Food is also nice here, fatty and full of carbohydrates.For large cities, I would highly recommend Grodno and Minsk.
I'm an american that's been planning on traveling to minsk hopefully within the next few months. Is it still safe now, especially with the likely impending 3rd world war likely on our hands? Will the people be hostile?

No one here in Belarus (except maybe drunk people and total idiots, both of which are rare) would dare to mistreat you just because you are an American. On the contrary, people are commonly pleased to learn about Americans casually visiting Belarus.You will notice that younger people won't miss a chance to practice their English with a native speaker.
