Be USA:- 10x as much land- ability to mass-produce buildings with advanced technology- tons of vacancies, hotels rarely sold out- not even downtown, have to drive everywhere- surrounded by homeless, druggies and hookers- still be $250 bare minimum in big citiesHow does Europe pull it off?

Most accomodations in America are super sized because fat burgers hate small spaces and having to park more than ten yards from their room, so base prices are higher and that skews the average upwards. I understand why the idea of staying in $90 motels on a roadtrip across America sounds really bleak and unenjoyable. The rooms stink so bad, the clientele are ugly & low class, and the surroundings are desolate empty space (unless you're in a culturally enriched ghetto area full of street life). You have to get used to the idea of driving across many miles of generic commercial/residential emptiness to visit the little oases of soulfulness and sociability that are found all across America. In European cities of course you are glutted with such spots, all of them a few minutes' stroll away. So America feels barbarian.
