I currently have a trip planned to Egypt and Jordan later this month. I'm scheduled to arrive in Cairo on March 22, and then in Ammon on the 29th. Should I cancel the Jordan portion of the trip? I still want to go, and I'll lose money if I don't, but I don't want to deal with a series of cancelled flights and potentially having to spend most of the time sheltering in place at my hotel while Israel and Iran fire missiles at each other.

Jordan is a shithole right now. The economy has collapsed as tourists flee (I was just there after that october attack thing). Everyone's on edge and they have supply chain issues with basic resources. Petra and all that are ghost towns. Hotels are cheaper which was great but every fucking person you talk to will try to scam you. Literally everyone. Hilton 5-star dead sea resort tried to squeeze me for money on a taxi...I wouldn't go now.

Interesting note to OP: Now that I've come back from Egypt, I can safely say the scammers there were nowhere near as aggressive as those in Petra, that's definitely been the worst in terms of people being actively confrontational and trying to corner you. In Egypt you say no walk away and people stop bothering you. Jordan otherwise people were lovely but Petra is such a big site with no real monitoring that the Bedouin there take the piss. That's not to say that you shouldn't go, its amazing just how big the site is and once you get past the entrance area it mellows down a bit, but yeah its attracts the scummiest of the scums.

Was your plan to have an additional week in Jordan, then? I guess recent events may render that difficult. I will say Amman is the best example of a 'concrete jungle' I've seen, its massive sprawled out over hills and you'll rapidly learn the traffic is a far bigger threat than anything else. There's also not tonnes to see, the Citadel and ancient museum is interesting but don't expect to be blown away. I did think the views were really cool though in the sense of well... it IS a concrete jungle.

I would reschedule your plans, for sure. I heard the flights home are $7-10/seat. If that is not in your own budget, just stay away from the whole zone for the next 2-3mo. Egypt is the overrlad evacuation (bus) to relieve people in Isreal and Jordan both, where flights out are still operating. This is not the time to be part of any problem.

>Jordan is a shithole right now.
And Egypt is a shithole all the time.

Matches my experience well. Petra is such a goddamn vile shithole. The site itself is wonderful but the locals belong in the gas chambers. Not a single honest soul lives in the godforsaken dump that is Wadi Musa, and yet they still all pale in comparison to the fucking bedu.
