourguide.com

I literally just look at the fucking map (either satellite or terrain view). If you can't read a map, that's a skill issue that will permanently hamper your ability to find cool places that nobody else is talking about.

What are you a fucking gargoyle?
>Mmmmmm these rooftops are exactly where I want to be

Any suggestions for better maps? Google maps used to be a lot better at highlighting things but in recent years it seems to surface jack all. I'm sure there was some new monitization model that forced that because no matter how much I zoom around it doesn't show as much as it once did.

Are you using keywords or just zooming in? I search for scenic overlooks, museums, and art galleries.

Just zooming around. I never thought about looking things to do like that.

you have to look for things on google maps, then go to their website to see if they are real/accessible - people put stuff on google maps that is closed or private property or just randomly closed for repairs, make sure to call ahead or email if you really want to be sure something will be open

also, not sure if you like to hike, but alltrails has a good search feature and you can filter by difficulty and mileage (but they do make you login to use it)

I find google maps is weird about zooming in, sometimes things will pop up but only if you zoom in super close like they are sorta hiding it.

Where are you looking to travel to?

oh little bonus, you can search things like "museums open wednesday" and it can often handle more advanced queries

I made this thread mainly for generic advice; I stopped traveling mainly due to poor planning on my side. I want to go somewhere for baseball opening in a month. Leaning towards NYC to watch da mets but I might also meet a friend of mine in Cleveland if he's free that weekend.

this, plus search the city on youtube, 4plebs and reddit and the google maps "Attractions" category is sometimes helpful

On monday I will go to [insert area], so while I'm there I will [open google maps and find interesting things to see and do in that area]

Repeat for every day of the week

Everything starts with Instagram. If I can get a good pic for Instagram/dating apps, I am going there. There is no other point to traveling.
